BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Previous studies on differentially expressed genes in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) used to perform with para-cancerous tissues as normal control. However, the para-cancerous tissue of HCC is actually abnormal because they frequently contain hepatitis, cirrhosis, hyperplastic nodules or foci, etc. In order to explore the molecular mechanism and the responsible genes for hepatocarcinogenesis, through applying the HCC model of tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri chinensis), this study was designed to compare gene expression levels between HCC induced by different factors and th

The emetic responses induced by staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA), SEB, SEC2, SED, SEE, SEG, SEH, and SEI in the house musk shrew (Suncus murinus) were investigated. SEA, SEE, and SEI showed higher emetic activity in the house musk shrew than the other SEs. SEB, SEC2, SED, SEG, and SEH also induced emetic responses in this animal model but relatively high doses were required. The house musk shrew appears to be a valuable model for studying the mechanisms of emetic reactions caused by SEs.

The prenatal patterns of calretinin immunoreactivity were studied in the olfactory systems of Tupaia belangeri. We investigated the peripheral and primary central parts of the vomeronasal system and of the main olfactory system from the 19th to the 43rd (last) day of gestation and compared the findings with the known calretinin immunoreactivity patterns in adult T. belangeri and the published data on other mammals. The onset of calretinin immunoreactivity was noted in the main olfactory system on the 23rd day of gestation and, in the vomeronasal system, on the 25th day of gestation: single pre

The patterns of cell death and of macrophages were investigated in the forebrain and eyes of the tree shrew Tupaia belangeri during five phases of optic cup formation. Seventeen embryos were studied. Three- dimensional reconstructions were made from one embryo of each phase. In phase 1 (V-shaped optic evagination) a midline band of cell death passes through the closing anterior neuroporus. From phases 2 (optic vesicle) to 5 (far-advanced invagination) the midline band of cell death extends in the dorsal wall of the forebrain to its rostral pole and, further, into its ventral wall. At the appro

Cardiac musculature of the cranial vena cava in the common tree shrew (Tupaia glis) was examined by light and transmission electron microscopy. The common tree shrew has well developed cardiac myocyte layers in the tunica media of the cranial vena cava, extending from the right atrium to the root of the subclavian vein. Because the common tree shrew belongs to a primitive group of mammals, the occurrence of cardiac musculature in the cranial vena cava may be a common feature in lower mammals. The development of this musculature indicates that active contraction of the cranial vena cava wall oc

Novel cytochrome P450 3A5 (CYP3A5) cDNA in tree shrews (which are non-rodent primate-like species) and pig CYP3A227 cDNA were identified, along with known pig CYP3A22, CYP3A29, and CYP3A46 cDNAs. All five cDNAs contained open reading frames encoding a polypeptide of 503 amino acids that shared high sequence identity (72-78 %) with human CYP3A4 and were more closely related to human CYP3As than rat CYP3As by phylogenetic analysis. CYP3A5 was the only CYP3A in the tree shrew genome, but pig CYP3A genes formed a CYP3A gene cluster in the genomic region corresponding to that of human CYP3A genes.

INTRODUCTION: There have recently been several clinical studies suggesting that brief periods of exposure to red light (repeated low-level red light, 'RLRL') may produce a dramatic anti-myopia effect, calling for further investigations into its therapeutic parameters. Unfortunately, many experimental species used in refractive studies develop myopia in response to this wavelength. Tree shrews are the only animal model other than rhesus monkeys that consistently exhibit hyperopic responses to ambient red light. Here, tree shrews were used to study the influence of the spectral purity, duty cycl

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Bartonella spp. are Gram-negative zoonotic bacteria that are transmitted to humans by several types of animal hosts, including rodents. Several studies have been conducted on the prevalence of Bartonella infections in rodents. However, the risk of rodent-associated Bartonella spp. infection in humans remains unclear. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and genetic heterogeneity of Bartonella spp. in rodents and shrews from nine provinces of Thailand using culture and molecular techniques.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 860 blood samples from rodents and shrews a

This study examined the fine structures of epididymal spermatozoa on the lesser white-toothed shrew (Crocidura suaveolens), the Japanese white-toothed shrew (C. dsinezumi) and the big white-toothed shrew (C. lasiura) belonging to the subfamily Crocidurinae living in Korea. In the spermatozoa of C. suaveolens, the head has a large acrosome, a smooth inner acrosomal membrane and a wavy, finger-like, electron-dense apical body. The neck has a solid proximal centriole that is filled with electron-dense material. These results showed the spermatozoa of C. suaveolens possess the characteristics of b

RATIONALE: The fatty acid amide oleoyl glycine (OlGly) and its more stable methylated form oleoyl alanine (OlAla) reduce naloxone-precipitated morphine withdrawal (MWD)-induced conditioned gaping (nausea) responses in rats. In addition, OlGly has been shown to reduce lithium chloride (LiCl)-induced conditioned gaping in rats and vomiting in Suncus murinus (house musk shrews).
OBJECTIVES: Here, we compared the potential of these fatty acid amides to maintain their anti-nausea/anti-emetic effect over a delay. The following experiments examined the potential of a wider dose range of OlGly and Ol

