Longitudinal change in sleep, functional, and behavioural characteristics in a cohort of children with Down syndrome.

This paper describes the longitudinal change in sleep, functional, and behavioural characteristics in a cohort of children with Down syndrome, including the effect of sleep interventions in a subset. A prospective longitudinal cohort study was undertaken in children with Down syndrome aged 3-16 years comparing (1) children referred to a tertiary sleep medicine clinic who received sleep hygiene advice and an additional sleep treatment (DSref_I) with (2) children attending the same clinic who only received sleep hygiene advice (DSref_N) and (3) children recruited from the community who, were not

Higher vulnerability to poor circadian light hygiene in individuals with a history of COVID-19.

Seven-day actigraphy was performed within 1 month in 122 community-dwelling adults (mean age 24.40 y, 31 (25.4%) men) in the same city of Tyumen, Russia. Groups with different COVID-19 status (present, COVID-19(+), n = 79 vs absent, COVID-19(-), n = 43) did not differ in mean age, gender distribution, or body mass index. Vaccination status was equally represented in the COVID groups. We found that COVID-19 status, a history of SARS-CoV-2 infection, was differentially associated with daylight susceptibility. Daylight exposure was estimated using parametric and non-parametric indices: 24-h Ampli

Light Hygiene for Circadian Health: A Molecular Perspective.

In discussing the interplay between light exposure/blue light exposure (LE/BLE) and circadian health, we emphasize the role of light hygiene and its effects on maintaining sleep, mood, and metabolic health, among other physiological processes. We define compromised circadian light hygiene as low dynamic range and/or irregular 24-hour patterns of LE. Poor light hygiene interferes with circadian entrainment and weakens circadian robustness alignment, thereby increasing health hazards. We provide an overview of the complex molecular pathways underlying light perception and downstream signaling. G

Boarding versus day-students: A mixed-methods analysis of sleep and its relationship with psychological distress.

BACKGROUND: Boarding students face unique challenges when entering school, including: adapting to a novel environment, where they are separated from family, friends and culture, for up to 40 weeks per year. A particular challenge is sleep. A further challenge is coping with the demands of boarding with its potential impact on psychological well-being. AIMS: To explore how boarders' sleep differs from that of their day-student peers, and how this relates to psychological well-being. SAMPLE AND METHODS: 309 students (59 boarding students and 250 day-students, at one Adelaide school) completed

[Sleep disorders among adolescents--a major problem in mental health care].

Sleep disturbances are common in adolescents. The etiologies include biological, environmental, and sociocultural factors. The structure of sleep changes during adolescence, and it is easy for adolescents to stay awake. Sleep deprivation causes psychiatric symptoms. On the other hand, many psychiatric disorders cause secondary insomnia. The primary care is sleep hygiene counselling and behavioural therapy. If the sleep disorder is secondary, treatment of the primary disorder is the most important help. The scientific data of pharmacological management of insomnia of adolescent is thin. Melaton

[Headaches in childhood: association with sleep disorders and psychological implications].

INTRODUCTION: Infantile headache is an increasingly important cause of medical consultation, due both to its increasing prevalence and its subsequent repercussion on the child's life. Also, certain sleep disorders (parasomnias) are commoner in infancy than in later life. The relationship between headache and sleep disorders is not clear, but from the literature it would seem that there is an association, at least in some types of headache, in adults. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In order to determine possible alterations in patterns of sleep in children with chronic headache (a history of headache d

[Neurosomnology: in the cutting-edge of neurology].

The surnames that honor the title of this work belong to individuals fascinated by the function of sleep and its integration in neurological illness. Sleep is a function of the brain exhibiting changes with age that are predictable. There are two major manifestations of sleep alteration: somnolence and insomnia. A rich variety of sleep alterations is associated with numerous neurological disorders. Some occur acutely like in stroke whereas others appear gradually like those associated with Parkinson's disease and the dementias. The pathology of sleep is a new area of involvement in the scope o

Effect of behavioural sleep interventions on blood pressure, heart rate, and heart rate variability in adults with poor sleep health: a systematic review, meta-analysis, and meta-regression analysis.

