Prevalence of ADHD symptoms in patients with congenital heart disease.

OBJECTIVE: The presence of attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in children with congenital heart disease (CHD) was investigated. METHODS: Swanson, Nolan and Pelham teacher and parent rating scales, version 4 (SNAP-IV), commonly used for assessing symptoms of ADHD, were completed by parents and counselors of children who attended a CHD summer camp. Mean scores (n = 51) were compared with two comparison groups without CHD: patients with ADHD (n = 75) and patients without ADHD (n = 41). Parent scores were also compared to previously published parent normative data. RESULTS:

A not-so-grim tale: how childhood family structure influences reproductive and risk-taking outcomes in a historical U.S. Population.

Childhood family structure has been shown to play an important role in shaping a child's life course development, especially in industrialised societies. One hypothesis which could explain such findings is that parental investment is likely to be diluted in families without both natural parents. Most empirical studies have examined the influence of only one type of family disruption or composition (e.g. father absence) making it difficult to simultaneously compare the effects of different kinds of family structure on children's future outcomes. Here we use a large, rich data source (n=16,207)

A cross-national comparison of the linkages between family structure histories and early adolescent substance use.

Family structure can influence adolescent health with cascading implications into adulthood. Life course theory emphasizes how this phenomenon is dynamic across time, contextualized in policy systems, and grounded in processes of selection and socialization. This study used data from the U.S. (National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 Child and Young Adults, n = 6,236) and U.K. (Millennium Cohort Study, n = 11,095) to examine associations between a single mother family structure between ages 0-14 and early adolescent substance use at age 14 across time and place, using inverse probability of

Single-dose and steady state pharmacokinetics of CSA and two main primary metabolites, AM1 and AM4n in patients with rheumatic/autoimmune diseases.

BACKGROUND: Cyclosporine A (CsA) is an immunomodulatory agent used in standard immunosuppressive regimens in solid organ transplantations as well as in the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus and psoriasis. Its immunosuppressive activity is primarily due to parent drug. However, following oral administration, absorption is incomplete and varies between individuals. Further, there is a dearth of pharmacokinetic data for CsA in autoimmune patients compared to transplant recipients. AIM: The goal of this study was to investigate the single-dose and

Feeding dysfunction in single ventricle patients with feeding disorder.

PURPOSE: To determine whether caregivers of children with single ventricle heart defects identified as having feeding disorder will report more frequent feeding dysfunction, or maladaptive mealtime behavior and/or interactions, when compared with reference populations. METHODS: As part of routine evaluation, parents of children evaluated at the Feeding, Swallowing, and Nutrition Center at the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin completed previously validated questionnaires to assess feeding dysfunction and parental stress. Parental responses for single ventricle patients were compared with all o

Pathways From Parental Substance Use to Child Internalizing and Externalizing Behaviors in a Child Protective Services Sample.

This study examines the role of mediation in the pathway from parental substance use to children developing child internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Using the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being II, a random half sample (i.e., split-half approach) of children aged 18 months to 17 years who remained in the home following a child welfare investigation (N = 1,633) was used to examine direct and mediated pathways from parental self-reported alcohol and drug use to, separately, parent report of child internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Four parallel mediators were exam

Remission of maternal depression and child symptoms among single mothers: a STAR*D-Child report.

OBJECTIVE: Offspring of depressed parents are at increased risk for depressive and other disorders. We recently found that when depressed mothers reached full remission over 3 months of treatment, a significant improvement in the children's disorders occurred. Since only a third of the mothers remitted, factors related to maternal remission rates, and thereby child outcomes, were important. This report examined the relationship of the presence of a father in the household to maternal depression remission and child outcomes. METHOD: Maternal depression was measured using the 17-item Hamilton R

Single parenthood and depression: A thorough review of current understanding.

BACKGROUND: Single parenthood is becoming increasingly common in today's society for various reasons such as divorce, the death of a spouse, or the choice of parenthood. Regrettably, there seems to be no significant concern among world leaders regarding depression arising from single parenting. AIM: This article aimed to explore the prevalence of depression in single parents, the factors contributing to it, and its effects on their physical and emotional well-being. Additionally, it aims to investigate the long-lasting effects of depression in single parents, effective therapeutic approaches

Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial of a child and parent mindfulness intervention for pediatric venipuncture.

