A comparative microbiological study of clinically healthy eyes and those affected by ophthalmia in cattle and the association of noctuid eye-frequenting moths.

The eyes of clinically healthy Simmentaler cattle and those affected by ophthalmia were sampled once a month over a continuous period of 12 months for bacterial, mycoplasmal and ureaplasmal infections. In total 478 eyes, representing from a clinical viewpoint 414 healthy and 64 affected eyes, were swabbed. Bacteria were isolated from 201 (48.6%) healthy eyes and 56 (87.5%) affected eyes. No bacteria were isolated from the remaining eyes. Eleven genera of bacteria were isolated from healthy eyes and 8 genera from affected eyes. The majority of isolates were classified in the genera Moraxella, N

PEZO-1 and TRP-4 mechanosensors are involved in mating behavior in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Male mating in Caenorhabditis elegans is a complex behavior with a strong mechanosensory component. C. elegans has several characterized mechanotransducer proteins, but few have been shown to contribute to mating. Here, we investigated the roles of PEZO-1, a piezo channel, and TRP-4, a mechanotransducing TRPN channel, in male mating behavior. We show that pezo-1 is expressed in several male-specific neurons with known roles in mating. We show that, among other neurons, trp-4 is expressed in the Post-Cloacal sensilla neuron type A (PCA) sensory neuron, which monitors relative sliding between th

C. elegans PVF-1 inhibits permissive UNC-40 signalling through CED-10 GTPase to position the male ray 1 sensillum.

Graded distributions of netrin and semaphorin guidance cues convey instructive polarity information to migrating cells and growth cones, but also have permissive (i.e. non-polarity determining) functions in mammalian development and repair. The permissive functions of these cues are largely uncharacterised at a molecular level. We found previously that UNC-6 (netrin) signals permissively through UNC-40 (DCC) and UNC-5 receptors to prevent anterior displacement of the ray 1 sensillum in the C. elegans male tail. UNC-6/UNC-40 signalling functions in parallel with SMP-1 (semaporin 1)/PLX-1 (plexi

Molecular characterization and expression of sensory neuron membrane proteins in the parasitoid Microplitis mediator (Hymenoptera: Braconidae).

Sensory neuron membrane proteins (SNMPs), homologs of the human fatty acid transport protein CD36 family, are observed to play a significant role in chemoreception, especially in detecting sex pheromone in Drosophila and some lepidopteran species. In the current study, two full-length SNMP transcripts, MmedSNMP1 and MmedSNMP2, were identified in the parasitoid Microplitis mediator (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis showed that the expression of MmedSNMP1 was significantly higher in antennae than in other tissues of both sexes. In addition, the

Phylogeny of scolopendromorph centipedes (Chilopoda): morphological analysis featuring characters from the peristomatic area.

Alternative schemes for the higher-level systematics of the centipede order Scolopendromorpha have been established from characters of trunk segmentation, including the segmental position of spiracles, and the presence or absence of eyes. A comparative survey of the preoral chamber by light and scanning electron microscopy contributes 16 new characters of the epipharynx and hypopharynx, sampled from 26 species that represent 20 genera. These new data together with 49 additional morphological characters permit cladistic analysis of the major scolopendromorph groups. The shortest cladograms reso

Parasitogenic alterations of vector behaviour.

In many parasite-vector systems, alterations of the behaviour of the blood-sucking arthropods result in an increase of the transmission rate, but the underlying mechanisms are elucidated in only some systems. The more sluggish movements of the Trypanosoma rangeli-infected triatomine Rhodnius prolixus might increase the rate of predation by insectivorous mammals but also the transmission rate between the triatomines via cannibalism. Alterations of the feeding behaviour by which the number of attacks on hosts by blood-sucking arthropods can be increased seem to derive from two possible mechanism

Identification and partial characterization of putative taurine receptor proteins from the olfactory organ of the spiny lobster.

To explore the initial stages of olfactory transduction, we have used biochemical techniques to characterize proteins associated with the dendritic plasma membrane from the olfactory receptor neurons of the spiny lobster Panulirus argus. In particular, we have studied proteins that interact with taurine, an amino acid that is an important odorant for this species. The cross-linker bis(sulfosuccinimidyl)suberate (BS3) was used to covalently link [3H]-taurine to cell surface proteins on membrane from the aesthetasc (olfactory) sensilla of the lateral filament of the antennule. A radioligand-rece

Regulation of Drosophila neural development by a putative secreted protein.

The Drosophila strawberry (sty) locus was isolated by P-element insertion mutagenesis in a screen for mutations affecting eye development. Analysis of the mutant phenotype and the putative expression pattern of the sty gene suggested that it has multiple functions. Mutations in the sty gene lead to irregular spacing of ommatidia, an increase in the number of photoreceptor cells, as well as abnormal axonal projections to the lamina and disrupted structure of the optic lobes in the adult fly. The sty mutation also causes abnormal head involution, a change in a number of sensilla in the antennoma

An examination of nervous system revealed unexpected immunoreactivity of both secretory apparatus and excretory canals in plerocercoids of two broad tapeworms (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidea).

Dibothriocephalus ditremus and Dibothriocephalus latus are diphyllobothriidean tapeworms autochthonous to Europe. Their larval stages (plerocercoids) may seriously alter health of their intermediate fish hosts (D. ditremus) or cause intestinal diphyllobothriosis of the final human host (D. latus). Despite numerous data on the internal structure of broad tapeworms, many aspects of the morphology and physiology related to host–parasite co-existence remain unclear for these 2 species. The main objective of this work was to elucidate functional morphology of the frontal part (scolex) of plerocerco

Hypopharynx in termites: Morphological and functional aspects.

