The smartphone camera as a potential method for transcutaneous bilirubin measurement.

BACKGROUND: Hyperbilirubinemia is a common problem in neonates that can progress into kernicterus. Suspected neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is a common reason for contact with the healthcare system. The severity and management of jaundice are determined based on estimated bilirubin levels. However, no easy and accessible tool for self-assessing neonatal jaundice is currently available. Smartphones could potentially be transformed into a medical device that could be used by both patients and practitioners. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether a digital image produced by a camera embedded on a smartp

Smartphones Offer New Opportunities in Clinical Voice Research.

Smartphone technology provides new opportunities for recording standardized voice samples of patients and sending the files by e-mail to the voice laboratory. This drastically improves the collection of baseline data, as used in research on efficiency of voice treatments. However, the basic requirement is the suitability of smartphones for recording and digitizing pathologic voices (mainly characterized by period perturbations and noise) without significant distortion. In this experiment, two smartphones (a very inexpensive one and a high-level one) were tested and compared with direct microph

A Smartphone Application to Diagnose the Mechanism of Pediatric Supraventricular Tachycardia.

Smartphone applications that record a single-lead ECG are increasingly available. We sought to determine the utility of a smartphone application (AliveCor) to record supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) and to distinguish atrioventricular reentrant tachycardia (AVRT) from atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT) in pediatric patients. A prior study demonstrated that interpretation of standard event and Holter monitors accurately identifies the tachycardia mechanism in only 45 % of recordings. We performed an IRB-approved prospective study in pediatric patients undergoing an ablation

Smartphone apps for spinal surgery: is technology good or evil?

PURPOSE: The increased utilization of smartphones together with their downloadable applications (apps) provides opportunity for doctors, including spinal surgeons, to integrate such technology into clinical practice. However, the clinical reliability of the medical app sector remains questionable. We reviewed available apps themed specifically towards spinal surgery and related conditions and assessed the level of medical professional involvement in their design and content. METHOD: The most popular smartphone app stores (Android, Apple, Blackberry, Windows, Samsung, Nokia) were searched for

Smartphones and burn size estimation: "Rapid Burn Assessor".

Estimation of the total body surface area burned (%TBSA) following a burn injury is used in determining whether to transfer the patient to a burn center and the required fluid resuscitation volumes. Unfortunately, the commonly applied methods of estimation have revealed inaccuracies, which are mostly related to human error. To calculate the %TBSA (quotient), it is necessary to divide the burned surface area (Burned BSA) (numerator in cm2) by the total body surface area (Total BSA) (denominator in cm2). By using everyday objects (eg. credit cards, smartphones) with well-defined surface areas as

An evaluation of diabetes self-management applications for Android smartphones.

We reviewed diabetes apps for Android smartphones. We compiled a list of free and paid apps in April 2011 by searching the Android Market for apps which could track self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG), diabetes medications or calculate prandial insulin dosages. Two reviewers independently evaluated six features per app, using a five-point Likert scale. The sum of the six ratings was the composite usability score, and the mean score of an app's features was the average usability score. Of the 80 Android diabetes apps identified, 42 unique apps were eligible for the study. SMBG recording was

Development of a smartphone based spectrometer for high-resolution urinalysis.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects millions worldwide but remains under-diagnosed, especially in resource-limited settings. Current diagnostic methods, including visual and dipstick urinalysis, lack quantitative accuracy, while laboratory-based tests remain inaccessible for routine or remote monitoring. Here we present SpectraPhone, a smartphone-integrated, portable spectrometer designed for quantitative, point-of-care urinalysis. Leveraging the smartphone's built-in camera and flashlight, SpectraPhone captures high-resolution spectral data to accurately quantify hematuria and albuminuria, w

Neural and computational mechanisms of loss aversion in smartphone addiction.

Smartphones have become integral to daily life, and their overuse can lead to various maladaptive behaviors and decision-making patterns. This study investigated the neural and computational mechanisms underlying smartphone addiction, focusing on its impact on loss-aversion decision-making. We combined computational models, such as the Drift Diffusion Model, with a novel analytic approach, intersubject representational similarity analysis (IS-RSA). Behavioral results showed that higher smartphone addiction symptom (SAS) scores were correlated with reduced loss-aversion (lnλ), while the drift r

Pitfalls using smartphones videos in diagnosing functional seizures.

Expert review of seizure semiology looking at video recordings independent of EEG has been found to be useful for diagnosing functional seizures. Videos recorded outside the hospital containing "spells" have similar sensitivity to EEG when quality recordings are evaluated. Recently, smartphone videos were shown to serve as an adjunct to standard history and physical examination with similar diagnostic yields when compared to diagnostic video-EEG monitoring and reviewed by experts. However, caution must be exercised when interpreting videos of paroxysmal neurological events recorded by caregive
