Unstable rocker shoes promote recovery from marathon-induced muscle damage in novice runners.

We recently reported that wearing unstable rocker shoes (Masai Barefoot Technology: MBT) may enhance recovery from marathon race-induced fatigue. However, this earlier study only utilized a questionnaire. In this study, we evaluated MBT utilizing objective physiological measures of recovery from marathon-induced muscle damages. Twenty-five university student novice runners were divided into two groups. After running a full marathon, one group wore MBT shoes (MBT group), and the control group (CON) wore ordinary shoes daily for 1 week following the race. We measured maximal isometric joint torq

Modified track shoes and their effect on the EMG activity of calf muscles.

Although track and field spike shoes are crafted for runners, these shoes are not designed for regular walking. With such shoes, runners may eventually encounter serious chronic injuries such as plantar fasciitis, shin splints, achilles tendinitis, chondromalacia, and iliotibial band syndrome. To address this problem, a modified spike shoe was tested and compared to a regular spike shoe. The modification consists of adding a removable heel to the shoe sole in order to reduce the flexion of the foot and properly level the foot for walking. Nine healthy participants performed walking drills at 2

Healthcare Provider Knowledge and Utilization of the Medicare Therapeutic Shoe Benefit.

The Therapeutic Shoe Benefit (TSB) allows Medicare insurance beneficiaries to reduce their diabetic foot ulcer risk by providing offloading shoes. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the process is cumbersome and that not all providers are aware of this benefit. This study evaluated TSB awareness across multiple healthcare disciplines and documented barriers to utilization. An online study surveyed healthcare providers practicing in the United States to determine familiarity with TSB and barriers to prescribing therapeutic shoes. The project was IRB-reviewed and received exempt status. The survey

Is in-Shoe Microclimate a Neglected Contributor in the Pathway to Diabetic Foot Ulceration?

The identification of the key contributing factors which predispose the foot to ulceration, increasing the risk of recurrence and slow wound healing in diabetes mellitus (DM), has led to some significant research studies over the last 30 years, providing valuable insight into the mechanism leading to diabetic foot ulceration (DFU). Although, these contributory factors are similar to those identified in pressure ulceration occurring in other parts of the body (such as "bed pressure sores') where magnitude and/or duration of mechanical stress in the presence of sensory deficits are key causal fa

Pilot Study of Cadence, a Novel Shoe for Patients with Foot Drop.

Foot Drop is a mobility disorder that limits ankle dorsiflexion, complicating the swing phase of gait and balance. It is a common result of a neurological injury or disease such as stroke, cerebral palsy or multiple sclerosis. Here we present Cadence, a low-cost assistive shoe designed to passively improve the biomechanics and rhythmicity of gait for people with foot drop. The shoe reduces the magnitude of scuffing forces when dragging the foot forward across the ground by using regions of low-friction material that can retract into the shoe to restore friction during stance phase. We report t

[Forefoot relief with shoe inserts : Effects of different construction strategies].

BACKGROUND: Shoe inserts and shoe modifications are used to reduce plantar peak pressure. The effects of different shoe inserts and shoe construction strategies for relief of the forefoot have not yet been sufficiently evaluated. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of shoe inserts and shoe construction strategies (e.g. metatarsal pad, forefoot cushioning and control) and shoe modifications (e.g. flexible or stiff) on the peak plantar pressure in the forefoot region. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study 15 healthy subjects were recruited. Plantar pressure distribution was

The influence of shoe drop on the kinematics and kinetics of children tennis players.

This study investigated the immediate effects of reducing the shoe drop (i.e. the difference between the heel and the forefoot height) on the kinematics and kinetics of the lower extremities of children tennis players performing a tennis-specific movement. Thirteen children tennis players performed a series of simulated open stance forehands wearing 3 pairs of shoes differing only in the drop: 0 (D0), 6 (D6) and the control condition of 12 mm (D12). Two embedded forceplates and a motion capture system were used to analyse the ground reaction forces and ankle and knee joint angles and moments o

Assessment and treatment of foot-shoe fetish displayed by a man with autism.

