Symptomatic subependymoma--a case report.

Subependymoma is a rare, slow-growing, benign noninvasive tumor of the central nervous system that may be located in the fourth ventricle, the septum pellucidum, the third and the lateral ventricles, the aqueduct, and the proximal spinal cord. Symptoms, if any, usually result either from direct compression of the brain stem or from acute hydrocephalus due to occlusion of the foramen of Monro or aqueduct of Sylvius. In this report, we describe a case of subependymoma of the lateral ventricle with headache in a young female patient. This is the first reported case subependymoma in Korea that was

Immunohistochemical evidence for degeneration of cholinergic neurons in the forebrain of the rat following injection of AF64A-picrylsulfonate into the dorsal hippocampus.

The cholinergic neurotoxin, AF64A-picrylsulfonate, was unilaterally infused into the dorsal hippocampus of Wistar rats (2 nmol/2 microliters/4 min; A 6.2, Ls 1.5, H 6.5, Paxinos and Watson). After 19 days the for immunohistochemical staining of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT). Morphometry and counting of ChAT-immunoreactive profiles revealed shrinkage and disappearance of cholinergic neurons in the medial septum and diagonal band of Broca at the lesioned brain side. These data indicate a retrograde degeneration of cholinergic neurons following injection of AF64A-picrylsulfonate into the dorsa

Holoprosencephaly in a bovine calf.

Holoprosencephaly, a rare brain malformation previously unreported in the bovine species, was observed in a female Hereford calf. The malformation was characterized by lack of the longitudinal cerebral fissure and the falx cerebri with fusion of the cerebral hemispheres and a single hydrocephalically dilated lateral ventricle, absence of olfactory bulbs and nerves, corpus callosum and septum pellucidum, and heterotopia. The face was flat. There were mild ocular hypotelorism and severe microphthalmia. The morphological features of this bovine case were compared to those of human infants, and va

Effect of pre- and postnatal alcohol consumption on GABA levels of various brain regions in the rat offspring.

The effect of maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy and lactation on gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels in different rat brain regions of 3-week-old pups was investigated. There was a significant decrease in the thalamus, pons, cerebellum and hippocampus, no change in posterior colliculus, occipital cortex, temporal cortex, hypothalamus, septum or striatum and a significant increase in frontal cortex, olfactory bulbs, anterior colliculus and amygdala. These modifications could be a consequence of alterations in membrane permeability and may be related to the behavioural disorders as

Physiological, biochemical and molecular mechanisms of salt appetite control by mineralocorticoid action in brain.

Adrenocortical hormone effects in the central nervous system depend on steroid interaction with intracellular receptors, which belong to a superfamily of ligand-activated transcription factors. Using a combination of biochemical and molecular biology techniques, we have demonstrated: 1. the localization of mineralocorticoid receptors in the brain, with highest density present in hippocampus, lateral septum and some amygdaloid nuclei; 2. the arousal of a mineralocorticoid-specific behavior such as salt appetite, coincident with inhibition of the biosynthesis/activity of (Na+K)ATPase in some amy

Tissue growth hormone release inhibiting hormone-like immunoreactivity in experimental hypothyroidism and hypopituitarism.

Hypothyroidism in rats was associated with an increase in immuno-reactive GH-RIH in brain, pancreas and gut, although release from the latter may be diminished as portal GH-RIH-like immunoreactivity was lower than control values. Hypophysectomy resulted in a depletion of immunoreactive GH-RIH in the septum and preoptic area of the brain and gastric antrum, but an increase in pancreas; portal venous GH-RIH-like immunoreactivity was not different from control concentrations, possibly reflecting both elevated and lowered immunol-reactive GH-RIH in different regions of tissue subserved by the port

The forkhead box F1 transcription factor is expressed in brain and head mesenchyme during mouse embryonic development.

The forkhead box f1 (Foxf1) transcription factor is expressed in septum transversum mesenchyme and splanchnic (visceral) mesoderm, which give rise to mesenchymal cells of gut-derived organs such as liver, gall bladder, lung, stomach, and intestine. Foxf1 -/- embryos die in utero and haploinsufficiency of the Foxf1 gene resulted in a variety of developmental abnormalities of the lung, gall bladder, esophagus, and trachea and caused defects in liver and lung repair. In this study, we used Foxf1 +/- mouse embryos containing the beta-Galactosidase (beta-Gal) gene knocked into the Foxf1 locus to ex

Cellular localization of atrial natriuretic peptide and tissue kallikrein in the human hypothalamus.

In the kidney, renal atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) is considered to play an important role in water and salt homeostasis. Immunoreactive ANP in the brain of lower invertebrates, such as the rat, has been shown to be localized in the hypothalamus and septum. Several studies have investigated the possibility of a regulatory system in the brain similar to that of the kidney. Since neuronal function is acutely sensitive to disturbances of the intracranial water and salt balance we have attempted to immunolocalize ANP-containing cells in the normal human hypothalamus, using a polyclonal antiseru

[Midline tumors of the central nervous system].

The anatomy of the supratentoriel midline structures of the brain is complex: corpus callosum, third ventricle, trigone, choroid plexus, pineal gland, falx cerebri. Different types of tumors can arise from these structures including tumors of the trigone and septum, tumors of the falx, third ventricular tumors and pinal region tumors. These tumors share similar features: minimal clinical symptoms despite their occasional large size, mild non-specific intracranial hypertension syndrome, value of MRI for depiction of tumor location, stereotactic biopsy, relative difficulty of surgical management

Cleft lip and palate associated with malformation of the central nervous system: a prospective neurosonographic study.

