Stress management in men with solvent-induced chronic toxic encephalopathy.

Stress management was studied in male patients with solvent-induced chronic toxic encephalopathy (TE) of types 2A (TE 2A, n = 31) and 2B (TE 2B, n = 26). The patients were compared with a healthy reference group (n = 57). Self-reported symptoms (90-item Symptoms Checklist [SCL-90]), sense of coherence, coping strategies, and level of mastery were measured. As expected, both TE groups reported highly deviating symptoms on most SCL-90 scales. The TE 2B patients, who had objectified cognitive dysfunction, reported more use of passive, less situationally adequate coping strategies; a weaker sense

Psychological Mechanisms of Caregiver Involvement in Caregiving for Individuals with Alzheimer's Disease: Analysis of the Moderated Mediation Model.

Providing long-term care for a person with Alzheimer's disease is associated with chronic stress and emotional overload. One of the key predictors of emotional burden is the amount of time devoted to caregiving, which intensifies the experienced stress. Additional risk factors include the stage of the illness, difficulties in the care recipient's activities of daily living, the caregiver's neglect of their own needs, and challenging behaviours exhibited by the person receiving care. Therefore, it is essential to identify the psychological protective resources of caregivers that can buffer the

Measuring the Intensity of Stress Experienced and Its Impact on Life in Patients with Diagnosed Alcohol Use Disorder.

Alcohol addiction is characterized by extensive alcohol consumption that dominates other behaviours previously important to a patient. According to data from The State Agency for Prevention of Alcohol-Related Problems, up to 900,000 people in Poland are addicted to alcohol. On average, approximately 9.7 L of pure alcohol per capita was consumed in 2021. Alcohol addiction may cause severe health problems and is one the key risk factors for various diseases. Stress plays an important role in the process of alcohol addiction and is also a predictor for lower enjoyment in life. On the other hand,

How daughters of women with breast cancer cope with the threat of the illness.

Coping strategies and attitudes toward medical treatment of 45 daughters of women who had had breast cancer were compared with strategies (sense of coherence) and attitudes on a health opinion survey of 51 women with no such family history who were referred to a breast health clinic in northern Israel. The daughters of women with breast cancer ranked lower on sense of coherence than the women with no such history. They also were more actively involved in the medical setting and requested more medical information than women whose mothers did not have breast cancer. The age of the daughter at th

Overall and domain-specific life satisfaction when living with familial Alzheimer's disease risk: A quantitative approach.

In this study, we explored life satisfaction and sense of coherence in relation to biopsychosocial variables in individuals at risk for the development of familial Alzheimer's disease. Forty nine individuals (response rate: 96%) were interviewed. Life satisfaction was found to be high for the majority of participants. Those who were older than the expected age of onset of disease, those <6 years' inclusion in the Familial Alzheimer's disease biomarker study, and males tended to experience positive psychological health. Sense of coherence was positively associated with satisfaction with life as

Gender differences in health perceptions and their predictors.

This study explored the degree to which risks embedded in the social construction of gender roles and personality traits explained gender differences in health perceptions and reporting among mild hypertensive patients (134 women and 104 men) under the same treatment regime. Compared with men, women were less educated, less likely to be employed, less happy, more distressed, less satisfied with family functioning, and had a weaker sense of coherence. Twice as many women as men evaluated their health as 'poor', and on average reported 2.6 more symptoms than men. These gender differences largely

METHODS: We surveyed a total of 163 dentistry students during the first 2.5 years, up to the first state examination. To ensure comparability, the data were collected from all students at the beginning of each semester. Standardized, validated questionnaires on burnout sympto

Living alone, receiving help, helplessness, and inactivity are strongly related to risk of undernutrition among older home-dwelling people.

BACKGROUND: Being at risk of undernutrition is a global problem among older people. Undernutrition can be considered inadequate nutritional status, characterized by insufficient food intake and weight loss. There is a lack of Norwegian studies focusing on being at risk of undernutrition and self-care ability, sense of coherence, and health-related issues among older home-dwelling people. AIM: To describe the prevalence of being at risk of undernutrition among a group of older home-dwelling individuals in Norway, and to relate the results to reported self-care ability, sense of coherence, perc
