Skin Pigmentation Abnormalities and Their Possible Relationship with Skin Aging.

Skin disorders showing abnormal pigmentation are often difficult to manage because of their uncertain etiology or pathogenesis. Abnormal pigmentation is a common symptom accompanying aging skin. The association between skin aging and skin pigmentation abnormalities can be attributed to certain inherited disorders characterized by premature aging and abnormal pigmentation in the skin and some therapeutic modalities effective for both. Several molecular mechanisms, including oxidative stress, mitochondrial DNA mutations, DNA damage, telomere shortening, hormonal changes, and autophagy impairment

Features of the Skin Microbiota in Common Inflammatory Skin Diseases.

Many relatively common chronic inflammatory skin diseases manifest on the face (seborrheic dermatitis, rosacea, acne, perioral/periorificial dermatitis, periocular dermatitis, etc.), thereby significantly impairing patient appearance and quality of life. Given the yet unexplained pathogenesis and numerous factors involved, these diseases often present therapeutic challenges. The term "microbiome" comprises the totality of microorganisms (microbiota), their genomes, and environmental factors in a particular environment. Changes in human skin microbiota composition and/or functionality are belie

Potential role of the skin microbiota in Inflammatory skin diseases.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory skin diseases include a variety of skin diseases, such as seborrheic dermatitis, acne, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and so on, which are more common and tend to have a significant impact on patients' quality of life. Inflammatory skin diseases often result in physical or psychological distress; however, the pathogenesis of these diseases have not been clearly elucidated. Many factors are involved in the pathogenesis of inflammatory skin diseases, including heredity, environment, immunity, epidermal barrier, mental disorders, infection and so on. In recent years, skin m

Glyoxalase System in the Progression of Skin Aging and Skin Malignancies.

Dicarbonyl compounds, including methylglyoxal (MGO) and glyoxal (GO), are mainly formed as byproducts of glucose metabolism. The main glyoxalase system consists of glyoxalase I and II (Glo1 and Glo2) and is the main enzyme involved in the detoxification of dicarbonyl stress, which occurs as an accumulation of MGO or GO due to decreased activity or expression of Glo1. Dicarbonyl stress is a major cause of cellular and tissue dysfunction that causes various health issues, including diabetes, aging, and cancer. The skin is the largest organ in the body. In this review, we discuss the role of the

Tattoo skin reaction as a skin manifestation of systemic sarcoidosis.

A 41-year-old man presented with itching of the skin surrounding his tattoos, blurred vision, fever, general fatigue, and arthralgia. Physical examination revealed skin bulges confined to the tattoo ink lines. Histological analyses of the skin revealed non-caseating granulomas surrounding the tattoo inks. Together with other clinical manifestations including uveitis, lymph nodes swelling, and elevated serum angiotensin-converting enzyme and lysozyme, he was diagnosed with systemic sarcoidosis. The administration of prednisolone alleviated the sarcoidosis-related symptoms, including skin change

Recent Advances in Studies of Skin Color and Skin Cancer.

The relationship between skin color and skin cancer is well established: the less melanin in one's skin the greater the risk for developing skin cancer. This review is in two parts. First, we summarize the current understanding of the cutaneous pigmentary system and trace melanin from its synthesis in the pigment cell melanosomes through its transfer to keratinocytes. We also present new methods for reducing melanin content in hyper-pigmented areas of skin such as solar lentigenes, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Second, we present evidence that at least one mechanism for the

The color of skin: blue diseases of the skin, nails, and mucosa.

Diseases of the skin, hair, nails and mucosa can appear as flesh-colored lesions or may present as any of the colors of the visual spectrum. Diseases associated with blue (or shades of blue) discoloration represent a unique group of conditions that occur de novo or as a reaction to either a topical or a systemic agent to which the individual has been exposed. Blue diseases can affect the skin, the nails or the mucosal membranes of the mouth (buccal mucosa, gingiva, lips, palate or tongue) or eyes (sclera). In addition to appearing blue, they can also appear as blue-black, blue-brown, blue-gray

The color of skin: red diseases of the skin, nails, and mucosa.

Red color is pervasive in local and systemic skin conditions. It is a color that often reflects variations of dermal blood flow and extends beyond the rubor and calor of inflammation. The pathophysiology of red skin involves remote and local chemical mediators that dilate arteriolar smooth muscle and increase blood flow to superficial vessels and capillary beds. Incident light hits hemoglobin, which preferentially absorbs light of shorter wavelengths, such as blue, and reflects warmer colors. Due to its pervasiveness and consistency, red color is a useful descriptive factor in helping narrow a

The color of skin: black diseases of the skin, nails, and mucosa.