A prospective neurosonographic study was undertaken on 190 patients with non-syndrome cleft lip and/or palate. Among them, six cases (3.2%) demonstrated malformations of the central nervous system. Included were four cases of midline cleft lip and palate showing holoprosencephaly; one case of bilateral cleft lip and midline cleft palate showing dysplasia of the septum pallicidum and one case of bilateral cleft lip and palate showing dysgenesis of corpus callosum. The patients with midline clefts were not obligatory associated with malformation of the brain, but their incidence was higher (four

Clinical characteristics of septo-optic dysplasia accompanied by congenital central hypothyroidism in Japan.

Septo-optic dysplasia (SOD) is a congenital anomaly in which agenesis of the septum pellucidum and optic nerve hypoplasia are accompanied by hypopituitarism. Typically, the symptoms develop in 3 organs, the brain, eyes, and pituitary, and approximately one third of the patients present with all of the three cardinal features. The diagnostic criteria for SOD were established in Japan in 2015. The purpose of this study is to review clinical features regarding SOD patients with hypopituitarism in Japan. In this study, 21 patients with SOD were identified by a questionnaire survey for congenital c

In vivo micro magnetic resonance imaging signal changes in scrapie infected mice.

Signal abnormalities on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) T2-weighted images (T2WI) have been described in patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease; however, the pathology underlying these findings remains to be fully described. We investigated the time-course of signal alterations in a murine model of prion disease using in vivo 9.4 Tesla micro magnetic resonance imaging (muMRI). The topography of muMRI signal changes was correlated with the accumulation of proteinase resistant PrP(Sc) in corresponding brain sections. Increased signal intensity on T2WI was observed in the septum and in the hipp

Glucocorticoid regulation of vasopressin V1a receptors in rat forebrain.

Vasopressin V1a receptors (V1aRs) are expressed in the septum of the rat brain where they are thought to mediate several of the physiologic and behavioral effects of this neuropeptide. We have investigated the effects of adrenal steroids on forebrain V1aRs. Rats were bilaterally adrenalectomized (ADX) and hormone replaced with either corticosterone (CORT), dexamethasone (DEX) or aldosterone (ALDO) at different concentrations. V1aR mRNA was evaluated using in situ hybridization, and V1aR binding site density was quantified using a specific iodinated V1aR antagonist [125I]d(CH2)5Sar7-AVP (125I-S

Dysfunction of the Hippocampal-Lateral Septal Circuit Impairs Risk Assessment in Epileptic Mice.

Temporal lobe epilepsy, a chronic disease of the brain characterized by degeneration of the hippocampus, has impaired risk assessment. Risk assessment is vital for survival in complex environments with potential threats. However, the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. The intricate balance of gene regulation and expression across different brain regions is related to the structure and function of specific neuron subtypes. In particular, excitation/inhibition imbalance caused by hyperexcitability of glutamatergic neurons and/or dysfunction of GABAergic neurons, have been implicated i

A re-examination of septal lesion-induced weight gain in female rats.

Previous studies that examined the effects of knife cuts ventral to the septal area, or the pattern of anterograde degeneration after other obesity-inducing lesions or cuts, have implicated the septal area in feeding behavior. However, lesion studies have been inconsistent. In the present study, large electrolytic lesions that destroyed all or nearly all of the septal area resulted in excessive weight gain in female rats (25 g/20 days compared to 1 g/20 days for controls). Lesions confined to the ventral septum produced equal weight gains, but rats with lesions confined to the dorsal septum di

Isolated Absent Septum Pellucidum: A Retrospective Study of Fetal Diagnosis and Postnatal Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Absent septum pellucidum (ASP) is a brain abnormality often associated with neuroanatomic abnormalities including septo-optic dysplasia (SOD). We aimed to determine how frequently prenatally diagnosed isolated ASP is confirmed by postnatal imaging and to examine clinical outcomes for ASP. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of maternal-fetal dyads referred to Children's National Hospital from January 1, 2012, to June 30, 2019. We included cases with fetal diagnosis of isolated or complex ASP. Diagnosis was based on ASP and the presence or absence of additional neuroanatomic fi

Central Neurocytoma of the Lateral Ventricle Presenting with Chronic Headache: A Case Report of a Rare Intraventricular Tumor.

BACKGROUND: Central neurocytoma is an uncommon intraventricular neuronal tumor that usually behaves in a benign manner and primarily affects young adults. It most often originates from the septum pellucidum or the walls of the lateral ventricles and typically manifests with features of raised intracranial pressure. Because its clinical presentation is often nonspecific, it may initially be misdiagnosed as a primary headache disorder, leading to delays in appropriate evaluation. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 24-year-old woman without significant prior medical history who experienced severe,

Intranasal nanoemulsion for targeted medication delivery to the brain: a novel approach to treat psychotic disorder.

The brain is one of the most delicate & protected organs of the human body. The circulation of blood to the brain is secured by the blood-brain barrier (BBB), blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCSFB), and cerebrospinal fluid-brain barrier (CBB). These barriers also restrict the distribution of therapeutics to the central nervous system (CNS) for the treatment of any psychotic disorder. Oral & parenteral routes are the main routes for the delivery of anti-psychotics to the brain. Still, associated drawbacks include the stomach's acidic pH, first-pass metabolism, enzymatic degradation, plasma p
