Pathogenic microorganisms carried by migratory birds passing through the territory of the island of Ustica, Sicily (Italy).

Several studies have shown that migratory birds play an important role in the ecology, circulation and dissemination of pathogenic organisms. In October 2006, a health status evaluation was performed on a large population of migratory birds passing through the territory of Ustica (Italy), an island located on the migration route of many species of birds to Africa, and various laboratory tests were conducted. In total, 218 faecal swabs and the internal organs of 21 subjects found dead in nets were collected for bacteriological and virological examination, including avian influenza and Newcastle

The effects of anthropogenic particulate emissions on roadway dust and Nerium oleander leaves in Messina (Sicily, Italy).

Complementary studies on the inorganic chemical composition of Nerium oleander leaves collected in the town of Messina (Sicily, Italy) and seven grain-size fractions of local roadway dust have been carried out. Data and maps are presented to show that the particulate matter present in the air of Messina contains trace elements significantly in excess with respect to the average continental earth crust. The anomalies follow the outline of the urban area, the highest concentrations of trace elements being observed where traffic density is highest. Chemical and isotopic analyses of both road dust

Whatever the cost: Grain trade and the Genoese dominating minority in Sicily and Tabarka (16th-18th centuries).

This work analyses the activities of Genoese merchant communities in the grain trade in western Mediterranean markets. Our goal is to shed light on their ability to integrate into foreign lands, taking advantage of their privileged position within the Spanish Crown. Our analysis is focussed on two case studies, strictly connected from a theoretical point of view: Sicily and Tabarka. Both Genoese minorities living on these two islands used the port of Genoa as their commercial hub. Regarding Sicily, this study has mostly drawn information from a yet unexploited source: general average procedure

Health conditions of migrants landed in north-eastern Sicily and perception of health risks of the resident population.

OBJECTIVES: In Italy, a recent irregular movement of people raised concerns among the host population on possible introduction of diseases that have long been controlled in the host countries. This study evaluates the health conditions of illegal immigrants landed on the north-eastern Sicilian territory, to provide information on the clinical and epidemiologic burden of infectious diseases among migrants and how the local population feel about these landings. STUDY DESIGN: The study design is a cross-sectional study. METHODS: The study considered all migrants landed illegally in the city of

Incidence of pleural mesothelioma in a community exposed to fibres with fluoro-edenitic composition in Biancavilla (Sicily, Italy).

INTRODUCTION: Amphibolic fibres with fluoro-edenitic composition characterize Biancavilla soil, including the major quarry from which building materials have been extensively extracted. These fibres induce mesothelioma in experimental animals and their in vitro biological action is similar to that of crocidolite. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Malignant mesothelioma case series and incidence were examined to evaluate the disease burden on Biancavilla inhabitants. RESULTS: The incidence of pleural mesothelioma in Biancavilla is steadily higher than in the Sicilian Region, risk estimates are more elev

Increased annual frequency of Hashimoto's thyroiditis between years 1988 and 2007 at a cytological unit of Sicily.

Like other auto-immune diseases, Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) results from the interaction of genetic with environmental factors. Only few studies have evaluated the year-to-year change in frequency of HT over a wide period of time. The endocrine division of our Hospital has reported a great increase in the annual frequency of HT between 1975 and 2005, and a progressive decrease in both age at presentation and female to male (F/M) ratio starting in the mid-1990s. Between years 1988 and 2007, we have collected 8397 adequate examinations by fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) on 8397 persons

Adult acute upper respiratory tract infections in Sicily: pattern of antibiotic drug prescription in primary care.

We performed an observational study of the antibiotic-prescribing behaviour of Sicilian general practitioners (GPs) in managing acute upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs). Seventy-six GPs from 25 towns, representing a patient population of 96,630, participated in the study between September 1995 and May 1996. These physicians issued 2038 antibiotic treatment courses for acute upper respiratory tract infections: 792 for acute pharyngitis, 531 for acute tonsillitis, 304 for acute laryngitis and tracheitis, 268 for suppurative and non-suppurative acute otitis media, 124 for acute sinusitis

Next-Generation Sequencing Analysis for HIV-1 Genotyping and Drug Resistance Mutations Mapping in Sicily, Italy.

BACKGROUND: The advent and continuous improvement in antiretroviral therapy (ART) have profoundly altered the clinical course of HIV infection, shifting the focus from AIDS-related complications to the management of age-related comorbidities and non-AIDS-related hospitalizations. In this evolving context, optimizing ART is essential, with genotypic resistance testing (GRT), particularly through next-generation sequencing (NGS), playing a pivotal role. METHODS: This multicenter, retrospective cross-sectional study investigated HIV-1 subtypes, resistance mutations, and drug resistance profiles

Scrapie incidence and PRNP polymorphisms: rare small ruminant breeds of Sicily with TSE protecting genetic reservoirs.

BACKGROUND: Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE) are fatal neurodegenerative diseases of several mammalian species, including humans. In Italy, the active surveillance through rapid tests on brain stem from small ruminants started in 2002 on randomly selected samples of healthy slaughtered animals. Sampling number was proportionally related to the regional small ruminant population. Of the twenty Italian regions, Sicily has the second largest population of small ruminants which is mainly constituted by crossbreed animals (>70 %). Sicily contains also three native sheep breeds Pinzir

Prevalence of sexually transmitted infections and enteric protozoa among homosexual men in western Sicily (south Italy).

INTRODUCTION: In recent years an increase in the number of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in men who have sex with men (MSM) has been reported in different industrialised countries. Because few epidemiological data on the STls/MSM population in Sicily are available, a survey was conducted to assess the prevalence of STls/enteric protozoa and risky sexual behaviours among MSM in western Sicily. METHODS: In 2010, 74 MSM with median age of 30 years old, were recruited via networks. All participants to the study were interviewed by anonymous self-administered questionnaire in order to col

Human exposure to Dirofilaria immitis following a canine heartworm disease elimination program in Linosa Island (Sicily, Italy).

The recent reports of Dirofilaria immitis causing canine heartworm disease (HWD) in highly endemic foci of Italy suggested the increasing risk for dogs and humans. In southernmost areas, such as Linosa island (Sicily), previous studies showed D. immitis infection in 58.9 % of dogs and a parasitic exposure in 7.9 % of islanders. These findings prompted a targeted elimination program, which led to HWD elimination by 2022. Hence, the present study aimed to assessantibody response and kinetics among Linosa residents one year after the implementation of canine HWD elimination program. In 2023, bloo

Zoonotic Bacteria and Vector-Borne Protozoa in Troglophilus Bat Colonies in Sicily (Southern Italy): A Biomolecular Survey.

Bats, as members of the order Chiroptera, are vital to ecosystems and serve as reservoirs for numerous microorganisms, some of which can cause zoonotic diseases. Human interactions with bats are increasing due to habitat alterations, making it essential to understand their microbiota, particularly potential pathogens. This study aimed to evaluate the excretion of zoonotic bacteria and protozoa in insectivorous bats from four caves in the provinces of Ragusa, Catania, and Syracuse (Sicily, Southern Italy) using molecular biology tests for zoonotic agents, including Bartonella henselae, Borrelia
