Miniature deep-sea morphable robot with multimodal locomotion.

Research on miniature deep-sea robots is an emerging field focused on the development of deployable, compact devices capable of interacting with the unique environments and organisms of the deep ocean. In this study, we present a design strategy for a centimeter-scale deep-sea soft actuator, weighing 16 grams, that incorporates bistable chiral metamaterials and tube-sealed shape memory alloys. According to our design, the increased modulus induced by the hydrostatic pressure was used to achieve a higher snapping velocity of the bistable chiral unit, thus lifting the actuator's performance. We

SMA-Driven Assistive Hand for Rehabilitation Therapy.

Home-based rehabilitation supports neuromuscular patients while minimising the need for extensive clinical supervision. Due to a growing number of stroke survivors, this approach appears to be more practical for patients across diverse demographics. Although existing hardware-based assistive devices are pretty common, they have limitations in terms of usability, wearability, and safety, as well as other technical constraints such as bulkiness and torque-to-weight ratios. To overcome these issues, soft actuator-based assistance prioritises user safety and ergonomics, as it is more wearable and

Cardiovascular stents: overview, evolution, and next generation.

Compared to bare-metal stents (BMSs), drug-eluting stents (DESs) have been regarded as a revolutionary change in coronary artery diseases (CADs). Releasing pharmaceutical agents from the stent surface was a promising progress in the realm of cardiovascular stents. Despite supreme advantages over BMSs, in-stent restenosis (ISR) and long-term safety of DESs are still deemed ongoing concerns over clinically application of DESs. The failure of DESs for long-term clinical use is associated with following factors including permanent polymeric coating materials, metallic stent platforms, non-optimal

Biocompatible, smooth, plasma-treated nickel-titanium surface--an adequate platform for cell growth.

High nickel content is believed to reduce the number of biomedical applications of nickel-titanium alloy due to the reported toxicity of nickel. The reduction in nickel release and minimized exposure of the cell to nickel can optimize the biocompatibility of the alloy and increase its use in the application where its shape memory effects and pseudoelasticity are particularly useful, e.g., spinal implants. Many treatments have been tried to improve the biocompatibility of Ni-Ti, and results suggest that a native, smooth surface could provide sufficient tolerance, biologically. We hypothesized t

Comparison of hearing results of nitinol SMART stapes piston prosthesis with conventional piston prostheses: postoperative results of nitinol stapes prosthesis.

OBJECTIVE: Recently, a new stapedotomy piston prosthesis, which is a composite metal alloy of nickel and titanium known as nitinol, has been introduced into medical use. This biocompatible alloy has the unique property of shape-memory, which permits tight self-crimping when heat is applied to the wire. To substantiate the favorable initial observations with the SMART piston, this study was undertaken to compare these results (n=26) with those obtained using conventional stainless steel or platinum ribbon prostheses (n=28). Evolution of a percutaneous fetoscopic access system for single-port tracheal occlusion.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Prenatal tracheal occlusion currently is being assessed as a treatment modality for congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). The development of a totally percutaneous fetoscopic access system would help avoid the need for maternal laparotomy and reduce the morbidity rate of fetal surgical procedures for the mother. Laparoscopic radial expansion sheaths and Seldinger technique-based vascular catheters both have been advocated as means of achieving amniotic cavity access. The authors have investigated these 2 systems in an attempt to develop a reliable method for achieving safe

Small-Scale Soft Terrestrial Robot with Electrically Driven Multi-Modal Locomotion Capability.

Small-scale soft robots, despite their potential for adaptability in unknown environments, often encounter performance constraints due to inherent limitations within soft actuators and compact bodies. To address this problem, we proposed a fast-moving soft robot driven by electroactive materials. The robot combines the advantages of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) and shape memory alloy (SMA) spring actuators, enabling its high-performance multi-modal locomotion in a small and lightweight design. Theoretical models were constructed for both DEAs and SMA spring actuators to analyze the pe

Management of Distal Tibial Metaphyseal Bone Defects With an Intramedullary Nitinol Scaffold: A Novel Technique.

