Group singing through the lens of polyvagal theory: A pilot study in patients with Parkinson's disease.

There is a need to counteract the chronic progression of Parkinson's disease (PD). This complex challenge requires new theoretical frameworks and practical strategies. In this study, we implemented group singing in line with the Singing Hospitals format and examined it through the lens of Polyvagal Theory to evaluate its potential benefits for people with PD. According to Polyvagal Theory, facilitating a shift in autonomic states from defense to safety and social engagement may enhance physiological regulation and thereby promote well-being across physical, mental, emotional, and social dimens

Protective Factors for Vocal Health in Teachers: The Role of Singing, Voice Training, and Self-Efficacy.

Voice disorders occur frequently in schoolteachers. The aim of the present cross-sectional study involving 124 German teachers was to investigate whether singing, voice training, and high self-efficacy are protective factors for vocal health. Furthermore, vocal self-concept was examined as a potential mediator explaining this relationship. Participants were assigned to the cases group if they had a clinically significant finding in voice examinations consisting of video laryngoscopy (VLS), auditory assessment (RBH), and the Voice Handicap Index (VHI) were assigned to the cases group. Exploration of Hypolipidemic Effects of Sterols from Pleurotus tuber-regium(Fr.) Sing Sclerotium.

The extraction technology of sterol was confirmed by ethanol reflux and saponification in this study. The orthogonal test was employed to assess the impact of extraction time, solid-liquid ratio, ethanol concentration and extraction temperature on the yield of sterol extraction. Hyperlipidemia model mice were established by feeding a high-fat and -sugar diet, and different doses of sterol extracts were given to the mice by gavages. The optimal extraction conditions were identified as an extraction time of 80 min, a solid-liquid ratio of 1:10, an ethanol concentration of 95%, and an extraction

Bioaccumulation and physiological changes in the fruiting body of Agaricus bisporus (Large) sing in response to cadmium.

The bioremediation of heavy metals contaminated soils with macrofungi is a new and promising approach; hence Agaricus bisporus (Large) sing has potentially shown accumulating ability to Cd contamination. This study focused on the tolerance response by A. bisporus to different contents of Cd in the closed cup and the flat stage of fruiting body development. The contents of Cd, soluble protein, sugar, low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs), and antioxidant activity were investigated. The bioaccumulation factor and transfer factor results revealed that Cd accumulated in the cap of A. bisporu

Singing for Lung Health: a qualitative assessment of a British Lung Foundation programme for group leaders.

INTRODUCTION: Singing for Lung Health (SLH) groups are an increasingly popular intervention for people with respiratory disease. There are limited data as to how these groups should be developed and run. We aimed to evaluate the experience of singing leaders both to assess the training provided by the British Lung Foundation (BLF) and to provide information to guide future development of programmes. METHODS: A convenience sample of 15 leaders who had received BLF SLH training participated in the BLF service evaluation. Fifteen singing groups were observed, and singing leader interviews and qu

Stereotyped and non-stereotyped features of the temporal patterning of singing sessions in the ovenbird Seiurus auricapillus.

Temporal patterning of recorded singing sessions of 26 different male ovenbirds Seiurus auricapillus (Fringillidae: Parulini) was analyzed computationally, in order to test whether differences among songs are potentially informative or merely reflect performance errors. Repeated songs within a singing session by a given male showed relatively little inter-individual variation in the duration of the song or in the number of units composing it, although these features varied substantially among individuals. On the other hand, within a session of singing by an individual male, the most variable a

Why we sing the blues: the relation between self-reflective rumination, mood, and creativity.

Past research has shown that creative behavior is associated with a higher risk for depression. The authors hypothesized that a 3rd underlying factor, namely, self-reflective rumination, may explain the connection. This hypothesis was examined in a sample of 99 undergraduate college students, using path analysis. The authors found that self-reported past depressive symptomatology was linked to increased self-reflective rumination. Rumination, in turn, was related to current symptomatology and to self-rated creative interests and objectively measured creative fluency, originality, and elaborati

Influence of caregiver singing and background music on posture, movement, and sensory awareness in dementia care.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Previous research suggested caregiver singing could influence persons with severe dementia to communicate with increased competence, to cease aggression, and to cease disruptive screaming, while at the same time they seemed to understand what was going on when being cared for during morning care sessions. The aim of this study was to illuminate the posture, body movements, and sensory awareness of patients with dementia during three types of morning care sessions with professional caregivers: (a) the usual morning care situation, (b) a caring session in which familiar backg

Evaluative and emotional routes to audience intention in musical-theater singing: An integrated response architecture.

