Pregnancy Toxemia in Sheep and Goats.

Pregnancy toxemia is a common metabolic disease of late pregnant ewes and does, which potentially has devastating impacts on health and performance. This metabolic syndrome is not only one of over conditioned animals but is more typically associated with inadequate energy intake to support pregnancy requirements leading to body protein and fat mobilization. Blood chemistries provide insight into diagnosis and possibly may predict responsiveness to treatment and outcome. Early recognition of the disease with appropriate intervention is the best approach to minimizing the impact of this disease

Pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of furosemide in sheep.

The pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of furosemide were determined following intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM), and subcutaneous (SC) administrations at 2.5 mg/kg dose in sheep. The study was conducted on six healthy sheep in a three-way, three-period, crossover pharmacokinetic design with a 15-day washout period. In first period, furosemide was randomly administered via IV to 2 sheep, IM to 2 sheep and SC to 2 sheep. In second and third periods, each sheep received furosemide via different routes of administration with the 15-day washout period. Plasma concentrations were determined us

Presence of contagious yawning in sheep.

Contagious yawning is triggered by others yawning, and it has previously been reported in humans, primates and several experimental and companion mammals. Whereas it might be a response to an innate releasing mechanism, contagious yawning is also considered to involve emotional contagion. Here, we demonstrate that sheep, the animal model of livestock animals, also experience contagious yawning. Twelve adult castrated Corriedale sheep were used in this study. Pairs of sheep were adjacently restrained with or without a wooden divider panel to shield them from viewing the other. Their behaviors w

Laryngeal Chondritis in Sheep in Iceland.

Laryngeal chondritis is a chronic disease in sheep with low morbidity, high mortality and unresolved pathogenesis. The disease has been recognized recently in Iceland and affects both ewes and rams. Animals of different ages are affected, but lambs and yearlings predominate. The disease is seen in housed animals and most cases occur during the late winter months. We report the gross and microscopical findings in 45 cases of laryngeal chondritis in Icelandic sheep.

Pythiosis of the digestive tract in sheep.

Cutaneous and rhinofacial infections by Pythium insidiosum have previously been reported in sheep in Brazil. In the current study, a new form of pythiosis involving the alimentary tract of 2 nursing lambs from 2 different farms in the semiarid region of Brazil is described. The first lamb showed food regurgitation, lethargy, and anorexia, and died 5 days after the presentation of clinical signs. The second lamb had no history of gastrointestinal disease before death. Necropsy findings were similar in both lambs. The mucosa of the esophagus, reticulum, rumen, omasum, and abomasum showed ulcerat

Diagnosis and treatment of coenurosis in sheep.

Coenurosis is a disease of the central nervous system in sheep, caused by Coenurus cerebralis, the larval stage of Taenia multiceps, a tapeworm, which infests the small intestine of carnivores. In 80-90% of cases, the cyst is located in one cerebral hemisphere, whilst in 5-10% of cases, it is localised in the cerebellum; rarely it involves two sites in the brain of the affected animal. Listeriosis, louping-ill, sarcocystosis and polioencephalomalacia and brain abscessation should be considered when formulating a diagnosis of acute coenurosis. In all cases, it is essential to carefully examine

Olfaction in the female sheep botfly.

The nasal botfly Oestrus ovis (Diptera, Cyclorrhapha: Oestridae) is a myiasis-causing insect species, which affects the health of sheep, goats and humans. Gravid females are viviparous and larviposit into the animal's nostrils. Host-searching and larvipositing flies are visually guided and influenced by climatic conditions, whereas olfaction seemed to play no role in this process. However, here, we show that the antennae of adult O. ovis female flies are relatively small but well developed and inhabited by several types of olfactory sensilla. Further, we show that the antennal lobes of this sp

Welfare consequences of mulesing of sheep.

Mulesing is traditionally performed on approximately 80% of Merino wool-producing sheep in Australia. Mulesing produces a stress response that persists for 24 to 48 hours. Behavioural changes indicative of pain and discomfort resolve within 24 and 48 hours, respectively. Reductions in weight gain may persist for 14 days. The acute stress response to mulesing has been shown to be similar to that produced by shearing, castration and mild flystrike, but mulesing has a longer duration of response (24 to 48 hours) than shearing (1 hour) or knife castration (8 to 24 hours), whereas flystrike respons

Isolation and transplantation of spermatogonia in sheep.

Studies in rodents show that spermatogonial transplantation is an excellent new tool for studying spermatogenesis and for preservation and dissemination of genetics. The aim of this study was to adapt the technique to rams. Two issues were addressed: purification of stem cell spermatogonia, and efficient injection of donor spermatogonia into the seminiferous tubules of rams. We compared differential plating and Percoll gradient methods for purifying donor spermatogonia from ram lamb testes. Spermatogonia were identified with an antibody against PGP 9.5, a ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase. Both p

Wound myiasis of sheep in Hungary.

