Quantifying Tinnitus Perception Improvement: Deriving the Minimal Clinically Important Difference of the Minimum Masking Level.

PURPOSE: Tools that can reliably measure changes in the perception of tinnitus following interventions are lacking. The minimum masking level, defined as the lowest level at which tinnitus is completely masked, is a candidate for quantifying changes in tinnitus perception. In this study, we aimed to determine minimal clinically important differences for minimum masking level. METHOD: A 3-month tinnitus intervention combining counseling and sound therapy was conducted in 74 participants with chronic tinnitus. Minimum masking levels were measured at baseline and 3 months. The clinical global im

Sensory deficits after a radial nerve injury.

BACKGROUND: The aim of our study was to objectively test sensibility on the dorsal side of the hand in patients with radial nerve injury, to document deficits and to detect if surgery for sensory reconstruction is needed. METHODS: Nineteen patients of mean age 31 ± 10 years were examined at a mean of 26.4 ± 27.8 months post radial nerve injury. Sensory mechanical thresholds on the dorsal surface of the hand were evaluated using Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments. Sensation was considered significantly impaired when there was no perception of a 2.0 gr. Semmes-Weinstein filament. Nociception was ev

[Relative scotoma rethought-Comparison between rapid campimetry and standard automated perimetry].

The visual field test of rapid campimetry offers a new perspective on relative scotomas. When passing through a relative scotoma at a speed of 6°/s, the bright test point flickers. With a reduced test dot size from GIII to GII and a reduced running speed of 0.75°/s, a rapid change from no light perception (absolute scotoma proportion 72%) to light perception (proportion 28%) is observed in the relative scotoma. The relative scotoma appears to consist of a juxtaposition of intact nerve fibers and multiple mini-Bjerrum scotomas.

Adapting the alcohol and alcohol problems perception questionnaire and the drug and drug problems perception questionnaire: A psychometric analysis of a person-centred approach.

BACKGROUND: The Alcohol and Alcohol Problems Perception Questionnaire and the Drug and Drug Problems Perception Questionnaires were developed decades ago to assess health care providers' attitudes toward patients who use substances. Although reliable, the language in these tools no longer aligns with contemporary societal and academic discourse on person-centred language. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate whether modifying the language in the Alcohol and Alcohol Problems Perception Questionnaire and Drug and Drug Problems Perception Questionnaire to create the person-centered Alcohol and

Right frontal HD-tDCS reveals causal involvement of time perception networks in temporal processing of concepts.

Evidence suggests that perceptual and action related features of concepts are grounded in the corresponding sensory-motor networks in the human brain. However, less is known about temporal features of event concepts (e.g., a lecture) and whether they are grounded in time perception networks. We examined this question by stimulating the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (rDLPFC)-a part of time perception network-using HD-tDCS and subsequently recording EEG while participants performed semantic and time perception tasks. Semantic tasks were composed of event noun duration judgment (EDur), obj

Pain perception in chronic knee osteoarthritis with varying levels of pain inhibitory control: an exploratory study.

Background and aims Pain is a disabling symptom in knee osteoarthritis (KOA) and its underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. Dysfunction of descending pain modulatory pathways and reduced pain inhibition enhance pain facilitation in many chronic pain syndromes but do not fully explain pain levels in chronic musculoskeletal conditions. The objective of this study is to explore the association of clinical variables with pain intensity perception in KOA individuals with varying levels of Conditioned Pain Modulation (CPM) response. Methods This is a cross-sectional, exploratory analysis us

The Dynamic Ebbinghaus: motion dynamics greatly enhance the classic contextual size illusion.

The Ebbinghaus illusion is a classic example of the influence of a contextual surround on the perceived size of an object. Here, we introduce a novel variant of this illusion called the Dynamic Ebbinghaus illusion in which the size and eccentricity of the surrounding inducers modulates dynamically over time. Under these conditions, the size of the central circle is perceived to change in opposition with the size of the inducers. Interestingly, this illusory effect is relatively weak when participants are fixating a stationary central target, less than half the magnitude of the classic static i

Immediate Effects of Thoracic Spine Thrust Manipulation on Neurodynamic Mobility.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the immediate effects of thoracic spine thrust manipulation (TSM) on the upper limb provocation test (ULPT) and seated slump test (SST) in individuals with identified neurodynamic mobility impairments. A secondary aim was to determine if correlation existed between the perception of effect and improvements in neurodynamic mobility following a thrust manipulation compared with mobilization. METHODS: A pretest-posttest experimental design randomized 48 adults into 2 groups: TSM or mobilization. Participants with identified neurodynamic mob

Growers versus showers: a meaningful (or useful) distinction?

