INTRODUCTION: To describe the prevalence of infectious diseases in immigrants.
METHODS: The Mantoux tuberculin skin test and serology testing for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV and syphilis were performed in 488 immigrants.
RESULTS: A positive reaction to the Mantoux (> or = 10 mm) was found in 19.1% of individuals from Africa, 9.6% from Eastern Europe and 5.8% from South America (p < 0.001). With regard to hepatitis B, 2.5% of the Africans, 2.1% of the Eastern Europeans and none of the South Americans were carriers of the virus (p 5 0.02).

Brazil may have the highest absolute number of individuals infected by human T cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1). It has been suggested that the prevalence of HTLV-1 is increased in patients with skin diseases. This study shows a higher prevalence of this infection in 1,229 patients attending a Brazilian dermatology clinic (0.7%) when compared to blood donors (0.22%). The naturally occurring T lymphocytotoxic antibodies in patients with viral and related skin diseases were investigated and compared with those of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The incidences of T lymphocytotoxic antibodies in exanthema suspected of viral infection, infectious mononucleosis, rubella and pityriasis rosea were 28%, 44%, 8% and 28% respectively. Tinea nigra is a superficial mycosis whose diagnosis is confirmed by isolating the infectious agent Hortae werneckii through mycological examinations. In vivo reflectance confocal microscopy, initially used in melanocytic dermatosis, has been used with skin infectious diseases to identify the parasite at the cellular level. We report, for the first time in the scientific literature, the use of reflectance confocal microscopy in a case of tinea nigra and compare its findings to dermoscopy and mycological examination results.

The dermatologic problems observed in athletes are related to their skin type, age, sex, sporting activities, environment, and hereditary factors. The most common dermatologic problems are acne; bacterial, fungal, and viral infections; infestations, and contact dermatitis. The dermatologic conditions that exclude an athlete from participating in the sporting event are infectious disorders. Early recognition and treatment of these skin diseases permit the athlete to continue participation without disability or reduced performance.