Results of a functional analysis indicated that a man diagnosed with autism engaged in bizarre sexual behavior in the presence of women wearing sandals. Several treatments proved to be ineffective or impractical. By contrast, a response-interruption/time-out procedure quickly eliminated the problem behavior in multiple settings.

[Health effects of occupational exposure among shoe workers. A review].

World-wide epidemiological studies provide evidence that the employment in the shoe production and repair plants is associated with an enhanced risk for cancer (primarily nose and nasal sinuses). According to the majority of authors, it is induced by exposure to leather dust. It is also known that, leather dust particles contain numerous chemicals acquired during the process of leather tanning and finishing (chromium salts, vegetable dye extracts, mineral oils). Some of these compounds exert carcinogenic effect. This paper provides a review of the results of epidemiological studies on health e

[Effect of walking speed on pressure distribution of orthopedic shoe technology].

Lesions to the diabetic foot have various causes. However, there is broad consensus that excessive plantar pressure plays a major role in the chain of events leading to ulcerations and gangrenes. During walking, on the other hand, peak values of plantar pressure are likely to increase with velocity even in therapeutic shoes. Therefore, the question arises whether a moderate velocity should be recommended to diabetic patients to reduce the risk of foot lesions. In this study, two velocities were compared for different types of therapeutic footwear. The velocities selected were considered modera

Biomechanical analysis of the effect of orthotic shoe inserts: a review of the literature.

Physical activity is increasingly recognised as an important component of primary disease prevention. Overuse injuries are common sequelae of exercise and sporting activities in general, and of running in particular, frequently resulting in cessation of activity. It has been proposed that there is a link between foot shape, foot function and the occurrence of injury. As a means of treatment and prevention of further injury, orthoses and shoe inserts are widely prescribed in the belief that they can alter the pattern of lower extremity joints' alignment and movement. Although this is an assumpt

[Peripheral neuropathy caused by incongruous posture in shoe manufacture workers].

Nine cases of local neuropathy are described in shoe-manufacture workers. Clinical and electrophysiological examination excluded diseases such as toxic polyneuropathies due to n-hexane. Specific lesions of the ulnar nerve were located near the elbow where the forced and uncomfortable posture facilitated the compression of the nerve in the cubital tunnel. The severity of the neuropathies ranged from relatively slight, with paresthesia of some of the fingers, to evident hypotrophy of the inter-osseous muscles of the hand. All the 9 cases sewed shoe uppers using sewing machines operating 25 cm ab

Horse-shoe sandwich osteotomy of the edentulous maxilla as a preprosthetic procedure.

A preprosthetic procedure for treatment of severe atrophy of the maxilla is reported. By means of the horse-shoe sandwich osteotomy of the edentulous maxilla with interposition of iliac crest or ribs in combination with a modified submucous vestibuloplasty there is the possibility of increasing the vestibular and palatal height and improving the mucosal contour in one surgical session. The method, which is described in details, avoids the disadvantages of the earlier operation methods of direct osseous augmentation and the Le Fort-I-osteotomy of the edentulous maxilla. The satisfactory results

Shoe closure technologies for persons with reduced mobility: a narrative review.

PURPOSE: Shoe donning and doffing are a daily challenge for older adults and persons with conditions such as diabetes, stroke, arthritis, and Parkinson's disease, yet closure mechanisms have received little attention compared with sole design and slip resistance. This narrative review examines seven shoe closure technologies from the perspectives of mechanical performance and functional accessibility for persons with reduced mobility. METHODS: A narrative review was conducted drawing on peer-reviewed literature, patents, and industry sources identified through Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed,

The Development of a Built-In Shoe Plantar Pressure Measurement System for Children.

There is a rapid increase in plantar pressure from the infant to toddler stage, yet little is known about the reasons for this change. More information about plantar pressure distribution can help clinicians identify early-stage foot-related diseases that may occur during transitions from childhood to adulthood. This information also helps designers create shoes that adapt to different needs. This research describes the development of a low-cost, built-in shoe plantar pressure measurement system that determines foot pressure distribution in toddlers. The study aimed to improve and provide data
