A Multimodal Approach to the Quantification of Kinetic Tremor in Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease results in motor impairment that deteriorates patients' quality of life. One of the symptoms negatively interfering with daily activities is kinetic tremor which should be measured to monitor the outcome of therapy. A new instrumented method of quantification of the kinetic tremor is proposed, based on the analysis of circles drawn on a digitizing tablet by a patient. The aim of this approach is to obtain a tremor scoring equivalent to that performed by trained clinicians. Models are trained with the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) method to predict

Mesh-based approach for the 3D analysis of anatomical structures of interest in radiotherapy.

In this paper a method based on mesh surfaces approximations for the 3D analysis of anatomical structures in Radiotherapy (RT) is presented. Parotid glands meshes constructed from Megavoltage CT (MVCT) images were studied in terms of volume, distance between center of mass (distCOM) of the right and left parotids, dice similarity coefficient (DICE), maximum distance between meshes (DMax) and the average symmetric distance (ASD). A comparison with the standard binary images approach was performed. While absence of significant differences in terms of volume, DistCOM and DICE indices suggests tha

RESP-24: a computer program for the investigation of 24-h breathing abnormalities in heart failure patients.

In this paper, we describe a computer program (RESP-24) specifically devised to assess the prevalence and characteristics of breathing disorders in ambulant chronic heart failure patients during the overall 24 h period. The system works on a single channel respiratory signal (RS) recorded through a Holter-like portable device. In the pre-processing stage RESP-24 removes noise, baseline drift and motion artefacts from the RS using a non-linear filter, enhances respiratory frequency components through high-pass filtering and derives an instantaneous tidal volume (ITV) signal. The core processing

C2-LSM: A Storm-NoC Based Neuromorphic Processor for High-Accuracy Liquid State Machine With Cube-Cluster Topology.

The liquid state machine (LSM), a reservoir computing variant of spiking neural networks (SNNs), has been widely adopted for its low training complexity. In this work, we propose C2-LSM, a neuromorphic processor designed through algorithm-hardware co-design to achieve high accuracy across diverse tasks. At the algorithm level, inspired by the "small-world" structure of the biological brain, we introduce a novel reservoir layer in which neurons are interconnected using a cube-cluster topology. For hardware implementation, the customized C2-LSM processor supports runtime configurability of reser

The role of eye movement signals in non-invasive brain-computer interface typing system.

Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) have shown great potential in providing communication and control for individuals with severe motor disabilities. However, traditional BCIs that rely on electroencephalography (EEG) signals suffer from low information transfer rates and high variability across users. Recently, eye movement signals have emerged as a promising alternative due to their high accuracy and robustness. Eye movement signals are the electrical or mechanical signals generated by the movements and behaviors of the eyes, serving to denote the diverse forms of eye movements, such as fixatio

Arrhythmia detection by the graph convolution network and a proposed structure for communication between cardiac leads.

One of the most common causes of death worldwide is heart disease, including arrhythmia. Today, sciences such as artificial intelligence and medical statistics are looking for methods and models for correct and automatic diagnosis of cardiac arrhythmia. In pursuit of increasing the accuracy of automated methods, many studies have been conducted. However, in none of the previous articles, the relationship and structure between the heart leads have not been included in the model. It seems that the structure of ECG data can help develop the accuracy of arrhythmia detection. Therefore, in this stu

A CNN and Transformer Hybrid Network for Multi-Class Arrhythmia Detection from Photoplethysmography.

Photoplethysmography (PPG)-based arrhythmia detection methods have gained attention with wearable technology, enabling early detection of undiagnosed arrhythmias. Existing methods excel in single arrhythmia detection but struggle with multiple arrhythmias due to challenges in extracting discriminative features from PPG signals. This study introduces a hybrid convolutional neural network (CNN)-transformer network for multiple arrhythmia detection from PPG signals. The model incorporates convolutional operations and self-attention mechanisms to capture both local features and global temporal dep

NCCT-CECT image synthesizers and their application to pulmonary vessel segmentation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Non-contrast CT (NCCT) and contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) are important diagnostic tools with distinct features and applications for chest diseases. We developed two synthesizers for the mutual synthesis of NCCT and CECT and evaluated their applications. METHODS: Two synthesizers (S1 and S2) were proposed based on a generative adversarial network. S1 generated synthetic CECT (SynCECT) from NCCT and S2 generated synthetic NCCT (SynNCCT) from CECT. A new training procedure for synthesizers was proposed. Initially, the synthesizers were pretrained using self-supervised le

A Data Driven End-to-End Approach for In-the-Wild Monitoring of Eating Behavior Using Smartwatches.