Gradations in skin color are a consequence of differing amounts of melanin and their varying distribution. Although many darkly pigmented skin lesions are melanocytic and can be attributed to melanin content, the color of a black lesion can also be due to blood, necrotic tissue, or exogenous pigment. The source, pattern, and distribution of the color in black lesions usually offer important insight into its etiology. This contribution reviews conditions that can take on a black color, discussing the cause of the hue and any additional impact sun exposure may have.

The color of skin: brown diseases of the skin, nails, and mucosa.

Brown diseases comprise disorders leading to hyperpigmentation in skin and nails. Melasma is an acquired skin disorder that is characterized by brownish macules that typically occur on the face. Schamberg disease, also known as progressive pigmented purpura, is characterized by brown pigmentation with pepper spots on their edges. We summarize the epidemiology, pathogenesis, histologic features, and treatment choices for additional brown diseases, including melasma, pigmented purpuric dermatoses, postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, drug-induced hyperpigmentation, and pigmentations due to system

The color of skin: yellow diseases of the skin, nails, and mucosa.

The colors reflected from the skin are important indicators of dermatologic and systemic disorders. Incident light is subject to absorption by chromophores in the skin and scattering. Chromophores associated with yellow light reflection include the carotenoids and bilirubin. Various pathophysiologic mechanisms associated with these and other chromophores manifest with a yellow hue on examination. This review describes these mechanisms and the clinical features of yellow skin disorders by morphology. A brief summary of the differential diagnosis, laboratory investigations, and treatments are pr

The evaluation and treatment of complicated skin and skin structure infections.

BACKGROUND: Skin and skin structure infections are frequently encountered in clinical practice. Fortunately, these infections usually produce only mild to moderate symptoms and signs. Some, however, are severe and may even be life-threatening. OBJECTIVE: To review the approach to the evaluation and treatment of patients with complicated skin and skin structure infections and to discuss when to consider using either established antibiotics or recently licensed agents for treating these infections. METHODS: In addition to a non-systematic literature review of complicated skin and skin structur

[Guided healing and skin graft for the treatment of skin wounds].

OBJECTIVE: The present study compared the treatment of skin wounds by means of conducted healing (an innovative method for treatment of secondary healing) and autogenous skin graft. METHODS: Seventeen rabbits were submitted to removal of two skin segments, one on each side of the dorsum. The graft donor area was left as a wound for conducted healing (A) and was submitted only to debridement, local care and dressings. The skin removed from the above mentioned side was implanted as a graft (B) to cover the wound on the other side. Thus, each animal received the two types of treatment on its dor

A survey of skin problems and skin care regimens in the elderly.

In an attempt to provide clinically relevant data regarding both dermatologic disease and skin care needs in the elderly, 68 noninstitutionalized volunteers, aged 50 to 91 years (average age, 74 years), were enrolled in a study consisting of a 33-item questionnaire and a total cutaneous examination. Two thirds of the entire group and 83% of the 23 octogenarians reported medical concerns regarding their skin, with pruritus as the most frequent complaint. On examination, all subjects had at least one cutaneous abnormality, and symptomatic and/or medically significant disorders were present in 64

The tight-skin mouse: physical and biochemical properties of the skin.

The tight-skin (TSK) mouse has unusual structural skin properties. These include increased thickness of the dermis, increased tensile strength, and increased adherence to subcutaneous tissues. We have investigated several physical and biochemical characteristics of skin from the TSK mouse and compared them to the normal mouse. An increase in thickness, wet weight, and hydroxyproline content was found in the skin of the TSK mouse. In addition, there was an increase in the ratio of soluble to insoluble collagen in the TSK mouse when compared to the normal mouse. These findings in the skin of the

Advances in fractional technology for skin rejuvenation, skin tightening, drug delivery, and treating scars and skin defects.

The development of fractional photothermolysis has revolutionized the treatment of skin scarring, rejuvenation, and tightening. By creating targeted microthermal zones and leaving surrounding tissue intact, this concept has provided the field with efficacious results, with less downtime and a better safety profile. This has started to change the paradigm of what is considered first-line treatment for scarring and rejuvenation. While originally applied to nonablative lasers, fractionation has now been employed in ablative, quality-switched, picosecond, and novel hybrid fractional lasers. Furthe