Audience responses to vocal performances involve complex psychological processes beyond general aesthetic liking. However, less is known about how vocal appraisal, perceived emotional meaning, and future engagement intention are related. This study examined how technical-expressive perception (TEP), emotional perception (EP), and audience intention (AI) are related in responses to musical-theater singing. We used a single-wave survey of 306 adult musical-theater listeners in China to test their associations and compare them across attendance-frequency groups. Technical-expressive perception wa

Leptin promotes social context-specific increase in advertisement song effort of male Alston's singing mice.

Animal display behaviors, such as advertisement songs, are flashy and attention grabbing by necessity. In order to balance the costs and benefits of such signals, individuals must be able to assess both their own energetic state and their social environment. In this study, we investigated the role of leptin, a hormonal signal of high energy balance, in regulating the vocal advertisement display of Alston's singing mouse (Scotinomys teguina). To ask how internal cues of energy availability are integrated with external social cues, we manipulated perception of energy balance using exogenous lept

Emotional expressivity in singing. Assessing physiological and acoustic indicators of two opera singers' voice characteristics.

In an earlier study, we analyzed how audio signals obtained from three professional opera singers varied when they sang one octave wide eight-tone scales in ten different emotional colors. The results showed systematic variations in voice source and long-term-average spectrum (LTAS) parameters associated with major emotion "families". For two of the singers, subglottal pressure (PSub) also was recorded, thus allowing analysis of an additional main physiological voice control parameter, glottal resistance (defined as the ratio between PSub and glottal flow), and related to glottal adduction. Measuring Voice Effects of Vibrato-Free and Ingressive Singing: A Study of Phonation Threshold Pressures.

BACKGROUND: Phonation threshold pressure (PTP), showing the lowest subglottal pressure producing vocal fold vibration, has been found useful for documenting various effects of phonatory conditions. The need for such documentation is relevant also to the teaching of singing, particularly in view of vocal demands raised in some contemporary as well as early music compositions. The aim of the present study was to test the usefulness of PTP measurement for evaluating phonatory effects of vibrato-free and ingressive singing in professional singers. METHODS: PTP was measured at a middle, a high and

Non-contact measurement of facial surface vibration patterns during singing by scanning laser Doppler vibrometer.

This paper presents a method of measuring the vibration patterns on facial surfaces by using a scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV). The surfaces of the face, neck, and body vibrate during phonation and, according to Titze (2001), these vibrations occur when aerodynamic energy is efficiently converted into acoustic energy at the glottis. A vocalist's vibration velocity patterns may therefore indicate his or her phonatory status or singing skills. LDVs enable laser-based non-contact measurement of the vibration velocity and displacement of a certain point on a vibrating object, and scanning

Passive acoustic tracking of singing humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) on a northwest Atlantic feeding ground.

Passive acoustic tracking provides an unobtrusive method of studying the movement of sound-producing animals in the marine environment where traditional tracking methods may be costly or infeasible. We used passive acoustic tracking to characterize the fine-scale movements of singing humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) on a northwest Atlantic feeding ground. Male humpback whales produce complex songs, a phenomenon that is well documented in tropical regions during the winter breeding season, but also occurs at higher latitudes during other times of year. Acoustic recordings were made thro

[Vocal effectiveness in speech and singing: acoustical, physiological and perceptive aspects. applications in speech therapy].

OBJECTIVE: What is vocal effectiveness in lyrical singing in comparison to speech? Our study tries to answer this question, using vocal efficiency and spectral vocal effectiveness. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Vocal efficiency was mesured for a trained and untrained subject. RESULTS: According to these invasive measures, it appears that the trained singer uses her larynx less efficiently. Efficiency of the larynx in terms of energy then appears to be secondary to the desired voice quality. The acoustic measures of spectral vocal effectiveness of vowels and sentences, spoken and sung by 23 singers,

Two-dimensional model of vocal fold vibration for sound synthesis of voice and soprano singing.

Voiced sounds were simulated with a computer model of the vocal fold composed of a single mass vibrating both parallel and perpendicular to the airflow. Similarities with the two-mass model are found in the amplitudes of the glottal area and the glottal volume flow velocity, the variation in the volume flow waveform with the vocal tract shape, and the dependence of the oscillation amplitude upon the average opening area of the glottis, among other similar features. A few dissimilarities are also found in the more symmetric glottal and volume flow waveforms in the rising and falling phases. The

Singing-related neural activity in a dorsal forebrain-basal ganglia circuit of adult zebra finches.

The anterior forebrain pathway (AFP) of songbirds, a specialized dorsal forebrain-basal ganglia circuit, is crucial for song learning but has a less clear function in adults. We report here that neurons in two nuclei of the AFP, the lateral magnocellular nucleus of the anterior neostriatum (LMAN) and Area X, show marked changes in neurophysiological activity before and during singing in adult zebra finches. The presence of modulation before song output suggests that singing-related AFP activity originates, at least in part, in motor control nuclei. Some neurons in LMAN of awake birds also resp