Yafi et al. have conducted a study that will be of great interest to the lay community and also of import to practicing urologists who routinely encounter patients with concerns about the appearance of their phallus [1]. In one study 14% of men expressed dissatisfaction with their genitals with flaccid penile length being the most common source of dissatisfaction [2]. The concerns of such men tend to be the perception that their penis is small, or at least smaller than the penises of other men.

The concept of differential action of local anaesthetics on nerve fibers of different size is falsified by experiment. The temporal succession of alteration in perception is to be explained by changes at higher levels of integration.

Clinical determination of the corrected retinal image size in spectacle-corrected aphakes.

For individual spectacle-corrected aphakic patients, a method of estimating the size of the corrected retinal image corresponding to distant objects smaller than Snellen 6/360 (20/1200) is developed. Our results indicate that an estimate of the corrected retinal image size corresponding to a distant Snellen 6/12 (20/40) object in an individual spectacle-corrected aphake can be obtained to within plus or minus 1.0 micron of error using a multivariate regression model based on the measurement of six patient factors: axial length, anterior corneal power, spectacle lens back vertex power, lens thi

Perception of fluoroscopy last-image hold.

Last-image hold (LIH) is used in x-ray fluoroscopy systems as a convenience and dose savings feature. In the case of an image sequence, temporal filtering in the human visual system (HVS) reduces perceived noise. In the case of a constant, single image frame, this phenomenon is not present: the image looks noisier, and low-contrast objects disappear. Using low-contrast, stationary cylinder and disk phantoms in noise, perception of single frames are compared with that of conventional 30 acq/s continuous fluoroscopy (continuous). The dose of continuous is fixed at Q/acq, and the dose of single-f

Multi-modal Representation of the Size of Space in the Human Brain.

To estimate the size of an indoor space, we must analyze the visual boundaries that limit the spatial extent and acoustic cues from reflected interior surfaces. We used fMRI to examine how the brain processes the geometric size of indoor scenes when various types of sensory cues are presented individually or together. Specifically, we asked whether the size of space is represented in a modality-specific way or in an integrative way that combines multimodal cues. In a block-design study, images or sounds that depict small- and large-sized indoor spaces were presented. Visual stimuli were real-w

Understanding the associations and significance of fetal movements in overweight or obese pregnant women: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Presentation with decreased fetal movement (DFM) is associated with fetal growth restriction and stillbirth. Some studies report that DFM is frequent among overweight or obese mothers. We aimed to determine the significance and associations of fetal movements in women of increased body size. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA statement and the protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42016046352). Major databases were explored from inception to September 2017, using a predefined search strategy. We restricted inclusion to st

"I See What Others Don't See When They Look at Me": A Qualitative Study of Body Perception Disturbances in Chronic Non-Cancer Pain.

PURPOSE: Body perception disturbances, such as distorted perception of limb size, are well documented in specific pain conditions like complex regional pain syndrome but remain underexplored in chronic pain more broadly. This qualitative study aimed to explore how body perception disturbances manifest in individuals with chronic non-cancer pain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted on a purposive sample of 15 adults (4 men; age range: 26-76 years) with various chronic pain conditions (eg, fibromyalgia, musculoskeletal pain, migraine, endometriosis), pain severity (

Correlations between developmental test of visual perception-adolescent and adult and visual evoked potential in people with multiple sclerosis.

Background: Optic neuritis (ON) is a common visual sign in multiple sclerosis (MS). Although ON is recovered in most cases, other visual functions such as visual perception are affected and are not fully recovered. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between visual evoked potential (VEP) P100 and N70 latencies and visual perception using the Developmental Test of Visual Perception-Adolescent and Adult (DTVP-A) in people with MS. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 24 people with ON due to MS, aged 18-50 years old took part. In order to assess the visual perception and

Comparable magnitude of haptic size adaptation aftereffects between younger and older people.

Perceptual information is processed independently in each hemisphere at some processing stages. This hemispheric asymmetry is reported to decrease in older people, including for haptic sensation. It has been demonstrated that a prolonged bimanual touch with objects of specific sizes induces a perceptual adaptation aftereffect called haptic size adaptation aftereffect: adaptation to a large/small object in each hand alters the subsequent perceived size of tested objects on the hands as smaller/larger than their actual size. Given that the decrease in hemispheric asymmetry reflects an enhanced i

Effect of "inside-out" and "outside-in" attitude displays on off-axis tracking in pilots and nonpilots.

BACKGROUND: Pilots employing helmet-mounted displays spend sustained periods of time looking off-axis, necessitating the inclusion of attitude symbology on the helmet to maintain spatial awareness. We examined how fundamentally different attitude references, a moving-horizon ("inside-out") or a moving-aircraft ("outside-in"), affected pilot and nonpilot attitude control when looking on- or off-axis. Both a rear-view and a side-view outside-in perspective were depicted to investigate the effect of control-display compatibility. METHODS: Subjects performed a compensatory pitch-roll tracking tas
