The nature of bile alcohols and bile acids in gall-bladder and hepatic bile from perfused livers of the small skate (Raja erinacea) has been investigated. The main bile alcohol sulfate was isolated by thin-layer chromatography and analyzed by fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry and 13C NMR. Following solvolysis and purification on Lipidex-DEAP, the bile alcohol profile was measured by capillary gas-liquid chromatography-electron impact mass spectrometry. Based on these studies and on comparison with authentic scymmnol sulfate and scymnol, the main bile alcohol was identified as 5 beta-chol

Two morphologically disparate undescribed species of diphyllidean cestodes from the Yellowspotted skate, Leucoraja wallacei , from South Africa were included in a recent molecular phylogenetic study aimed at revising diphyllidean classification. From a molecular standpoint, these species were determined to be only distantly related to one another. One (originally referred to as Echinobothrium n. sp. 2) showed affinities with species of the batoid-parasitizing Echinobothrium sensu stricto and is described here as Echinobothrium marquesi n. sp. This species most closely resembles Echinobothrium

Durophagous predators consume hard-shelled prey such as bivalves, gastropods, and large crustaceans, typically by crushing the mineralized exoskeleton. This is costly from the point of view of the bite forces involved, handling times, and the stresses inflicted on the predator's skeleton. It is not uncommon for durophagous taxa to display an ontogenetic shift from softer to harder prey items, implying that it is relatively difficult for smaller animals to consume shelled prey. Batoid fishes (rays, skates, sawfishes, and guitarfishes) have independently evolved durophagy multiple times, despite

The electric organ of skates is a paired structure within the tail consisting of two longitudinal columns of electrocytes contained within the lateral musculature on each side of the vertebral column. The electrocytes develop from hypaxial skeletal muscle fibers, and, depending upon the species, are generally classified as either cup-shaped or disc-shaped. The disc-shaped electrocytes are considered to be the more derived type. Regardless of the morphology of the electrocyte, the electric organ discharge of all skates is characterized as a weak asynchronous and long-lasting signal. Although re

The reef manta ray (Mobula alfredi) is a highly mobile pelagic marine ray found throughout the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific, but investigation into their behavior and ecology within Papua New Guinea has not been previously undertaken. Furthermore, the home range, dispersal characteristics, and inter-seasonal fine-scale habitat use of this species is limited. To address these data gaps and investigate the vertical and horizontal habitat use of a previously unstudied population, SPLASH10-F-321A pop-off archival satellite tags were used to track ten adult individuals from 4

Neotropical freshwater stingrays of the subfamily Potamotrygoninae exhibit aplacental viviparity with uterine trophonemata. In this reproductive mode, females nourish and provide oxygenation to the embryo via the mucosa of the uterine wall. The aim of this study was to describe and histologically quantify the tissue components of the gravid uterus in an Amazonian freshwater stingray. Adult females of Potamotrygon wallacei were studied in different reproductive periods: resting stage, pregnant, and postpartum. During reproductive rest, the left ovary has numerous follicles compared to the right

Very little information is available in veterinary literature concerning chemical contraception in elasmobranchs. To decrease breeding and adverse reproductive behaviors, male Potamotrygon sp., housed in two zoologic institutions, were treated using methods used in other elasmobranchs. Four animals received deslorelin acetate implants (Suprelorin 4.7 mg and 9.4 mg), four animals received a gonadotropin-releasing hormone vaccine (Improvac 50-100 µg) twice separated by 1 mon, and two animals were not treated to serve as controls. Health checks, including blood sampling, coelomic ultrasound, and

BACKGROUND: Acute Appendicitis is a clinical diagnosis with atypical presentation in young, elderly, females, genitourinary and gynecological conditions. Delayed appendectomy increases the risk of appendicular perforation, sepsis morbidity and mortality. Literature reports as high as 20-40% negative appendectomy. Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha score has come with higher sensitivity and diagnostic accuracy than Alvarado score in Asian population. This study aims to compare RIPASA and Alvarado score for diagnostic accuracy.
METHODS: Appendectomy patients at Patan Hospital from April to Septem

The ontogeny of the northwestern Atlantic batoid, Leucoraja ocellata, is described with special focus on the development of skate specific morphologies and the development of the fins. The results show that the sequence of events involving the early outgrowth of the paired fins and the initial development of the pharyngeal region is remarkably constant in skates, holocephalians, and sharks. However, differences exist in timing of the reshaping of the mandibular arch region, development of branchial filaments, median fins, denticles, and the order of branchial cleft formation. Despite the simil

The mechanotactile hypothesis proposes that ventral non-pored lateral line canals in the stingray function to facilitate localization of prey that contact the skin during benthic feeding. This study used comparative neurophysiological and morphological techniques to test whether ventral non-pored canals encode the velocity of skin movements, and show other adaptations that may enhance detection of tactile stimuli from their prey. Resting discharge rate of lateral line primary afferent neurons was lower among units from ventral than dorsal canal groups. The ventral non-pored canals had a higher