The progressively increased motivation for cocaine during abstinence is closely associated with the dysfunction of dopamine (DA) system. As DA receptors also dynamically regulate L-type calcium channels (LTCCs), in this study we examined how DA receptors (D1R or D2R) and LTCCs (Cav 1.2 or Cav 1.3) exert their influences on cocaine-seeking in a tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri chinensis) model. First, we demonstrated the 'incubation' effect by showing tree shrews exhibited a significantly higher seeking behaviour on withdrawal day (WD) 45 than on WD1. Then, we confirmed that longer abstinence perio

BACKGROUND: The comparisons of molecular characterization and antibiotic resistance of Klebsiella pneumoniae (KP) isolates from humans and other animal hosts are not well studied. Our goal was to compare the molecular epidemiology of KP strains that were isolated from urban rodents, shrews, and healthy people.
RESULTS: K. pneumoniae (KP) isolates were isolated from fecal samples of rodents, shrews and healthy adults in 2015 in southern China. In total, 465 fecal samples were collected, of which 85 from rodents, 105 from shrews, and 275 from healthy adults. Antimicrobial susceptibility and pro

While the tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri chinensis) is an excellent animal model for studying the mechanisms of human diseases, but few studies examine interleukin-2 (IL-2), an important immune factor in disease model evaluation. In this study, a 465 bp of the full-length IL-2 cDNA encoding sequence was cloned from the RNA of tree shrew spleen lymphocytes, which were then cultivated and stimulated with ConA (concanavalin). Clustal W 2.0 was used to compare and analyze the sequence and molecular characteristics, and establish the similarity of the overall structure of IL-2 between tree shrews and

Five mycoplasma strains isolated from house musk shrews (Suncus murinus) in the Central Institute for Experimental Animals were characterized and compared with three murine mycoplasma strains, Mycoplasma pulmonis m 53, M. arthritidis PG6, and M. neurolyticum Type A, and with reference strain G3-5 previously isolated from a house musk shrew. These isolates fermented glucose, but did not hydrolyze urea and arginine, passed through membrane filters of 450 nm pore size, were sensitive to digitonin, and formed minute (115 to 231 microns in diameter) colonies on agar medium. All the five unclassifie

The central cholinergic system regulates diverse neurological functions, learning, attention, arousal, sleep, emotion regulation and behavior control. As a close evolutionary relative of primates, the tree shrew is a valuable comparative model for neurobiological investigation. However, the anatomical distribution of choline acetyltransferase-immunoreactive (ChAT-ir) neurons in its brain remains poorly characterized. Using ChAT immunofluorescence, we systematically mapped the whole-brain distribution and morphology of ChAT-ir neurons in the tree shrew and compared them with those in the mouse.

Coronaviruses infect a wide range of animal and human hosts. Some human coronaviruses, such as SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and SARS-CoV-2, originated in animals, with bats often serving as ancestral hosts. This study analyzed samples from wild animals in three Mexican states, using an RT-PCR assay targeting the RdRp gene to detect and genotype coronaviruses, assessing their potential role as reservoirs. Phylogenetic analysis was conducted to determine the genetic relationships of the identified coronaviruses. Gammacoronavirus RNA was identified in fallow deer, llamas, spider monkeys, and mouflons; Bet

Viral infection is a global public health threat causing millions of deaths. A suitable small animal model is essential for viral pathogenesis and host response studies that could be used in antiviral and vaccine development. The tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri or Tupaia belangeri chinenesis), a squirrel-like non-primate small mammal in the Tupaiidae family, has been reported to be susceptible to important human viral pathogens, including hepatitis viruses (e.g., HBV, HCV), respiratory viruses (influenza viruses, SARS-CoV-2, human adenovirus B), arboviruses (Zika virus and dengue virus), and othe

OBJECTIVE: House musk shrew (Suncus murinus), a small experimental animal with low body fat, may be a possible model for human lipodystrophy. Leptin is an adipocyte-derived hormone thought to have an important role in the pathophysiology of lipodystrophy. The objectives of this study were to clarify the structure and distribution of suncus leptin.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: To determine the primary structure of suncus leptin, we cloned the suncus Lep cDNA using the rapid amplification of cDNA ends method. The obtained amino acid (aa) sequence was compared with other mammals and the protein struct

Identifying key reservoirs for zoonoses is crucial for understanding variation in incidence. Plague re-emerged in Mahajanga, Madagascar in the 1990s but there has been no confirmed case since 1999. Here we combine ecological and genetic data, from during and after the epidemics, with experimental infections to examine the role of the shrew Suncus murinus in the plague epidemiological cycle. The predominance of S. murinus captures during the epidemics, their carriage of the flea vector and their infection with Yersinia pestis suggest they played an important role in the maintenance and transmis
