Integrating health-related quality of life with sickness leave days for return-to-work assessment in traumatic limb injuries.

PURPOSE: A novel indicator called health-adjusted leave days (HALDs) is proposed. It integrates the opposite level of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) with the sick leave days (LDs) before return-to-work (RTW) to better measure the impact of injuries on occupational health. METHODS: A total of 1,167 limb injuries were consecutively recruited in a teaching hospital from January to December 2009. The number of LDs was calculated between the date of injury and the first episode of RTW. Each subject was repeatedly assessed with EuroQol instrument (EQ-5D) before RTW. The HRQoL index is defin

Self-perceived barriers to returning to work among employees with a low educational level on long-term sick leave: the "NOW WHAT" large-scale interview study.

OBJECTIVE: Because employees with low educational levels have the highest rates of sick leave, this study aimed to identify the self-perceived return-to-work barriers of employees with low educational levels on long-term sick leave. METHODS: Employees on long-term sick leave with primary/secondary educational attainment were included from the NOW WHAT large-scale interview study (n = 122). The World Health Organization's system of classifying functioning, disability, and health guided the deductive content analysis. RESULTS: 1,942 meaning units describing return-to-work barriers across all c

Does a specialized assessment improve vocational outcomes for people on sick leave with a suspected common mental disorder? Results from the Mental Health Assessment Study (MeHAS).

BACKGROUND: In Denmark, 50% of those on long-term sick leave are affected by common mental disorders (CMDs), and it has been argued that detection in primary care has been insufficient. The Mental Health Assessment Study (MeHAS) assesses if specialized mental health assessments can enhance return to work for this group. This study aimed to estimate the effect of a specialized mental health assessment for people on sick leave with a mental health disorder, on return to work and mental health care utilization. METHODS AND FINDINGS: In this experimental study, sickness absentees were referred fr

Acute reconstruction results in less sick-leave days and as such fewer indirect costs to the individual and society compared to delayed reconstruction for ACL injuries.

PURPOSE: To compare the total number of sick-leave days caused by the knee injury from the day of injury and over the first year between acute (within 8 days) and delayed (6-10 weeks) anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) and also assess other clinical outcomes during this period. METHODS: Seventy patients with an acute ACL injury and Tegner level of 6 or more were randomized to acute (within 8 days) or delayed (after 6-10 weeks) ACLR. Patient-reported outcomes; objective IKDC and manual stability measurements were assessed at 6 and 12 months. With data from the Swedish Social Insu

Impact of the treatment of chronic myeloid leukaemia by tyrosine-kinase inhibitors on sick leaves refund: a nationwide cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The advent of chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) tyrosine-kinase inhibitors (TKI) has led to new paradigms including occupational rehabilitation. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to characterize the impact of CML treatment on sick leaves within the 2 years following diagnosis in working-age patients. METHODS: A cohort of all 18-60-year-old newly diagnosed CML patients initiating a TKI between January 1st 2011 and December 31st 2014 in France was identified in the French National Healthcare database (Système National des Données de Santé [SNDS]). Patients with a sick leave identified in

The return to work after arthroplasty (REWARD) cohort: a nationwide longitudinal study of sick leave and disability pension among individuals receiving hip and knee arthroplasty in Sweden.

PURPOSE: The return to work after arthroplasty (REWARD) study was established to address knowledge gaps regarding factors influencing return to work and long-term workability following hip and knee arthroplasty. The study investigates how variables such as sex, occupational workload and prior treatments affect sick leave patterns across regions and healthcare providers in Sweden. By analysing trajectories of sick leave and disability pension before and after surgery, the study aims to identify determinants for successful return to work. PARTICIPANTS: Initially, we identified two separate coho

Adverse drug reactions following SARS-CoV-2 vaccination of 3805 healthcare workers cause substantial sick-leave and are correlated to vaccine regimen, age, sex and serological response.