UNLABELLED: Difficult problems that are faced when reconstructing severe pilon fractures include filling metaphyseal defects and supporting an impacted, multifragmented articular surface. Supplements to plate fixation currently available in a surgeon's armamentarium include cancellous bone autograft, structural bone allograft, demineralized bone matrix, and calcium-based cements. Cancellous autograft possesses limited inherent mechanical stability and is associated with graft site morbidity. Structural allografts incorporate inconsistently and are plagued by late resorption. Demineralized bone

SMA-actuated bionic eye for humanoid expression.

Inspired by the mechanism of human facial expression, this paper designs and implements a bionic eye system driven by shape memory alloy (SMA) springs. To meet the requirements of multidirectional eye movement, a spherical joint actuation model based on antagonistic SMA spring arrangement is proposed. Four SMA springs are evenly spaced at 90° intervals around the spherical joint. By differentially contracting the opposing springs, precise upward, downward, leftward, and rightward eye rotations are achieved, and real-time force sensor feedback is used to construct a closed-loop PID controller.

A lightweight prosthetic hand with 19-DOF dexterity and human-level functions.

A human hand has 23-degree-of-freedom (DOF) dexterity for managing activities of daily living (ADLs). Current prosthetic hands, primarily driven by motors or pneumatic actuators, fall short in replicating human-level functions, primarily due to limited DOF. Here, we develop a lightweight prosthetic hand that possesses biomimetic 19-DOF dexterity by integrating 38 shape-memory alloy (SMA) actuators to precisely control five fingers and the wrist. The prosthetic hand features real-time sensing of joint angles in each finger, feeding data into a control module for selectively heating or cooling S

[Suture expansion osteogenesis for closing the posterior hard palate: an experimental study in dogs].

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the possibility of a new approach, e.g. suture expansion osteogenesis for closing the posterior hard palate. By this technique we might hope to replace missing tissue in the clefts by tissue regeneration and achieve bony repair in the posterior hard palate and circumvent the problems of speech and facial growth seen in traditional cleft surgery. METHODS: Nine 8-month mongrel dogs were divided into three groups: the control(n = 1), sham control(n = 2) and the experimental group(n = 6). In six experimental dogs, an 8 mm wide cleft was made surgically. Suture e

Bio-inspired functional recursion enables multi-mode locomotion in a 140-mg morphing microrobot.

Insects traverse diverse environments by reusing body structures and appendages through adaptable mechanics, an ability that remains a grand challenge for insect-scale robotics under strict mass constraints. Here we present an insect‑scale robot that integrates aerial takeoff and open-loop attitude modulation, terrestrial crawling, water-surface gliding, and electrowetting-triggered controlled immersion within a 140-mg platform, with these capabilities demonstrated as representative open-loop functional tests rather than a single continuous autonomous mission. Moving beyond actuator‑heavy desi

Nonlinear Modeling of Surface Roughness in Turning of Nitinol: Influence of Cutting Forces, Temperature, and Negative Rake Angle Tools.

This study investigates the influence of cutting parameters on surface roughness and process conditions during turning of NiTi (Nitinol), a difficult-to-machine shape memory alloy. Special attention was given to the coupling between mechanical and thermal phenomena governing surface formation. Experiments were conducted using cubic boron nitride (CBN) and ceramic tools with negative rake angle geometry. A two-factor design of experiments (DOE) was applied, with cutting speed (vc) and feed rate (f) as input variables, while cutting depth remained constant. Cutting force (Fc), temperature (T), a

Experimental Study on Flexural Behaviour of Diagonally Notched Wooden Beams Strengthened with Prestressed Superelastic SMA Wires.

Timber structures constitute the primary form of ancient architecture in China and possess immense historical, artistic and scientific value. Having withstood the ravages of time over hundreds or even thousands of years, timber beams-one of the main load-bearing components in such structures-have largely sustained varying degrees of damage and require repair and reinforcement. Superelastic shape memory alloy (SMA) wires offer numerous advantages, including high strength, corrosion resistance, and stable recovery stress via stress-induced martensitic transformation, and are currently widely use
