Corneal denervation is one of the most serious insults that can occur to an eye; disease symptoms can be suppressed, and epithelial breakdown is likely to occur. In the cases presented, failure to test corneal sensation delayed diagnosis and endangered the cornea. Conditions affecting the trigeminal sensory pathway, including those causing a pain-anesthesia paradox, are described. Corneal sensation must be tested in all instances of suspicious head pain or paresthesia, head trauma, cranial nerve defect, cranial autonomic dysfunction, or unexplained corneal epithelial defect. The trigeminal ner

This article reviews the utility of neurophysiological recordings and quantitative sensory testing (QST) in providing sensitive, quantitative, and objective tests for the diagnosis and localization of damage to the trigeminal nerve. Electromyography and recordings of the masseter reflex and compound muscle action potential evoked by transcranial magnetic stimulation or direct electrical stimulation of the masseteric nerve can be of value in evaluating the function of a motor neurons supplying the muscles of mastication. Orthodromic recording of the sensory action potential and trigeminal somat

UNLABELLED: Sensory attenuation, the top-down filtering or gating of afferent information, has been extensively studied in two fields: physiological and perceptual. Physiological sensory attenuation is represented as a decrease in the amplitude of the primary and secondary components of the somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) before and during movement. Perceptual sensory attenuation, described using the analogy of a persons' inability to tickle oneself, is a reduction in the perception of the afferent input of a self-produced tactile sensation due to the central cancellation of the reafferen

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Bladder pain syndrome (BPS) is a debilitating condition characterised by exaggerated bladder sensations and altered bladder function. It is still unknown whether the condition is a peripheral sensory problem or due to abnormal central sensory processing as seen in central sensitisation. This systematic review, which followed a published and Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews-registered protocol (CRD42021229962), is aimed at establishing the scope of central sensitisation in patients with BPS to aid optimal management and treatment.
METHODS: Four databases

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV), a member of the human herpesvirus family, causes childhood chickenpox (varicella), becomes latent in sensory ganglia, and reactivates years later in immunocompromised and elderly persons to produce shingles (herpes zoster). Early in the AIDS epidemic, zoster was noted in adults and children infected with HIV. Severe and debilitating zoster-associated dermatological, ophthalmic, and neurological complications may occur in patients infected with HIV. Antiviral therapy can modify the duration of zoster and alleviate its attendant complications. Varicella vaccine may

Two hearing-impaired children were tested and trained in the utilization of an artificial acoustic cue that signalled the presence of /s/ and /z/ in verbal stimuli. These sounds, chosen because they are among the most important morphemes in English, were both perceived and produced significantly better by the subjects following only seven training sessions when the cue, automatically signalled by a specially designed laboratory device, was presented at a 20 dB sensation level in a frequency range immediately above the subjects' upper limits of hearing for amplified speech. The implications of

Background/Objectives: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a nociplastic pain disorder marked by altered central nervous system processing and abnormal sensory modulation. Diagnosis remains largely symptom-based and lacks objective biomarkers. Sensory modulation disorder (SMD)-impaired regulation of responses to non-noxious input-may represent a clinically relevant diagnostic dimension. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence/diagnostic value of SMD in FM, examine links with symptom severity and stress, and assess its potential for patient stratification. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 182 adult

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Easily measurable anthropometric parameters may aid in predicting the level of spinal anaesthesia. Some studies have demonstrated a significant correlation between hip-shoulder width ratio (HSR) and level of spinal anaesthesia in lateral position. We hypothesised that even sitting position for subarachnoid injection will result in positive correlation between HSR and sensory level of spinal anaesthesia. So, we aimed to study correlation between HSR and sensory level of subarachnoid block in sitting position after administering 3 ml of 0.5% hyperbaric levobupivacaine.

Canine degenerative myelopathy (DM) is a progressive, adult-onset, multisystem degenerative disease with many features in common with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). As with some forms of ALS, DM is associated with mutations in superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1). Clinical signs include general proprioceptive ataxia and spastic upper motor neuron paresis in pelvic limbs, which progress to flaccid tetraplegia and dysphagia. The purpose of this study was to characterize DM as a potential disease model for ALS. We previously reported that intercostal muscle atrophy develops in dogs with advanced-s

Human vestibular sensory epithelia of macula utriculi were examined in 3 cases with acoustic neurinoma by intermediate voltage electron microscope. The innervation pattern of vestibular hair cells was studied by means of computer aided three-dimensional reconstruction technique. The sensory epithelia were fairly well preserved. Most of type I and all of type II hair cells appeared normal. However, some type I hair cells were incompletely surrounded by nerve calyces and received direct contact from the efferent nerve endings. These type I hair cells were also innervated by a few neighboring aff

Individual differences in speech perception often arise from disparities in access to acoustic-phonetic cues, particularly among those with hearing loss. Haptic hearing aids, which convey speech information through the sense of touch, offer a complementary pathway to improve speech understanding. However, effectively transmitting critical speech features through vibrotactile stimulation remains challenging. To address this challenge, we introduce a tactile spectral peak picking (tSPP) approach, integrated into a vocoder-based audio-to-tactile conversion algorithm to enhance vibrotactile phoneme

Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) is effective in suppressing systemic human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) viral load and has decreased mortality rates and the incidence of systemic opportunistic infections in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Multiple studies now suggest that the incidence rates of HIV-associated neurological disease and central nervous system (CNS) opportunistic infections also are decreasing. Since the introduction of HAART in 1996, the incidence of HIV dementia has decreased by approximately 50%. The mean CD4 cell count for new cases of HIV

In this experimental study we coupled nerve growth factor (NGF) with notatin by dicyclohexylcarbodiimide to label NGF and observed the effects of NGF on axonal retrograde transport after axonal injury of motoneurons with the aid of notatin chemiluminescence system. The results showed that NGF could be transported through axon not only to sensory neurons in dorsal root ganglia but also to motoneurons in spinal cord ventral horn.

Patients with multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN) have slowly progressive, predominantly distal asymmetric limb weakness without sensory loss. While previous studies have investigated the impact of MMN on body functions and structures, relatively little is known about the impact of patients' weakness on daily functioning. The aim of the present cross-sectional study, involving 47 patients with MMN, was to evaluate determinants of patients' functioning. Most patients showed not only muscle weakness but also fatigue, limited dexterity, and limited walking ability. Regression models showed that age

BACKGROUND: Stargardt disease is the most common cause of juvenile macular degeneration leading to early central visual loss. Dispensing of correct low-vision devices based on the residual visual function and specific visual requirements of a patient can result in a positive outcome. It is important to know the factors involved in the selection of these devices. This study was undertaken to assess these factors.
METHODS: Patients with Stargardt disease referred to a low-vision clinic underwent evaluation of visual status, disease stage, visual requirements and lifestyle. They were evaluated f

The human postural coordination mechanism is an example of a complex closed-loop control system based on multisensory integration [9,10,13,14]. In models of this process, sensory data from vestibular, visual, tactile and proprioceptive systems are integrated as linearly additive inputs that drive multiple sensory-motor loops to provide effective coordination of body movement, posture and alignment [5-8, 10, 11]. In the absence of normal vestibular (such as from a toxic drug reaction) and other inputs, unstable posture occurs. This instability may be the result of noise in a functionally open-l

An acoustic orientation system was devised to promote independent indoor travel in blind persons with mental retardation. The system was assessed with four blind adolescents, all affected by severe mental retardation. Data showed that the system was very useful in helping those adolescents orient and move independently in their daily environment and in a new (generalization) setting. The findings are discussed in relation to the characteristics of the system.
