The First Study of Borrelia burgdorferi Sensu Lato Persistence in Small Mammals Captured in the Ixodes persulcatus Distribution Area in Western Siberia.

Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) persistence in reservoir hosts is essential for the maintenance of the spirochaetes in the enzootic cycle. In this study, we investigated the persistence of Siberian B. burgdorferi s.l. strains in naturally infected voles and their transmission to Ixodes ticks. A long-term study conducted in 2013-2024 demonstrated the presence of Borrelia afzelii, Borrelia bavariensis, and, rarely, "Candidatus Borrelia sibirica" DNA in blood samples of small mammals. Among these, B. bavariensis exhibited the highest genetic diversity. All identified Borrelia species persi

Genetic similarity of Puumala viruses found in Finland and western Siberia and of the mitochondrial DNA of their rodent hosts suggests a common evolutionary origin.

A total of 678 small mammals representing eight species were trapped in western Siberia in 1999-2000 and assayed for the presence of hantaviruses. Eighteen animals, all Clethrionomys species, were antigen positive by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Small and medium genome segments were recovered by RT-PCR from six samples from Clethrionomys glareolus and three from Clethrionomys rufocanus. Sequence comparison and phylogenetic analysis revealed that these hantaviruses were Puumala virus and were similar to hantavirus strains from Finland. To confirm these data, partial nucleotide seq

Polymorphism of Transforming Growth Factor TGFB and Its Receptors TGFBRI, TGFBRII, TGFBRIIII Genes in Western Siberia Patients with Open-Angle Glaucoma.

Polymorphism of genes of transforming growth factor TGFB and its receptors (TGFBRI, TGFBRII, and TGFBRIIII) in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma was analyzed. The frequency of the TGFBRII CC genotype in patients is increased relative to the control group (OR=6.10, p=0.0028). Heterozygosity in this polymorphic position is reduced (OR=0.18, p=0.0052). As the effects of TGF-β is mediated through its receptors, we analyzed complex of polymorphic variants of the studied loci in the genome of patients. Two protective complexes consisting only of receptor genes were identified: TGFBRI TT:TGFB

Food and water security issues in Russia III: food- and waterborne diseases in the Russian Arctic, Siberia and the Far East, 2000-2011.

BACKGROUND: The food- and waterborne disease situation in Russia requires special attention. Poor quality of centralized water supplies and sewage systems, biological and chemical contamination of drinking water, as well as contamination of food products, promote widespread infectious diseases, significantly exceeding nationwide rates in the population living in the two-thirds of Russian northern territories. OBJECTIVES: The general aim was to assess the levels of food- and waterborne diseases in selected regions of Russian Arctic, Siberia and the Far East (for the period 2000-2011), and to c

[Helminthiases among the population of northwestern Siberia. 1. Opisthorchiasis and mixed invasion in the native inhabitants of the Ob River basin and their clinical course].

The use of multifactor statistic analysis for screening population of the northern part of the Ob river basin for helminthiasis allowed the authors to reveal a significant feedback between manifested opisthorchiasis and other types of this disease course in both sexes. The main component analysis indicates that the tentatively control group of males is presented by adolescents (14-17 years old) who are likely to be infected with Opisthorchis without evidence of its clinical manifestations. The correlation analysis demonstrated also a direct relationship between the age and manifest opisthorchi

Infant and child diet in Neolithic hunter-fisher-gatherers from Cis-Baikal, Siberia: intra-long bone stable nitrogen and carbon isotope ratios.

Analysis of stable nitrogen and carbon isotopes (δ(15) N and δ(13) C) from subadults and adults allows for assessment of age-related dietary changes, including breastfeeding and weaning, and adoption of an adult diet. In one of the first studies of hunter-fisher-gatherer subadults from Eurasia, three Neolithic (8,800-5,200 calBP) mortuary sites from southwestern Siberia are analyzed to evaluate hypothesized differences in weaning age between Early versus Late Neolithic groups. An intra-individual sampling methodology is used to compare bone formed at different ages. Collagen samples (n = 143)

Metagenomic Approach Reveals the Second Subtype of PRRSV-1 in a Pathogen Spectrum during a Clinical Outbreak with High Mortality in Western Siberia, Russia.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) has a significant economic impact on pig farming worldwide by causing reproductive problems and affecting the respiratory systems of swine. In Eastern Europe, PRRSV-1 strains are characterized by high genetic variability, and pathogenicity differs among all known subtypes. This case study describes the detection of a wide pathogen spectrum, including the second subtype PRRSV-1, with a high mortality rate among nursery piglets (23.8%). This study was conducted at a farrow-to-finish farm in the Western Siberia region of Russia. Clinical

The c.644 G > A p.(Trp215*) founder variant in the CLIC5 gene causes progressive autosomal recessive deafness 103 (DFNB103) in Eastern Siberia.

Previously only two families were known with progressive autosomal recessive deafness 103 (DFNB103, OMIM616042) caused by pathogenic variants of the CLIC5 gene. In this study we present the novel truncating variant c.644 G > A p.(Trp215*) of this gene which was found in homozygous state among 22 patients with hearing loss (HL) from 16 unrelated families living in the Sakha Republic of Russia (Eastern Siberia). Genotype-phenotype analysis in patients with DFNB103 showed that HL was sensorineural, symmetrical and variable by severity (from moderate to profound). Audiograms mostly have a down cur

[Results of the VNTR-analysis in a locus (5'-NAAA-3')n of strains Yersinia pestis from the active natural foci of plague of Siberia].

The method of the VNTR-analysis in a locus (5'-NAAA-3')n was studied using samples of the DNA of 73 strains Y. pestis ssp. altaica, isolated in Gorno-Altaisk and 65 strains Y. pestis ssp. Pestis, allocated in Tuva natural foci of plague. It was demonstrated that strains from the Gorno-Altaisk population of plague microbes possessed genomic polymorphism in the locus given a marker that is reflected in variability of the size of an amplicon from 250 up to 275 bp, correlating with places of isolation of strains in separate epizootic loci. Strains Y. pestis ssp. pestis from the Tuva population, on
