Technology-Related Trauma in Sexual and Reproductive Health Digital Technologies: Grounded Theory Study.

BACKGROUND: Digital health technologies are increasingly used as complementary and alternative means of seeking sexual and reproductive health services. These platforms now play a critical role in facilitating services such as contraception counseling, abortion care, sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment, and fertility-related support, particularly for individuals who face barriers to in-person care. Despite their increasing prevalence, there is an emerging concern that such platforms could inadvertently trigger or perpetuate trauma among end-user patients. This risk is particul

Childhood trauma and risky sexual behaviors: Comparing positive and negative emotion-related processes.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma (CT) is associated with a range of adverse outcomes in adulthood, including increased engagement in risky sexual behaviors (RSBs). Theoretically, individuals with a history of CT may experience difficulties with regulating emotions, resulting in maladaptive behavioral responses that occur during emotional experiences. However, it is unclear whether positive or negative emotions primarily drive these behaviors. OBJECTIVE: The present study sought to compare the mediating role of positive and negative emotion dysregulation in the relationship between CT and RSBs. P

Military sexual trauma in the United States: Results from a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: The reported prevalence of military sexual trauma (MST) has increased over the past decades in the United States, yet scarce population-based studies have examined the prevalence, correlates, and health burden of MST in the general veteran population. METHODS: Data were from the 2019-2020 National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study, a population-based survey of veterans (n = 4069). ANALYSES: (1) estimated the prevalence of MST; (2) identified sex-stratified sociodemographic, military, and trauma characteristics associated with MST; and (3) examined sex-stratified association

Military sexual trauma: Exploring the moderating role of restrictive emotionality among male veterans.

Objective: Military Sexual Trauma (MST) has been found to be positively associated with mental health outcomes, such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, depressive symptoms, symptoms of anxiety, and insomnia severity (Jenkins et al., 2015; O'Brien & Sher, 2013). Male survivors of MST face unique challenges, including concerns associated with hypermasculinity (e.g., restrictive emotionality [RE]). Men with high RE (difficulty expressing emotions) report more negative mental health outcomes compared to men with low RE (Good et al., 1995). The present study investigated whether RE m

It gets better: childhood sexual abuse and trauma symptoms in female older adults.

While there has been great deal of research conducted on the effects of child sexual abuse (CSA) on trauma symptoms in children and adults, there is less knowledge on the effects on trauma symptoms in female older adult CSA survivors. The aim of this study was to investigate current symptoms of trauma in adult female survivors of child sexual abuse across each successive decade, beginning with eighteen year olds. This retrospective, anonymous online study gathered a sample of 223 adult female survivors of CSA (38 of whom were aged 50-59 (17%), and 20 of whom were 60+ years of age (9%)), and su

Identifying factors associated with suicidal ideation and suicide attempts following military sexual trauma.

BACKGROUND: As increasing research demonstrates that military sexual trauma (MST) is associated with suicidal ideation and attempts, discerning factors that place MST survivors at risk for these outcomes is critical. The present study aimed to: (1) characterize suicidal ideation and attempts among MST survivors; (2) identify factors associated with post-MST suicide attempts, post-MST suicidal ideation, and past-week suicidal ideation. METHODS: A convenience sample of 108 veterans (66 women, 42 men) who reported a history of MST participated in this cross-sectional study. Pre-MST suicidal idea

Regular past year cannabis use in women veterans and associations with sexual trauma.

INTRODUCTION: This study sought to describe the prevalence of regular past year cannabis use (i.e., at least monthly use) in women veterans, to characterize women veterans reporting this level of use, and to examine the independent contributions of sexual trauma across the lifespan on regular past year cannabis use. METHODS: A national online survey on women veterans' health, with targeted oversampling of lesbian and bisexual women, collected data from US armed forces women veterans, 18 or older, living in the US (N = 636). RESULTS: Eleven percent of women reported regular cannabis use (5% h

Military sexual trauma survivors' perceptions of veterans health administration care: A qualitative examination.

Although the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) provides free health care related to military sexual trauma (MST), many veterans forgo or delay such care, underscoring the need for research aimed at understanding MST survivors' perceptions and concerns regarding VHA care. This study employed a qualitative phenomenological approach to describe MST survivors': (a) perceptions of VHA care, (b) concerns about VHA care, and (c) suggestions for how VHA can facilitate recovery from MST. Fifty veterans (32 women, 18 men) with histories of MST participated in semistructured interviews. Transcripts we

Improved Attachment Style for Female Veterans Who Graduated Warrior Renew Sexual Trauma Treatment.

The Warrior Renew sexual trauma treatment program proposes to target perceived attachment style and the internal working models of interpersonal relationships. This study examined scores on the Relationships Scales Questionnaire and Brief Symptom Inventory pre- and posttreatment in a sample of 62 female veterans who graduated the program. Findings revealed that graduates of Warrior Renew reported significant decreases in fearful and dismissive insecure attachment and significant increases in secure attachment. Scores were significantly correlated with symptoms. Findings lend support to an upwa

Trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder, and depression among sexual minority and heterosexual women veterans.

This study examined the impact of various traumas across the life span on screening positive for current posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression among heterosexual and sexual minority women veterans. Women veterans were recruited over the Internet (N = 706, 37% lesbian or bisexual) to participate in an anonymous, online survey. We assessed childhood trauma; adult sexual assault and adult physical victimization before, during, and after the military; combat exposure; perceived sexist discrimination during military service; sexual minority military stressors; past-year sexist events;

Trauma Characteristics and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder among Adolescent Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse.

