Adaptive servo-ventilation therapy of central sleep apnoea and its effect on sleep quality.

OBJECTIVES: Poor sleep quality is common in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). This study tested the hypothesis that adaptive servo-ventilation (ASV) therapy in CHF patients whose central sleep apnoea (CSA) was not suppressed by continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) (CPAP-non-responders) would improve sleep quality compared to CPAP-responders receiving ongoing CPAP therapy. METHODS: Eighty-two patients with CHF (65 ± 9 years, left ventricular ejection fraction 35 ± 16 %) and CSA [apnoea-hypopnoea index (AHI) ≥15/h] were retrospectively studied. Within an average of 47 days, patie

More severe hypoxemia is associated with better subjective sleep quality in obstructive sleep apnea.

BACKGROUND: Perceived sleep quality may play an important role in diagnosis and therapy for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, few studies have assessed factors that are associated with perceived sleep quality in OSA patients. Hypoxemia depresses the central nervous system and attenuates the perceived respiratory load in asthmatic patients. This study aimed to investigate the factors related to perceived sleep quality, focusing on the role of hypoxemia. METHODS: Polysomnography studies of 156 OSA patients were reviewed. Traditional polysomnographic parameters, including parameters of oxy

Dyadic associations between sleep quality, diet-related self-regulation, and diet quality in couples.

BACKGROUND: Although poor sleep is known to impair diet quality and self-regulation, research has primarily examined these effects within individuals. For cohabiting couples, one partner's poor sleep may affect both partners' diet quality. PURPOSE: This study examined whether sleep quality is associated with both one's own and one's partner's diet quality, and whether impaired self-regulation processes linked partners' poor sleep and poor diet quality. METHODS: We conducted a 3-month dyadic longitudinal study with 204 cohabiting couples (N = 408; M age = 42.4 years). Participants completed a

Association between housing quality and individual health characteristics on sleep quality among Latino farmworkers.

Although poor sleep quality and associated sleep disorders are associated with increased risk of job injury and multiple mental and physical health problems, scant research has examined sleep quality among Latino farmworkers. Interviews were conducted with 371 male Latino farmworkers working in North Carolina during the 2010 agricultural season. Data on housing quality and sleep quality were collected. Access to air conditioning was significantly and positively associated with good sleep quality. This association remained when other housing characteristics and individual health indicators were

A Quality Improvement Project: Improving Sleep Quality and Duration Among Pediatric Mental Health Patients.

This article is a report of a project to improve the quality and duration of sleep among patients ages 3-17 years in an outpatient mental health clinic. The Pediatric Insomnia Severity Index (PISI) (now the Behavioral Sleep Medicine Clinic Sleep Questionnaire) was administered at baseline. Patients and parents were provided with education about the American Academy of Pediatrics sleep tips. Compliance with the sleep tips was tracked using an electronic health record (EHR) checklist. The PISI was administered again after the interventions and showed overall improvement in sleep quality and dura

The effect of sleep quality, sleep components, and environmental sleep factors on core curriculum exam scores among pharmacy students.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep deprivation is associated with poor academic performance, although the impact on pharmacy students has been minimally reported. This study examined sleep quality in pharmacy students in the first (P1), second (P2), and third (P3) professional years during perceived low and high stress periods in a course. Individual sleep and environmental factors were also explored. METHODS: This prospective cohort study used an 18-item survey adapted from the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) that included demographics, individual sleep components, and factors affecting sleep. Individual Differences in Sleep Quality: Exploring the Impact of Temperament on Sleep Through Anxiety and Depression.

According to the functional ensemble of temperament (FET) model, individual differences in temperament arise from the balance of neurotransmitter systems also crucial for regulating circadian rhythms and sleep, suggesting a strong neurobiological link between temperament and sleep behavior. The present cross-sectional study examined whether FET-defined temperamental traits predict interindividual variation in sleep measures. A total of 394 healthy adults completed the Structure of Temperament Questionnaire (STQ-77) and validated measures of sleep quality, insomnia severity, daytime sleepiness,

Midpoint of sleep is associated with sleep quality in older adults with and without symptomatic Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Disrupted sleep is common in individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and may be a marker for AD risk. The timing of sleep affects sleep-wake activity and is also associated with AD, but little is known about links between sleep architecture and the midpoint of sleep in older adults. In this study, we tested if the midpoint of sleep is associated with different measures of sleep architecture, AD biomarkers, and cognitive status among older adults with and without symptomatic AD. METHODS: Participants (N = 243) with a mean age of 74 underwent standardized cognitive assessments,

BACKGROUND: Medical comorbidities increase the risk of severe acute COVID-19 illness. Although sleep problems are common after COVID-19 infection, it is unclear whether insomnia, poor sleep quality, and extremely long or short sleep increase risk of developing COVID-19 infection or hospitalization. METHODS: The study used a cross-sectional survey of a diverse sample of 19,926 US adults. RESULTS: COVID-19 infection and hospitalization prevalence rates were 40.1% and 2.9%, respectively. Insomnia and poor sleep quality were reported in 19.8% and 40.1%, respectively. In logistic regression model

The role of the transdiagnostic sleep and circadian intervention in adolescent bedtime and sleep quality: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: Circadian misalignment is prevalent among adolescents and contributes to sleep deficiency and mental health struggles. There is a need for interventions targeting sleep and circadian difficulties in adolescents. This pilot study examined the effectiveness of a Transdiagnostic Intervention for Sleep and Circadian Dysfunction (TSC) in a community-based adolescent sample with circadian misalignment. We hypothesized that TSC would improve sleep timing and duration, lessen circadian misalignment, improve subjective sleep quality, shorten sleep onset latency, and improve mental health outco