Children commonly undergo painful needle procedures. Unmanaged procedural pain can have short- and long-term consequences, including longer procedure times, greater distress at future procedures, and vaccine hesitancy. While parent behaviors are one of the strongest predictors of children's response to acute pain, pediatric procedural pain management interventions focus almost exclusively on the child. Further, existing parent-involved pediatric pain management interventions typically fail to improve child self-reported pain during painful procedures. The current protocol offers the first rand

Evaluating clinically significant change in mother and child functioning: comparison of traditional and enhanced behavioral parent training.

The Strategies to Enhance Positive Parenting (STEPP) program, an enhanced behavioral parent training (BPT) intervention, was developed to improve engagement in and outcomes following treatment for single-mother families of school-age youth with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A previous randomized clinical trial of the STEPP program demonstrated that the intervention resulted in statistically significant improvements at the group-level in child oppositional behavior, various areas of child impairment, parental stress, and parenting behavior, relative to a wait-list control con

Treatment for Higher-Order Restricted Repetitive Behaviors (H-RRB) in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Restricted repetitive behaviors (RRB) are one of the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Evidence suggests that higher-order RRB (H-RRB) are particularly challenging and can negatively impact family functioning (e.g., insistence on sameness, following idiosyncratic routines). The study examined the effects of a parent-implemented behavior intervention using a multiple baseline single case experimental design in three young children with ASD. The intervention involved self-management procedures and included principles of pivotal response treatment during which parents provided bids

Accuracy of brief and full forms of the Child Mania Rating Scale.

This study assesses the sensitivity of full and brief forms of a parent-rated mania scale to variations in diagnoses. Parents of a sample of 150 subjects either diagnosed with bipolar disorder (BD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or healthy controls (HC), completed the full Child Mania Rating Scale and other measures. We used single-parameter item-response theory models to produce a brief parent mania rating scale from the full version. The 10-item, brief Child Mania Rating Scale -- Parent (CMRS-P) version correlated .93 with 11 items from the full CMRS-P that were not used

Prolonged parent-child separation and pain in adolescence: The role of HPA-axis genetic variations.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence has demonstrated that childhood adversity was a predictor of pain and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis genetic variation is associated with pain risk. This study aims to explore possible effects of prolonged childhood separation from parents and HPA polygenic risk score (PRS) on pain among adolescents in rural China. METHOD: We used data from 219 adolescents in rural area of Fuyang city, Anhui province, China. Parent-child separation was collected through interview and pain intensity was reported using the 11-point Numerical Rating Scale. SNP genotypin

Associations between sleep, daytime sleepiness and functional outcomes in adolescents with ADHD.

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: Adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) experience greater difficulties in the domains of sleep, daytime sleepiness, and functioning compared to their peers. However, the relationship between these domains has not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to examine the relationship between sleep problems (including daytime sleepiness), ADHD severity, and functional outcomes (irritability, sluggish cognitive tempo, homework difficulties, and substance use) in a sample of adolescents with ADHD. PATIENTS/METHODS: Eighty-two adolescents (13-17 years)

Non-immune interaction of erythrophilic IgG fractions with human red blood cells.

Immunoglobulin G was separated on cellulose phosphate column to afford four distinct protein fractions (CP-I, II, III and IV). 125I-labeled fractions CP-III and CP-IV were found to be capable of binding specifically to normal human erythrocytes. The effect of the four fractions on osmotic resistance of red blood cells (RBC) was studied. RBC were obtained from eight patients with hereditary spherocytosis (HS), from a single parent of two non-related patients, and from five normal donors. RBC fragility of normal and one parent were unaffected by any of the immunoglobulin fractions. In contrast,

Monoclonal antibodies: technology and potential use.

The production of monoclonal antibodies through cell hybridization is a form of biotechnology that permits the dissection of complex antibody responses into their individual components. The procedure makes use of simple cell fusion techniques and standard in vitro tissue culture systems. The 2 essential biological components are immunized mice or rats and tumor cell lines of lymphoid origin called myelomas. Single antibody-forming cells from immunized rodents are fused with myeloma cells to create hybrid cells with properties of both parent cell types. The hybrids have an unlimited capacity to
