OBJECTIVES: Earlier qualitative researchers studying athletes' dual careers (DCs) have shown that sociocultural discourses on gender are ingrained in DC policies and practices, creating gender inequalities and hierarchies. In this study, we aimed to extend this body of research by examining how Finnish elite youth ski coaches discursively construct athletes' education and gender in their talk and coaching practices. Similarly, we examined how coaches' beliefs about athletes' holistic development are interlinked with broader sociocultural discourses on gender.
DESIGN: Qualitative study.

The purposes of the current study were to 1) test if the hinge position in the binding of skating skis has an effect on gross efficiency or cycle characteristics and 2) investigate whether hinge positioning affects synergistic components of the muscle activation in six lower leg muscles. Eleven male skiers performed three 4-min sessions at moderate intensity while cross-country ski-skating and using a klapskate binding. Three different positions were tested for the binding's hinge, ranging from the front of the first distal phalange to the metatarsal-phalangeal joint. Gross efficiency and cycl

INTRODUCTION: Shoulder dislocations are common ski hill injuries. Rapid reduction is known to improve outcomes; however, advanced providers are not always available to provide care to these patients. In 2017, nonmedical ski patrollers at Sunshine Village ski resort in Alberta, Canada, were trained to perform anterior shoulder dislocation (ASD) reductions. Program success was determined by a chart review after the 2020 ski season.
METHODS: This study retrospectively reviewed data on patients who presented to Sunshine Village ski patrol with a suspected ASD and who met the study inclusion crite

BACKGROUND: Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) is increasingly performed in younger and more active patients. Therefore, there are expectations relating to a return-to-sport. Downhill skiing is a physically demanding sport associated with substantial joint loading and risk of injury. There is a lack of high-quality evidence regarding a return to downhill skiing following medial or lateral UKA. This systematic review evaluates the available evidence regarding return to downhill skiing following either medial or lateral UKA.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This review was prospectively registered o

BACKGROUND: Return to sports following total hip arthroplasty (THA) is important to an increasingly younger and active clientele. However, knowledge about in vivo joint forces during sports is scarce and often only estimated. As skiing is controversially debated as an activity following THA, we measured in vivo joint loads in instrumented THAs during cross-country ski simulation.
METHODS: Five untrained subjects who had previously received instrumented THAs were instructed to perform double poling and diagonal poling exercises on a ski simulator and to walk on a treadmill at 4 km/h as a refer

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of tactical positioning on performance in the heats of sprint cross-country (XC) skiing among men and women and the consistency of overtaking events over repeated competitions on the same racecourse. Thirty male and thirty female elite to world-class level skiers within each competition [(sprint International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) points: 40 ± 21 vs. 35 ± 24)] performed two repeated world-cup competitions at four different venues (two in the classical and two in the skating style) between 2017 and 2020. Cross-country skiing is a popular Olympic winter sport, which is also used extensively as a recreational activity. While cross-country skiing primarily is regarded as a demanding endurance activity it is also technically challenging, as it contains two main styles (classical and skating) and many sub-techniques within these styles. To further understand the physiological demands and technical challenges of cross-country skiing it is imperative to identify sub-techniques and basic motion features during training and competitions. Therefore, this paper presents features for identification and as

This study aims to develop and validate an automated system for identifying skating-style cross-country subtechniques using inertial sensors. In the first experiment, the performance of a male cross-country skier was used to develop an automated identification system. In the second, eight male and seven female college cross-country skiers participated to validate the developed identification system. Each subject wore inertial sensors on both wrists and both roller skis, and a small video camera on a backpack. All subjects skied through a 3450 m roller ski course using a skating style at their

The purpose of the study was to analyse the flexion angles of the ski boot, ankle and knee joints of an above-knee prosthesis and to compare them with an intact leg and a control group of skiers. One subject with an above-knee amputation of the right leg and eight healthy subjects simulated the movement of a skiing turn by performing two-leg squats in laboratory conditions. By adding additional loads in proportion to body weight (BW; +1/3 BW, +2/3 BW, +3/3 BW), various skiing regimes were simulated. Change of Flexion Angle (CoFA) and Range of Motion (RoM) in the ski boot, ankle and knee joints

The occurrence of aortic dissections after deceleration trauma is commonplace but aortic injuries after blunt trauma are extremely rare complications. We report a case of an acute aortic rupture accompanied by a type B dissection after a skiing accident with blunt thoracic trauma and renal contusion. The leading symptom was the onset of hematuria 12 h later. The computed tomography (CT) angiography permitted the exact diagnosis and the patient was transferred for acute thoracic endovascular aortic repair. This regimen resulted in the patient achieving a stable condition and potentially harmful

We evaluated the use of Kocher's original method (without humeral traction) for reduction of acute anterior glenohumeral dislocation in 28 alpine skiers and snowboarders at a single ski area during the 1995-1996 ski season. In all cases, reduction was begun within 1 hour of the acute injury. The Kocher method alone was successful in 23 (82%) patients. Of the patients having a successful reduction by means of the original Kocher technique, the mean reduction time was less than 5 minutes, and 9 (39%) of the reductions were achieved in less than 1 minute. Only 1 patient experienced discomfort sig

Amongst the large number of severe sprains of the lateral ulnar ligament of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb by skiing accidents which we treat each year as a result of our geographical situation, we have encountered an original lesion on two occasions. The patients were referred with unstable palmar dislocation of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb despite an attempt of reduction under local anaesthesia performed at the ski resort by practitioners particularly well trained in this form of traumatology. On examination, the thumb was globally painful and presented a defect of

BACKGROUND: Alpine skiing requires flexibility, endurance, strength and rotational ability, which may be lost after long fusions to the pelvis for adult spinal deformity (ASD). ASD patients may worry about their ability to return to skiing (RTS) postoperatively. There is currently insufficient data for spine surgeons to adequately address questions about when, or if, their patients might RTS.
METHODS: Patients with a history of spinal fusion to pelvis from T10 or higher were screened for skiing participation during the November 2023-April 2024 season. Adolescent and adult patients ≥12 years o
