OBJECTIVE: We present an extremely rare case of a 44-year-old woman with right gustatory otorrhoea and otalgia.
CASE REPORT: The patient had been initially treated for otitis externa after Pseudomonas aeruginosa was grown from a microbiological swab. Sialodochitis fibrinosa is a rare disease characterized by paroxysmal swelling of the salivary glands and discharge of fibrous masses containing eosinophils from the salivary gland orifice. Chronic drooling is a major problem in patients with cerebral palsy and other neurological dysfunctions. Various treatments, ranging from speech therapy to radical surgery, have been used to overcome this distressing problem, with surgery the most consistently successful. A case of bilateral recurrent submandibular sialadenitis is presented in a patient with decreased salivary flow. The condition was caused by trapping of the submandibular papillae between the lingual flange of the denture and the enlarged genial tubercles. Removal of these causes led to resolution of her symptoms. The value of plain radiography, sialography and scintigraphy is discussed.

A retrospective study of 6 cases of Stafne's static cavities is presented in a review of 1536 cases of maxillary cysts. We have found an incidence 4:2 for men. All cases have been detected casually. The sialography show a relationship between cavities and the submaxillary gland. The treatment was surgical in four cases and conservative in two.

An unusual case of posterior lingual mandibular bone depression in a 39-year-old Japanese man is reported. The bilocular type of this condition was composed of 2 large ovoid radiolucent areas which were adjacent to each other. The diagnosis of this condition was made by sialography and tomography. Sonography and computed tomography play complementary roles in imaging mass lesions in the salivary glands and their surroundings. Ninety per cent of parotid tumors originate from the superficial lobe, and we consider sonography to be the method of choice for imaging these lesions. The sensitivity of high-resolution sonography in detecting intraparotid tumors approaches 100 per cent, and ultrasound is therefore an excellent method to evaluate patients with parotid swelling. CT of the salivary glands can produce clinically significant information that may help in the selection of appropriate therapy. It is the method of choice for the examination of mass lesions in and about the salivary glands. The role of CT for the evaluation of calculi and other obstructions and sialectasis is not yet determined. Conventional sialography may still be the method of choice for these entities.

The tumor within the carotid sheath described in this article is unusual in that its clinical presentation mimicked a deep-lobe parotid tumor. Despite extensive investigation with conventional sialography, technetium pertechnetate scintigraphy, and computerized axial tomography, the correct preoperative diagnosis was not established.
