Pathophysiological Mechanisms in Sclerosing Skin Diseases.

Sclerosing skin diseases represent a large number of distinct disease entities, which include systemic sclerosis, localized scleroderma, and scleredema adultorum. These pathologies have a common clinical appearance and share histological features. However, the specific interplay between cytokines and growth factors, which activate different mesenchymal cell populations and production of different extracellular matrix components, determines the biomechanical properties of the skin and the clinical features of each disease. A better understanding of the mechanisms underlying these events is prer

[Skin and mucosal diseases in musicians].

Whether they are professional or amateur, musicians are exposed to a various number of complications in relation to their practice, including cutaneous ones. The latter are often a simple musical stigma and a reason for pride for the musician. If they are symptomatic and disturb the musician, they have to be treated and prevented. We reviewed here those occupational and peculiar lesions that are often not that well known to the dermatologist.

[Skin diseases associated with environmental factors].

BACKGROUND: Multiple environmental exposures may derange the regulatory and repair mechanisms of the skin and lead to dermatological disease. OBJECTIVES: Provide an overview of non-allergic skin diseases associated with environmental factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Review of current scientific evidence for associations of non-allergic skin diseases with environmental exposures: irritation, chemicals, infection, UV-radiation, temperature. RESULTS: Predisposition (constitution e. g. for atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and filaggrin gene mutations) and exposure (environment) are crucial for disea

Eosinophilic Skin Diseases: A Comprehensive Review.

Eosinophilic skin diseases, commonly termed as eosinophilic dermatoses, refer to a broad spectrum of skin diseases characterized by eosinophil infiltration and/or degranulation in skin lesions, with or without blood eosinophilia. The majority of eosinophilic dermatoses lie in the allergy-related group, including allergic drug eruption, urticaria, allergic contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, and eczema. Parasitic infestations, arthropod bites, and autoimmune blistering skin diseases such as bullous pemphigoid, are also common. Besides these, there are several rare types of eosinophilic derma

Skin diseases in internationally adopted children.

Internationally adopted children often present diseases contracted in the country of origin. Skin diseases are common in new arrivals, and diagnosis may prove challenging for GPs or even dermatologists if they are inexperienced in the extensive geographic and ethnic diversity of international adoptees. To analyse the frequency and characteristics of skin diseases in international adoptees. In total, 142 adoptees were evaluated for a cross-sectional cohort study. The most frequent diseases observed at arrival were dermatological conditions. Of the adoptees, 70% presented at least one skin disea

Skin diseases in the Peruvian Amazonia.

BACKGROUND: Dermatologic diseases vary widely as a result of geographic location and may be influenced by environmental factors. Aim To determine the epidemiology of dermatological diseases in the Peruvian Amazonia. METHODS: Transversal and multicentric study, which were carried out during February of 2006, 2007, and 2008 in three regional hospitals in the Peruvian Amazonia. All new patients who were looking for dermatological consultation were included. Univariate/bivariate analysis, chi square, and multinomial logistic regression were used with a confidence level of 95%. RESULTS: A total o

Skin diseases in intensive care medicine.

Though most dermatoses are not life-threatening, skin diseases play an important role in intensive care medicine. Skin findings in intensive care patients may reflect the underlying disease or be complications of intensive medical care. Most important are drug reactions, infections, bacterial toxin reactions, erythroderma, ANCA-positive vasculitides (such as Wegener granulomatosis) and bleeding disorders.

[Work-related diseases of the skin].

Work-related diseases of the skin are aetiologically completely different diseases. The common denominator is that they are all triggered by occupational activity. Allergic and cumulative irritant contact eczema occur the most frequently. Early reporting of occupational dermatosis to the accident insurance carrier should first and foremost lead to adequate preventive measures at the workplace. Early recognition, systematic therapy and rapidly implemented prevention should enable the affected person to continue to work in his or her occupation. To implement appropriate preventive measures, the

Skin diseases in kidney transplant recipients.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of skin diseases in kidney transplant recipients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed on 233 kidney transplant recipients in Ekbatan Hospital of Hamedan in 2004. The patients were examined by a dermatologist and diagnosis was made on the basis of clinical observations. Biopsies and scraping of the lesions were taken whenever necessary. RESULTS: Of the patients, 226 (97%) suffered from one or more skin lesions. The most common lesions were drug related, including hypertrichosis, gingival hyperplasia,

Skin diseases described in Japan 2004.

During the last century of modern dermatology, more than 30 skin diseases have been described first by physicians from Japan. Many of those conditions were disorders of pigmentation and keratinization, which are quite common in Oriental patients. Since the late 1940s, a number of skin diseases first reported in Japan have gained attention internationally among them being Kimura disease, hypomelanosis of Ito, Kawasaki disease, adult T-cell leukemia/ lymphoma, eosinophilic pustular folliculitis, prurigo pigmentosa, and Ofuji's papuloerythroderma. In this article, we review skin diseases that wer

Occupational skin diseases among dental nurses.

Out of 923 female dental nurses in the Helsinki district, 799 were interviewed using a computer-assisted telephone interview. A structured questionnaire was used to inquire about skin, respiratory symptoms, atopy, work history and methods, and exposure at work. The 328 nurses, who reported work-related dermatitis on their hands, forearms or face, were invited to an interview by an occupational physician; 245 nurses participated. 31 nurses had previously been diagnosed with an occupational skin disease (OSD). 133 nurses with a suspected OSD were selected for further clinical examinations with p

Molecular advances in genetic skin diseases.

The genes for several genetic skin diseases have been identified in recent years. This development improves diagnostic capabilities and genetic counseling, and investigators can now turn to the molecular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of these diseases. The identification of the causative genes has led to the generation of mouse models for some genetic skin diseases. A study of the keratin 10 deficient mouse, a model for epidermolytic hyperkeratosis, and a mouse model for Bloom syndrome are reviewed in this article. Several studies also evaluate the relation between genotype and pheno