Vertebrate calcitonin-producing cells (C-cells) are neuroendocrine cells that secrete the small peptide hormone calcitonin in response to elevated blood calcium levels. Whereas mouse C-cells reside within the thyroid gland and derive from pharyngeal endoderm, avian C-cells are located within ultimobranchial glands and have been reported to derive from the neural crest. We use a comparative cell lineage tracing approach in a range of vertebrate model systems to resolve the ancestral embryonic origin of vertebrate C-cells. We find, contrary to previous studies, that chick C-cells derive from pha

In cartilaginous fishes (Chondrichthyes; sharks, skates and rays (batoids), and holocephalans), the midbrain or mesencephalon can be divided into two parts, the dorsal tectum mesencephali or optic tectum (analogous to the superior colliculus of mammals) and the ventral tegmentum mesencephali. Very little is known about interspecific variation in the relative size and organization of the components of the mesencephalon in these fishes. This study examined the relative development of the optic tectum and the tegmentum in 75 chondrichthyan species representing 32 families. This study also provide

The sensory organs in tegument of two trypanorhynchean species--Nybelinia surmenicola (plerocercoid) and adult Parachristianella sp. (Cestoda, Trypanorhyncha)--were studied with the aim of ultrastructural description and a comparative analysis. The Nybelinia surmenicola plerocercoid lacks papillae with sensory cilia on the bothria adhesive surface. We found an unciliated sensory organ within the median bothria fold. This unciliated free nerve ending contains the central electron-dense disc, three dense supporting rings, and broad root. The nerve ending locates in the basal matrix under the teg

The phylogeography of thornback rays (Raja clavata) was assessed from European waters, using five nuclear microsatellite loci and mitochondrial cytochome b sequences. Strong regional differentiation was found between the Mediterranean basin, the Azores and the European continental shelf. Allelic and haplotype diversities were high in Portuguese populations, consistent with the existence of a refugium along the Iberian Peninsula. Unexpectedly, high diversity was also found in the English Channel/North Sea area. The lowest genetic diversity was found in the Black Sea. Populations sampled from th

Species of the eutetrarhynchid genus Hispidorhynchus Schaeffner and Beveridge, 2012 possess an uncinate macrohook on the bothrial surface of the basal swelling of each tentacle. This unique feature of the oncotaxy is only shared with the closely related genus Oncomegas Dollfus, 1929 . A new species of Hispidorhynchus is described from specimens infecting Styracura schmardae (Werner, 1904) (Potamotrygonidae) from the western Caribbean Sea off the coast of Belize and Panama. Hispidorhynchus styracurae n. sp. differs from its 3 congeners in the possession of smaller and narrower bulbs, fewer prin

Estuarine ecosystems are increasingly threatened by anthropogenic activities that deplete or replace natural habitats. This may lead to cascading effects in estuarine food webs as the availability of primary producers changes. Rays are ecosystem engineers that feed in sedimentary environments, yet their main prey items and the primary producers supporting their nutrition are unknown. The aim of this study was to assess resource use of two ray species in Wallis Lake, New South Wales, Australia, the estuary stingray (Hemitrygon fluviorum) and the common stingaree (Trygonoptera testacea). Using s

Male cownose rays (Rhinoptera bonasus) can display aggressive behaviors toward other conspecifics. This can lead to accidental, self-inflicted trauma to the subordinate ray attempting to flee, such as rostral or ocular abrasions and ulcerations. Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists, such as deslorelin acetate (Suprelorin®), are commonly used among mammals for both reproductive management and behavioral mitigation, such as aggression in males. However, limited work has been done to advance our understanding of GnRH agonists in elasmobranchs. In an attempt to mitigate aggression, the u

In cartilaginous fish, two cDNAs encoding calcitonin-family receptors were isolated for the first time from the stingray brain. The open reading frame of one receptor cDNA coded a 525-amino acid protein. The amino acid identity of this receptor to human calcitonin-receptor-like receptor (CRLR) is 64.5%, frog CRLR is 64.7%, and flounder CRLR is 61.2% and this was higher than to human calcitonin receptor (CTR) (46.1%), frog CTR (54.7%), and flounder CTR (48.9%). We strongly suggested that this receptor is a ray CRLR based on phylogenetic analysis. In case of the second receptor, amino acid ident

Tetrapods possess up to five morphologically distinct vertebral series: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral and caudal. The evolution of axial regionalization has been linked to derived Hox expression patterns during development and the demands of weight-bearing and walking on land. These evolutionary and functional explanations are supported by an absence of similar traits in fishes, living and extinct. Here, I show that, Tarrasius problematicus, a marine ray-finned fish from the Mississippian (Early Carboniferous; 359-318 Ma) of Scotland, is the first non-tetrapod known to possess tetrapod-li
