The potential utility of smell testing to screen for neurodegenerative disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Loss of smell is a common early feature of neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Identifying these conditions in their early stages is important to understand more about early pathophysiological events and the development of disease modifying therapies. Smell testing may be an effective future tool for screening large populations for early neurodegeneration. AREAS COVERED: In this review, we appraise the evidence for, and discuss the likelihood of, the use of smell testing in large screening programs to detect early neurodegeneration. We evalu

Loss of smell or taste as the only symptom of COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Olfactory and taste disorders (OTDs) have recently been reported among patients with COVID-19, and it has been hypothesised that oral and nasal tissues may contain host cells of SARS-CoV-2. We report on two cases (spouses) with SARS-CoV-2 infection with self-reported OTDs, but otherwise no typical respiratory symptoms of COVID-19. CASE PRESENTATION: A man in his nineties (index patient) had respiratory symptoms and dysgeusia, and was diagnosed with COVID-19. His daughter-in-law and son had no respiratory COVID-19 symptoms. However, they experienced complete loss of smell and taste

Taste and smell as chemosensory dysfunctions in COVID-19 infection.

PURPOSE: To review the literature on the presence of two clinical manifestations in patients presenting COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) infection: loss of taste (ageusia) and loss of smell (anosmia). METHODS: PubMed and EMBASE were searched and studies were selected starting from November, 2019 until April 2020; also, the references of the selected articles were evaluated for methodological quality. RESULTS: Of the 19 studies analyzed, five were included to evaluate the presence of ageusia and/or anosmia as symptoms in patients who were tested and resulted positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus. In a total

Viral infection and smell loss: The case of COVID-19.

Olfactory disorders have been increasingly reported in individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Losing the sense of smell has a strong impact on the quality of life, since it may lead to malnutrition, weight loss, food poisoning, depression, and exposure to dangerous chemicals. Individuals who suffer from anosmia (inability to smell) also cannot sense the flavor of food, which is a combination of taste and smell. Interestingly, infected individuals have reported sudden loss of smell with no congested nose, as is frequently observed in com

Sense of smell and quality of life in children with diabetes mellitus.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common chronic systemic diseases seen in children. The increasing prevalence of Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) among children is alarming. Although olfaction has been found to be altered in some adult T1DM subjects, it is unknown whether this is the case in children and, if so, whether the dysfunction adversely influences their quality of life (QOL). METHODS: Using the Pediatric Smell Wheel® (PSW), we measured the olfactory function of 30 T1DM patients and 30 healthy controls [mean ages = 13.1 & 13.0, respectively]. The Turkish version of th

Tobacco Influence on Taste and Smell: Systematic Review of the Literature.

Introduction  In Brazil, estimates show that 14.7% of the adult population smokes, and changes in smell and taste arising from tobacco consumption are largely present in this population, which is an aggravating factor to these dysfunctions. Objectives  The objective of this study is to systematically review the findings in the literature about the influence of smoking on smell and taste. Data Synthesis  Our research covered articles published from January 1980 to August 2014 in the following databases: MEDLINE (accessed through PubMed), LILACS, Cochrane Library, and SciELO. We conducted separa

Does surgery of the olfactory clefts modify the sense of smell?

BACKGROUND: The olfactory outcome after surgery of polyps in the olfactory clefts (OCs) is unknown. This study was designed to (1) investigate the relationship between clinical characteristics and the presence of the respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma (REAH) in the OCs and (2) assess the olfactory outcome after surgery in the OC for either eosinophilic polyps (EP) or REAH in patients with ethmoidectomy for nasal polyposis (NP). METHODS: Seventy-four patients with NP having undergone nasalization procedure were enrolled in this prospective study. The OCs were systematically examined

The effect of laser assisted uvulopalatoplasty on the sense of smell and taste.

AIM: To assess the effect, if any, of Laser Assisted Uvulo Palatoplasty (LAUP) on the sense of smell and taste. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study examined 33 patients undergoing LAUP for snoring. Significant sinonasal pathology was excluded in all patients by a complete examination including rigid nasal endoscopy. None of the cases had any systemic illness or drug history that was likely to affect the sense of smell or taste. Twenty-eight patients were male and five female. The mean age was 44 years (range, 25-67). Twelve patients (36%) were regular smokers, and eight patients (24%)

[The activity of superoxide dismutase in patients with taste and smell dysfunction].

It was revealed that Zinc deficiency might cause taste and smell dysfunction. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), which scavenges superoxide, is a type of zinc enzyme. It was also demonstrated that the overproduction of superoxide damages normal tissue. We therefore measured the activity of SOD in serum and saliva of patients with taste or smell dysfunction by the cytochrome C reduction method using a xanthine-xanthine oxidase system. As a result, in the patients with taste dysfunction, the activities of SOD in both serum and saliva were normal, but mean level of serum Zinc was near to the lower norma

Taste and smell problems: validation of questions for the clinical history.

Complaints of taste and smell dysfunction unaccompanied by symptoms of neurological or nasal problems are not uncommon. However, "I can't taste" is not necessarily an accurate symptom description. Complaints tend to reflect the common confusion between taste sensations (that is, salt, sour, sweet, bitter) and flavor sensations (including taste, smell, temperature, and texture). A number of questions have been identified that help classify symptoms according to the type of dysfunction (taste, smell, or both): whether the problem is quantitative (reduced or absent sensation) or qualitative (dist

[Standardized examination methods for smell and taste and their clinical value].

The diagnostic of disturbances of the chemical senses is from a clinical standpoint still insufficient, as the literature of the whole world shows. Ten years of experimental and clinical investigations as well as the collection and evaluation of the experiences at the University ENT-Clinic Halle/S., GDR--have helped to develop some new tests and tools like a big and a small smell-case, two electrogustometers, the documentation by means of olfacto- and gustograms and so on. Now in the whole GDR a special group of ENT-scientists, members of our ENT society, are working on standardisation. The ex