The hypopharynx morphology in workers, pseudergates, and soldiers was described in six families of Isoptera using scanning electronic microscopy. This is the first comparative study to detail the hypopharynx among different species of termites, and included 4 one-piece type (OP) and 9 multiple-pieces type termites (MP). The results showed different arrangements of the hypopharynx trichomes, with fewer of these structures in the frontal region of the hypopharynx in pseudergates and soldiers of OP termites. These characteristics did not apply to Serritermes serrifer, since its pseudergates displ

An odorant receptor from the southern house mosquito Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus sensitive to oviposition attractants.

BACKGROUND: Insect odorant receptors (ORs) are heteromers comprised of highly variable odorant-binding subunits associated with one conserved co-receptor. They are potential molecular targets for the development of novel mosquito attractants and repellents. ORs have been identified in the malaria mosquito, Anopheles gambiae, and in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. However, they are still unknown in the Southern house mosquito, Culex quinquefasciatus, which transmits pathogens that cause human diseases throughout the world, including West Nile Virus in the United States. Dendritic integration in olfactory sensory neurons: a steady-state analysis of how the neuron structure and neuron environment influence the coding of odor intensity.

Response properties of the receptor potential at steady state were analyzed in a biophysical model of an olfactory sensory neuron embedded in a multicell environment. The neuron structure was described as a set of several identical dendrites (or cilia) bearing the transduction mechanisms, joined to a nonsensory part--dendritic knob, soma, and axon. The different ionic compositions of the media surrounding the neuron sensory and nonsensory parts and the extraneuronal voltage sources, which both result from the presence of auxiliary cells, were also taken into account. Analytical solutions were

Chorioptes mites: re-evaluation of species integrity.

Chorioptes mites (Acari: Psoroptidae) are non-burrowing agents of mange which parasitize a wide range of domesticated and wild ungulates. Considerable historical confusion has surrounded the description and naming of the various species of Chorioptes. Here, the opisthosomal setae of male adult Chorioptes mites from a range of host species and geographic locations were subjected to detailed analysis. Discriminant analysis suggests the existence of three clear morphotypes. The first, Chorioptes bovis, is characterized by a very long seta 1 (ae) and short spatulate setae 2 (l4 and d5), whereas, i

Identification of β-ionone as an oviposition preference cue in Spodoptera litura using SlitPBP3-based reverse chemical ecology.

BACKGROUND: Screening and identifying compounds that modulate oviposition by female Spodoptera litura moths is a promising strategy for the selective management of this pest. Reverse chemical ecology provides an efficient and target-oriented approach for identifying bioactive semiochemicals by exploiting the functionally relevant olfactory binding proteins. RESULTS: Scanning electron microscopy revealed the presence of multiple types of sensilla on the ovipositor of female S. litura, providing morphological support for the selection of ovipositor-expressed olfactory genes as screening targets

Nematode Tango Milonguero - the C. elegans male's search for the hermaphrodite vulva.

The vulva search corresponds to the first step of mating in Caenorhabditis elegans wherein the male recognizes a potential mate through contact and commences a systematic, contact-based search of her surface for the vulva. During this 'dance' the male presses his tail genitalia firmly against the hermaphrodite surface and moves backward, modulating tail posture to effect changes in search trajectory. Upon sensing the vulva, the male pauses and the insemination phase of mating begins. External tail sensilla, the rays, induce and guide the male's search by registering hermaphrodite surface cues.

Ultrastructural Architecture and Morphological Examination of Hirudo verbana (Annelida, Hirudinea).

In this study, the morphological characteristics of the medicinal leech Hirudo verbana (Annelida, Hirudinea) were examined. Mitochondrial CO1 gene sequences of representative specimens were recorded in GenBank, and macroscopic, histological, and SEM analyses of remaining representatives were made. The species had trignathous jaws, each half-moon in shape. There were 75-80 denticles on the left jaw with their tips medially, while the right jaw had 30-34 equilateral triangular denticles, all arranged in a single row. The anterior jaw had 35-40 blunt-tipped denticles similarly arranged in a singl

The robustness of Caenorhabditis elegans male mating behavior depends on the distributed properties of ray sensory neurons and their output through core and male-specific targets.

Many evolutionarily significant behaviors, such as mating, involve dynamic interactions with animate targets. This raises the question of what features of neural circuit design are essential to support these complex types of behavior. The Caenorhabditis elegans male uses 18 ray sensilla of the tail to coordinate mate apposition behavior, which facilitates a systematic search of the hermaphrodite surface for the vulva. Precisely how ray neuron types, A and B, robustly endow the male with a high degree of spatial and temporal precision is unknown. We show that the appositional postures that driv

Bimodality of auditory receptors in bush-crickets. Сontinued discussion. It's time to experiment.

Continuation of the discussion on the sensitivity of the chordotonal sensilla of the tympanal organ of bush-crickets to vibratory stimuli. We have previously shown that individual receptors registered directly in the tympanal organ perceive vibrations along with sound stimuli. In addition, scolopidia of the crista acustica possess mixed sensitivity, too, as well as receptors of the intermediate organ. The authors of the comment offered their opinion concerning our applied methods as well as our obtained results. In particular, they noted the dissimilarity of our data from the previously obtain

Using essential oils from Citrus paradisi as a fumigant for Solenopsis invicta workers and evaluating the oils' effect on worker behavior.

The red imported fire ant is one of the world's most devastating invasive species, adversely affecting humans, wildlife, crops, and livestock. To control infestations, chemical pesticides are deployed extensively around the world. However, their extensive use has led to negative effects on the environment and human health. Essential oils, which are safe and ecofriendly, can potentially be used as alternatives to chemical pesticides. In this study, grapefruit essential oils were used as fumigant agents to control red imported fire ants. The crude grapefruit oil (GO1) contained 28 compounds, and