BACKGROUND: Poor sleep health is known to negatively impact cardiovascular risk factors, including systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), heart rate (HR), and heart rate variability (HRV). Consequently, there is interest in determining the impact of improving sleep on cardiovascular risk. We reviewed studies aimed at improving sleep using (1) Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) and/or sleep hygiene and (2) sleep extension on these risk factors. METHODS: Literature searches were performed on MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library. Studies featuring adults ≥ 18

Prevalence of sleep-related problems and risks in a community-dwelling older adult population: a cross-sectional survey-based study.

BACKGROUND: Despite evidence of adverse health consequences of inadequate restorative sleep for older adults, assessment of sleep quantity, quality, and use of sleep aids is not routinely done. We aimed to characterize sleep problems, sleep risks, and advice received about sleep in a community-dwelling older adult population, overall and in subgroups with health conditions and functional difficulties. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used weighted self-report data for 5074 Kaiser Permanente Northern California members aged 65-79y who responded to a 2017 or 2020 Member Health Survey. We est

Accelerated Education Intervention: A Pilot Study to Assess the Effectiveness of a Brief, Self-Paced Intervention to Prevent Burnout in Physician Assistant Students.

PURPOSE: Physician assistant (PA) programs have an academically rigorous curriculum, which places a myriad of pressures on students and contributes to burnout. The benefits of optimal quality and quantity of sleep are well documented, yet students still view sacrificing sleep as a necessary step in academic success. The purpose of this pilot study was to create behavior changes to promote optimal sleep hygiene in PA school and decrease measurements of burnout. METHODS: 39 PA students from a single institution volunteered to take part in an 8-week study. Wrist actigraphy was used to measure st

Impact of Sleep and Associated Factors on the Prevalence of Early Childhood Caries: An Analytical Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood caries (ECC) occur soon after the eruption of teeth and can progress rapidly, causing severe impact on the physical, physiological, and psychological well-being of the child. Irregularities in sleep patterns can result in decreased salivary flow rate and the immune response, which ultimately can affect the rate of progression of early childhood caries. AIM: To assess the prevalence of early childhood caries and its association with sleep practices, the habit of frequent snacking, and the usage of phones and smart devices by children before bedtime in the age group

Factors Associated with Excessive Daytime Sleepiness in Medical Students of a Higher Education Institution of Bucaramanga.

INTRODUCTION: Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) can interfere with academic and professional performance, as affected individuals tend to fall asleep in situations that demand a high level of alertness. Medical students are often a population at risk of suffering from EDS due to the demanding number of study hours, the significant number of credits per subject in the academic curriculum, practical teaching sessions and hospital night shifts, which can lead to sleep deprivation or sleep debt. It is for these reasons that it is important to estimate the prevalence of EDS and its associated fact

Sleep problems.

Sleep complaints are common in the elderly, and are often related to physiological changes with ageing, or secondary to illness and drug therapy. Primary sleep disorders, such as sleep apnoea and movement disorders, are also common. Management should be specific to the problem. Attention to underlying factors and sleep hygiene, as well as reassurance and education about age-related sleep changes, will often be sufficient. Hypnotics, which usually offer only temporary symptomatic relief, may be counterproductive, and should be prescribed only in the short term, except in limited specific cases.

Health-related quality of life among veterans in addictions treatment: identifying behavioral targets for future intervention.

BACKGROUND: US veterans report lower health-related quality of life (HRQoL) relative to the general population. Identifying behavioral factors related to HRQoL that are malleable to change may inform interventions to improve well-being in this vulnerable group. PURPOSE: The current study sought to characterize HRQoL in a largely male sample of veterans in addictions treatment, both in relation to US norms and in association with five recommended health behavior practices: regularly exercising, managing stress, having good sleep hygiene, consuming fruits and vegetables, and being tobacco free.

It has been reported that patients with epilepsy often have insomnia and/or daytime sleepiness; the symptomatologic features differ in seizure types. Not only the administration of anti-epileptics, but also inappropriate sleep hygiene cause daytime sleepiness. In subjective assessment of sleepiness, we need to pay attention if it can correctly assess or not. The prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea in patients with epilepsy is approximately 10-30%. Sleep apnea deteriorates the seizure control because of worsen sleep condition by sleep apnea, especially in elderly patients. Some researchers re