This study examined the relationship between the characteristics of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and the severity of consequent posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, suicidal ideation, and substance use in a sample of 83 female adolescents aged 13-18 years seeking treatment for PTSD. Nearly two-thirds of the sample (60.7%, n = 51) reported the perpetrator of the CSA was a relative. A large portion (40.5%, n = 34) of the sample reported being victimized once, while almost a quarter of the sample reported chronic victimization (23.8%, n = 20). PTSD and depression scores were in the c

Trauma centrality and PTSD symptom severity in adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

Theorists have posited that regarding a trauma as central to one's identity leads to greater posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom severity. To test this hypothesis, we administered the Centrality of Events Scale (CES) to women reporting a history of childhood sexual abuse (N = 102). The CES scores were correlated with PTSD symptom severity, depression severity, and self-esteem. In addition, we conducted a principal component analysis (PCA) to evaluate factors underlying the CES. The PCA yielded 3 factors reflecting (a) the centrality and integration of the trauma, (b) whether the event

Applying network analysis to psychological comorbidity and health behavior: Depression, PTSD, and sexual risk in sexual minority men with trauma histories.

OBJECTIVE: High rates of depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) contribute to sexual risk, particularly in men who have sex with men (MSM) who have experienced childhood sexual abuse. The comorbidity between depression and PTSD and mechanisms by which they contribute to sexual risk in MSM remain unclear. This study sought to demonstrate the feasibility and utility of a network approach to (a) characterize symptom interconnections between depression and PTSD in MSM, (b) identify specific symptoms related to sexual risk behavior, and (c) compare symptom networks across groups at dif

How do people with a history of sexual abuse experience talking therapies for sexual trauma? A systematic review of qualitative findings.

OBJECTIVES: This systematic review investigated the qualitative experiences of sexual abuse survivors in talking therapy treatments with respect to the helpful and hindering aspects of therapy. METHODS: Searches were conducted on five databases; PubMed, Web of Science, PyscInfo, PsycArticles and PsycExtra and through searching reference lists. Papers were included where they provided qualitative primary data of client experiences of therapy, did not involve specialist clinical populations and were written in English. Papers were included irrespective of whether study participants had experien

Study design and interventions for a peer-delivered motivational interviewing group treatment for sexual and gender minority male sexual trauma survivors.

Sexual abuse of boys and men is a public health problem that has received relatively little attention from clinical scholars and researchers. Given unique pathways for development of and recovery from trauma-related emotional distress, sexual abuse survivors who identify as men may require distinct psychosocial interventions to engage in formal mental health care and assist in symptom reduction. This paper describes the rationale for and methodology of a randomized controlled trial comparing the effectiveness of Motivational Interviewing (MI) versus MI with affirmative care (MI-AC) for sexual

Sexual health and sexual trauma in women with severe mental illness: An exploratory survey of Western Australian community mental health services.

Australian women attending community mental health services were surveyed to determine the relationship between sexual trauma, sexual activity, and sexual health seeking behaviors. Self-reported history of "forced sex" was 58.4% (n = 122 out of 220). Latent class analysis revealed a three-class model: "sexually active and health seeking," "low sexual activity and health seeking" and "low sexual activity and not health seeking." An association with general practitioner engagement and sexual health seeking behaviors was found. Rates of self-reported sexual trauma reinforce the need for screening

The impact of substance use, sexual trauma, and intimate partner violence on sexual risk intervention outcomes in couples: a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Few HIV prevention interventions focus on sexual risk reduction as mutual process determined by couple members, though risk behaviors are inter-dependent. PURPOSE: This trial examined the impact of substance use, history of sexual trauma, and intimate partner violence on sexual risk associated with participation in a risk reduction intervention. METHODS: HIV seroconcordant and serodiscordant multicultural couples in Miami, Florida (n = 216) were randomized to group (n = 112) or individual (n = 104) couple-based interventions. RESULTS: Group intervention participants increased co

The development of a sexual abuse severity score: characteristics of childhood sexual abuse associated with trauma symptomatology, somatization, and alcohol abuse.

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is common and is associated with both mental and physical health problems in adulthood. Using data from an age- and sex-stratified population survey of 600 Olmsted County, Minnesota, residents, a Sexual Abuse Severity Score was developed. The abuse characteristics of 156 CSA respondents were associated with self-reported trauma, somatization, and alcohol use. Characteristics included age of first sexual abuse, more than one perpetrator, degree of coercion, severity of abuse (i.e., attempted intercourse is more severe than fondling), and the number of occurrences. When Traumas Collide: Implications and Coping Strategies of Israeli Survivors at the Intersection of Collective War Trauma and Past Sexual Violence.

War as a collective trauma can severely harm the psychosocial well-being of individuals, disrupting their sense of safety, autonomy, and meaning of life. War also weakens individual and communal senses of safety and stability, erodes social cohesion, and forces large-scale displacement, as civilians seek security elsewhere. Research indicates that individuals with prior exposure to traumatic events may be more susceptible to experiencing distress when confronted by additional stressors, especially in times of continuous traumatic stress, such as war. This study examines the impact of the Octob
