BACKGROUND: Morning glory optic disc anomaly (MGODA) is a rare congenital defect of the optic nerve head. The optic nerve is enlarged, and its conical excavation is filled with glial tissue. Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare malignancy believed to originate from the serous membranes and it is highly aggressive with 5-year overall survival of 18.4%. Only a small number of DSRCT cases have been documented. A tympanometric in vitro model was used to measure the mechanoacoustic properties of the tympanic membrane. We studied 39 eyes with ocular histoplasmosis and peripapillary neovascular membranes for an average of 12 months. On the basis of clinical findings, 19 were selected for treatment with photocoagulation. Of the treated eyes, 12 (63%) had a visual result of 6/12 (20/40) or better. The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the usefulness of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) assays in effusion fluids for the diagnosis of cancer. From 1978 to 1981, 63 patients totaling 67 effusions were investigated for malignant cells and CEA concentrations. We report the case of a 19-year-old patient with symptomatic unilateral serous maculopathy associated with an optic nerve coloboma. Fluorescein angiography detected a focal late leak at the temporal edge of the coloboma which was later found to correspond with an area of choroidal neovascularisation on optical coherence tomography angiography. A course of intravitreal ranibizumab achieved good clinical and structural response. This report contributes to the evidence that maculopathies associated with cavitary optic nerve anomalies may in some instances result from choroidal neovascularisation.