The increased worldwide prevalence of obesity has sparked the interest of the scientific community towards tools that objectively and automatically monitor eating behavior. Despite the study of obesity being in the spotlight, such tools can also be used to study eating disorders (e.g. anorexia nervosa) or provide a personalized monitoring platform for patients or athletes. This paper presents a complete framework towards the automated i) modeling of in-meal eating behavior and ii) temporal localization of meals, from raw inertial data collected in-the-wild using commercially available smartwat

A novel EMG-driven neuromuscular context encoding framework for real-time exoskeleton reference trajectory generation.

Accurate intention-aware joint angle trajectory prediction from surface electromyography (sEMG) is central to responsive lower-limb exoskeleton reference trajectory generation, particularly under subject and protocol variability. This paper proposes NCE-Net, a novel neuromuscular context encoding architecture for real-time EMG-driven exoskeleton reference trajectory generation. NCE-Net incorporates channel-adaptive neuromuscular encoding to address nonuniform muscle relevance, temporal context aggregation to exploit short-horizon EMG activation history, and CDGE-guided learning to improve refe

Generative recurrence analysis and metric learning for detection of atrial fibrillation from short ECG data.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals exhibit complex, nonlinear, and nonstationary dynamics that are not fully captured by conventional time series analysis methods. In this study, we propose a novel framework for atrial fibrillation (AF) detection that integrates a beat-level recurrence representation with supervised metric learning. ECG recordings are first segmented into beat-centered waveforms that serve as effective dynamical states, avoiding the inaccurate estimation of time delay and embedding dimension from short recordings. Rather than constructing conventional recurrence plots from delay-

Interpolation and Imputation Strategies for Missing Segments in Continuous Pressure-Flow Cerebral Bio-Signals: A Systematic Scoping Review.

Objective: Continuous pressure-flow cerebral bio-signals are critical for monitoring cerebrovascular dynamics but are often disrupted by missing data segments caused by artifacts from a variety of sources. These missing segments refer to segments of the signal that do not contain any valid physiological data. Such interruptions fragment the signals, resulting in discontinuities that compromise their overall integrity. Therefore, reconstructing missing values and preserving signal continuity are essential for ensuring the stable computation of signal trajectories and the accuracy of derived cer

The effect of data preprocessing on spike correlation analysis results.

In recent years, an increasing number of large electrophysiological data sets have become publicly available, thereby providing researchers with the opportunity to analyze spike train data without conducting their own experiments. While this is undoubtedly a positive development, it increases the need for proper documentation on how the data were collected and what preprocessing was performed on the data, since interpreting analysis results in ignorance of these pieces of information can lead to wrong conclusions. An important preprocessing step is the removal of artifacts from the recordings.

DPPAT: Dual-Level Periodic Pattern-Aware Transformer for Heart Sound Murmur Identification.

Developing heart sound classification algorithms for murmur identification is critical for early screening of heart diseases. However, identifying murmurs in long-duration heart sound signals can be challenging due to their weak features and interference from noise. Considering the periodic patterns of heart sounds and murmurs, periodic priors can be introduced to enhance murmur identification, an approach that remains underutilized in current methods. In this study, we propose a novel Dual-level Periodic Pattern-Aware Transformer (DPPAT) to implicitly leverage the periodic priors of heart sou

Automated early preterm detection using hybrid multimodal attention network with gated fusion.

Preterm birth is a major pregnancy complication associated with increased maternal and neonatal risks, making early detection of labor essential. Electrohysterography (EHG), provides a non-invasive approach for monitoring uterine dynamics. However, global synchronization patterns and propagation dynamics remain insufficiently understood, and many existing methods rely on manual annotation, limiting clinical applicability. This study evaluates synchronization-driven propagation patterns in multi-electrode EHG signals and proposes an automated framework for early preterm detection, beyond the co

cAPM: Continual AI-assisted pace-mapping with active learning.

Ventricular tachycardia (VT) is a life-threatening rhythm disorder and a major cause of sudden cardiac death. Pace-mapping is a standard clinical procedure for identifying the intervention target during catheter ablation of VT. It requires the clinicians to pace different sites in ventricles and rapidly interpret the resulting electrocardiograms (ECGs) to determine where to pace next or whether a target site has been identified. Active learning-based AI models have been proposed to guide clinicians to the next pacing site, showing promise in reducing the number of pacing sites and improving th