BACKGROUND: Although SARS-CoV-2 vaccination was a critical component to mitigate impact of the pandemic, it also brought specific challenges related to adverse drug reactions (ADRs) when large cohorts of healthcare workers were vaccinated. METHODS AND FINDINGS: This study reports solicited ADRs and IgG anti-SARS-CoV-2 levels from 3805 healthcare workers in Sweden following primary immunization during 2021. Differences in systemic reactions at a level where study participants needed sick-leave or rescheduling of work shifts differed substantially between vaccine regimens, ranging from 12 % (Co

Factors associated with death, hospitalization, resignation, and sick leave from work among patients with schizophrenia in Japan: a nested case-control study using a large claims database.

BACKGROUND: Premature mortality, frequent relapse that easily leads to hospitalization, and discontinuous employment are key challenges for the treatment of schizophrenia. We evaluated risk factors for important clinical outcomes (death, hospitalization, resignation, and sick leave from work) in patients with schizophrenia in Japan. METHODS: A nested case-control study was conducted for patients with schizophrenia identified in a Japanese claims database. For each outcome, the case was matched with up to four controls of the same age, sex, index year, and enrollment status (employee or depend

Sustained improvements in sick leave, fatigue and functional status following a concentrated micro-choice based treatment for patients with long COVID: A 1 year prospective uncontrolled study.

BACKGROUND: Long COVID has affected approximately 200 million people globally, with substantial consequences for the individuals, healthcare systems and society. Treatment guidelines lack clear recommendations regarding increased activity. This study aimed to evaluate primary outcomes as patients' satisfaction, illness perception and patient activation. In addition, potential changes in functional levels, sick leave, fatigue, dyspnea, and exercise capacity from baseline to 12-month follow-up after a concentrated micro-choice-based intervention in patients with long COVID. METHODS: This prospe

Duration of sick leave after surgical repair of the ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint with K-wire immobilization: Prospective case series of 21 patients.

Surgical repair of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) of the thumb metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint after complete rupture is usually protected by cast immobilization, which hinders return to work. The goal of this study was to determine the duration of sick leave for patients who had 6 weeks of K-wire immobilization instead of cast immobilization after surgical repair of the UCL. This prospective, observational, non-comparative study included patients who had surgical repair of the UCL of the thumb MCP joint followed by K-wire immobilization. Manual laborers were excluded. Protocol for the effect evaluation of independent medical evaluation after six months sick leave: a randomized controlled trial of independent medical evaluation versus treatment as usual in Norway.

BACKGROUND: It has been discussed whether the relationship between a patient on sick leave and his/her general practitioner (GP) is too close, as this may hinder the GP's objective evaluation of need for sick leave. Independent medical evaluation involves an independent physician consulting the patient. This could lead to new perspectives on sick leave and how to follow-up the patient. METHODS/DESIGN: The current study is a randomized controlled trial in a Norwegian primary care context, involving an effect evaluation, a cost/benefit analysis, and a qualitative evaluation. Independent medical

Myofeedback training and intensive muscular strength training to decrease pain and improve work ability among female workers on long-term sick leave with neck pain: a randomized controlled trial.

UNLABELLED: The theoretical framework is that muscle tension in the neck is related to insufficient muscular rest and is a risk factor for chronic pain and reduced work ability. Promoting muscle strength and muscle rest may increase work ability and reduce neck pain. OBJECTIVES: To test whether myofeedback training or intensive strength training leads to decreased pain and increased work ability in women on long-term sick leave. METHODS: This is a randomized controlled trial of two 1-month interventions with myofeedback or muscular strength training in the home environment. Female human serv

A Web- and Mobile-Based Intervention for Comorbid, Recurrent Depression in Patients With Chronic Back Pain on Sick Leave (Get.Back): Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial on Feasibility, User Satisfaction, and Effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Chronic back pain (CBP) is linked to a higher prevalence and higher occurrence of major depressive disorder (MDD) and can lead to reduced quality of life. Unfortunately, individuals with both CBP and recurrent MDD are underidentified. Utilizing health care insurance data may provide a possibility to better identify this complex population. In addition, internet- and mobile-based interventions might enhance the availability of existing treatments and provide help to those highly burdened individuals. OBJECTIVE: This pilot randomized controlled trial investigated the feasibility of
