BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The experimental model of pleurodesis in rabbits has been useful in understanding the pathophysiology of the pleural inflammatory injury induced by several sclerosing agents. However, restrictions on the use of rabbits in laboratory investigation are making this model less accessible. Silver nitrate solution has been used since the 1880s for newborn prophylaxis against Neisseria gonorrhoeae ocular infections. Recommendations by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control state that erythromycin and tetracycline ophthalmic products may serve as alternatives to silver nitrate solution. Silver-based dressings have been used extensively in wound management in recent years, but data on their antimicrobial activity in the clinical setting are limited. In order to explore their effects on chronic leg ulcer flora, 14 ulcers were cultured after at least 3 weeks treatment with Aquacel Ag(®) or Acticoat(®). The anti-inflammatory activity of nanocrystalline silver was examined using a porcine model of contact dermatitis. Inflammation was induced with dinitrochlorobenzene and then treated daily with nanocrystalline silver dressings, 0.5% silver nitrate, or saline. One hundred clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were checked for their sensitivity towards silver nitrate. The substitution of lead nitrate for uranium nitrate as used in the Steiner silver impregnation method for demonstrating spirochetes in tissue sections is described. The use of lead nitrate provides a chemical substitute free of any potential radiation hazard without loss of staining specificity. The endothelial damage caused by X-ray contrast media is tested on "en face preparations" of the rat aorta after silver staining.
