There is a growing consensus regarding the significant individual differences in responses to sleep inertia. However, little is known about the longitudinal trajectories of sleep inertia. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the incidence rates of sleep inertia, longitudinal trajectories, influencing factors and outcomes among intern nurses with shift work. A total of 1079 intern nurses with shift work completed online surveys at 2 weeks (T1) and 16 weeks (T2) after their clinical internship, respectively. The demographics and willingness to continue working as nurses, circadian type, sleep prob

BACKGROUND: The relationship between shift work, occupational physical activity (OPA), and CKM syndrome remains unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the independent and joint associations of these two factors with CKM syndrome.
METHODS: This study conducted a baseline survey in 2013 and a follow-up in 2023, with a total of 690 workers finally enrolled. CKM syndrome was diagnosed according to the American Heart Association (AHA) criteria. Participants were classified into fixed day shifts and shift work, and OPA into light/moderate and heavy/very heavy groups. Poisson regression was

The ability to adapt to night shift work varies greatly among individuals, but little is known about how personal traits and coping strategies interact to affect shift-work tolerance. This study aimed to identify how certain personal traits (e.g., flexibility, languidness, chronotype, and neuroticism) and behavioral and coping strategies influence shift-work tolerance. Additionally, it explored whether behavioral and coping strategies moderate the association between neuroticism and shift-work tolerance. In this cross-sectional study, nurses (N=297) working rotating shifts consisting of either

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate if current night shift work is associated with anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) concentrations.
STUDY DESIGN: We analyzed baseline data from participants in the Study of the Environment, Lifestyle, and Fibroids (SELF), a prospective cohort study of Black women recruited 2010-2012 in metropolitan Detroit, MI. Our cohort comprised 1641 participants with serum AMH determined at baseline. AMH concentrations were used to measure ovarian reserve, i.e. the quantity of oocytes remaining in the ovary. On self-administered baseline questionnaires, participants reported whether they

OBJECTIVES: Shift work is defined as any irregular work schedule that extends beyond the usual 9 am to 5 pm time frame. Evidence from outside medicine suggests that it may be related to detrimental health outcomes. Our objective from this study is to evaluate sleep quality, health risks, and chronic diseases among post-graduate resident physicians who work on rotating shifts at a large tertiary health care center.
STUDY DESIGN: A self-reported questionnaire-based cross-sectional study.
METHODS: Sleep quality was assessed by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) while anxiety and depression w

BACKGROUND: Managing nurses' work schedules in hospitals is challenging because employer needs, like shift changes at short notice and overtime, may conflict with nurses' desires for a predictable and stable schedule. Nurses should have a certain degree of control over their work schedules, and their supervisors should support their needs in scheduling. How perceived control over work schedules, perceived support from supervisors in scheduling, shift changes at short notice, and overtime affect nurses' emotional exhaustion and intentions to leave has not been studied.
OBJECTIVES: The aims are

Characteristics of work organization other than working time arrangements may contribute importantly to daytime sleepiness. The present study was designed to identify the psychosocial factors at work that predict daytime sleepiness in a sample of day and shift workers. Participants working at a pulp and chemical factory completed an annual questionnaire regarding psychosocial factors at work using the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Generic Job Stress Questionnaire (i.e., quantitative workload, variance in workload, job control, support from supervisor, coworkers, or

OBJECTIVES: Correctional employees exhibit elevated obesity rates. This study examines interrelations among health behaviors, health climate, body mass index (BMI), and work schedule.
METHODS: Using survey results from correctional supervisors (n = 157), mediation and moderated-mediation analyses were performed to examine how health behaviors explain relationships between obesity, work health climate (WHC) and family health climate (FHC), and work schedule.
RESULTS: Over 85% of the sample was overweight/obese (mean BMI = 30.20). Higher WHC and FHC were associated with lower BMI, mediated by

We investigated the relationship between shift work and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) among participants in the Japan Nurses' Health Study (JNHS). Responses of 9,728 female nurses to the 6th follow-up questionnaire were cross-sectionally analyzed. EDS was defined as an Epworth Sleepiness Scale score ≥11. EDS-associated factors were evaluated using Poisson regression analysis after adjustment for multiple confounders. Of the participants (mean age, 52.2 ± 8.0 yr), 28.7% were engaged in shift work, and the overall prevalence of EDS was 24.6%. EDS-associated factors were investigated separat

This cross-sectional study examined the association between shift work and thyroid function using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007 to 2010. Weighted univariate and multivariate regression models were applied, with additional subgroup and interaction analyses performed. A total of 3578 participants were included (mean age 41.17 ± 13.31 years). After adjusting for potential confounders, shift workers exhibited significantly higher levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) (β = 0.30; 95% CI: 0.14-0.45), thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) (β = 11.62; 95% CI: 3.49-19

OBJECTIVE: Stability in the timing of key daily routine behaviors such as working/doing housework, sleeping, eating, and engaging in social interactions (i.e., behavioral-social rhythms) contributes to health. This study examined whether behavioral-social rhythms were associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in retired night shift workers and retired day workers and explored whether past night shift work exposure moderated this association.
METHODS: A total of 154 retired older adults participated in this study. Multiple logistic regression models were used to examine associa

Background/Objectives: Prolonged working shifts may adversely affect healthcare workers' health, well-being, cognitive performance, and patient safety. Nevertheless, 24-h shifts remain commonly used in Latvian healthcare. This study aimed to examine healthcare workers' experiences of 24-h shift work, their attitudes toward revising this work schedule, and the main reported reasons underlying their preferences. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Latvia between October 2025 and February 2026. A structured 64-item questionnaire assessed sociodemographic and professional characteri

BACKGROUND: Shift work has been associated with poor health, sleep and fatigue problems and low satisfaction with working hours. However, one type of shift working, namely split shifts, have received little attention.
OBJECTIVE: This study examined stress, health and psychosocial aspects of split-shift schedules among bus drivers in urban transport.
METHODS: A questionnaire was distributed to drivers working more than 70% of full time which 235 drivers in total answered.
RESULTS: In general, drivers working split-shift schedules (n = 146) did not differ from drivers not working such shifts

Shift work is necessary for hospitalists to provide on-site 24-hour patient care. Like all shift workers, hospitalists working beyond daylight hours are subject to a misalignment between work obligations and the endogenous circadian system, which regulates sleep and alertness patterns. With chronic misalignment, sleep loss accumulates and can lead to shift work disorder or other chronic medical conditions. Hospitalists suffering from sleep deprivation also risk increased rates of medical errors. By realigning work and circadian schedules, a process called circadian adaptation, hospitalists can

The 24/7 economic activity has led to a growing demand for shift workers who now make up about 21% of the working population in Europe. Shift work causes desynchronization of biological and social rhythms and therefore increases the risk for physiological and psychological health issues. Night shifts, but in particular irregular shifts are considered to have numerous harmful effects on health and well-being. In this investigation, 185 shift workers employed at an Austrian railway company, filled in online questionnaires, which included the PSQI, the ESS, and items assessing sleep issues, their

BACKGROUND: Shift-workers may experience sleep disturbances more frequently than day-workers. Interactions between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), shift-work and other factors promoting sleepiness have never been studied. The present study was designed to assess the prevalence of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), high risk for OSA (HR) and insomnia in shift-workers and day-workers and to evaluate their mutual effects on the risk of home-to-work commuting car accidents or episodes of falling asleep during work.
METHODS: Workers (153 shift-workers, 85 day-workers) were evaluated for the presen