In Hungary, 4388 sheep in six flocks were surveyed in June-August of 1992-1995 to gather basic data on wound myiasis, its incidence, the predominant fly species involved and the clinical manifestations of infestation. The pathogenesis and economic significance of wound myiasis, as well as the interrelation of breed and sex with infestation levels, were evaluated. Active wound myiasis was recorded in all flocks, in 17.6% (774/4388) of the inspected sheep. The incidence varied among flocks and inspections from 4.7% to 38.9%, but it was significantly greater in imported breeds (28.8%, 651/2257) t

Heartwater in sheep and goats: a review.

Heartwater (cowdriosis) is an important, often fatal, tick-borne disease of domestic and wild ruminants in sub-Saharan Africa and some Indian Ocean and Caribbean islands. The causal agent, Cowdria ruminantium (Cowdry 1925), is a rickettsia closely related to members of the genus Ehrlichia, and is probably a part of a complex of genomic species. Imported breeds of sheep and goats (especially Angoras) are highly susceptible, but indigenous populations of endemic areas may be resistant to infection. Very young stock (less than 9 d old) possess a natural resistance that is unrelated to the immune

Drug needs of the sheep industry.

Two areas of drug needs in the sheep industry are reviewed. The first is the need for prolificacy drugs such as those used outside the country. These drugs would encourage out-of-season lambing, increased lambs/per ewe during the traditional lambing season and synchronize estrus for easier management of lambing and increased use of artificial insemination for faster genetic improvement. The other area is drugs to treat or prevent major causes of disease, specifically abortion, neonatal diarrhea, pneumonia and internal parasitism. Efficacious drugs for these diseases are either not now cleared

Inhalational administration of cocaine in sheep.

A pipe for administration of inhaled cocaine and its pyrolytic products in laboratory animals was developed and tested. In-vitro trials showed 30.0 +/- 5.2% (mean +/- SE) recovery of cocaine in solvent. Five non-pregnant ewes were instrumented with tracheal T-tubes and vascular catheters. After surgical recovery, ewes received three doses of cocaine (free base) in a randomized fashion; 2 mg/kg and 4 mg/kg both by inhalation, and 2 mg/kg intravenously. Arterial blood samples were collected and assayed for cocaine and its major metabolites by high performance liquid chromatography. Blood pressur

The pathology of Johne's disease in sheep.

The clinical, gross and histopathological findings in 50 sheep affected with Johne's disease are described. Clinically 90% were emaciated and 20% showed severe diarrhoea. On necropsy there was thickening of the walls of the intestines, particularly of the ileum, caecum and less frequently the jejunum, but in 36% of sheep the changes were only mild. Histologically there was a granulomatous enteritis, typhlitis and colitis, with the most severe changes in the terminal ileum. High numbers of acid-fast organisms were present in the terminal ileum in over 70% of sheep. Mycobacterium paratuberculosi

Coccidiosis and cryptosporidiosis in sheep and goats.

The protozoan diseases, coccidiosis and cryptosporidiosis, are important enteric diseases of sheep and goats, resulting in diarrhea, inefficient weight gains, and occasionally death. Coccidiosis is a widespread, serious economic disease affecting animals who are preweaned, recently weaned, or in unsanitary, stressful, or crowded conditions, as well as after entering feedlots. The Eimeria species in sheep and goats are relatively host specific. Control is accomplished through sanitation and by incorporating one of the modern coccidiostats, such as lasalocid or decoquinate, in feed or salt to en

Sheep as a source of human cryptosporidiosis.

Studies in north Wales on human cryptosporidiosis since 1983 have indicated that the infection may be acquired both from animals and by person-to-person transmission. Examination of veterinary data revealed a marked coincidence of the spring peak of infection in human beings with that seen in sheep. A case-control study was therefore set up to test the hypothesis that some of the human infections may have been acquired from contact with sheep. The results of the study confirmed a significant association.

Keratoconjunctivitis in a hill sheep flock.

Keratoconjunctivitis affected many ewes on a large, experimental husbandry, hill farm in early and midwinter in two consecutive years. Small sporadic outbreaks occurred among ewes during the following winters and among ewes and lambs in the summer and autumn. Mycoplasma conjunctivae was isolated from conjunctival swabs taken from affected sheep. Keratoconjunctivitis had not been recognised on the farm before and the infection was probably introduced with purchased rams. Prompt treatment prevented blindness; a single application of aureomycin topical powder with an intramuscular injection of a
