Lifestyle, occupational, and reproductive factors in relation to pancreatic cancer risk.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the epidemiology of pancreatic cancer in Egypt. METHODS: We obtained detailed information on smoking, occupational, medical, and reproductive histories from 194 pancreatic cancer cases and 194 controls. RESULTS: Compared with not smoking, smoking cigarettes alone or in conjunction with other smoking methods (eg, water pipe, cigar) was associated with an increased risk (odds ratio [OR], 4.5 and 7.8; 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 1.9-10.7 and 3.0-20.6, respectively). Passive smoking was also a significant risk factor (OR, 6.0; 95% CI, 2.4-14.8). The risk of

Consumption of hookahs, e-cigarettes, and classic cigarettes and the impact on medically assisted reproduction treatment.

Smoking of classic cigarettes has been well-established as a health risk factor, including cardiovascular, neurological, and pulmonary diseases. Adverse effects on human reproduction have also been shown. Smokers are assumed to have a significantly lower chance of pregnancy, however, the impact of smoking on medically assisted reproduction (MAR) treatment outcomes is controversial. Moreover, smoking habits have changed during the last decades since e-cigarettes and hookahs, or water pipes, have become very popular, yet little is known regarding vaping or hookah-smoking patients undergoing MAR

Smoking motivators are different among cigarette and waterpipe smokers: The results of ITUPP.

The present study explores different drivers of cigarette and water pipe smoking among middle and high school students in Isfahan province. A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was conducted. Trained staff collected questionnaires and saliva samples for response accuracy evaluation. Prevalence by demographic, parental and educational factors was calculated. Logistic regression was applied to compare behavior drivers of those who purely smoked cigarettes or a waterpipe. Waterpipe smokers were considered as the reference category. This study reported ORs along 95% confidence intervals; 54

Waterpipe smoke inhalation induces lung injury and aortic endothelial dysfunction in mice.

Waterpipe tobacco smoking (WPS) inhalation has been shown to trigger endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis. However, the mechanisms underlying these effects are still unknown. Here, we assessed the impact and underlying mechanism of WPS exposure for one month on endothelial dysfunction using aortic tissue of mice. The duration of the session was 30 min/day and 5 days/week. Control mice were exposed to air. Inhalation of WPS induced an increase in the number of macrophages and neutrophils and the concentrations of protein, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha), interleukin (IL)-1beta, a

Impact of pictorial health warning labels on smoking beliefs and perceptions among waterpipe smokers: an online randomised cross-over experimental study.

PURPOSE: Waterpipe tobacco smoking (WTS) has substantially increased among young people in Lebanon, who perceive WTS as safer than cigarettes. Health warning labels (HWLs) can inform the adverse effects associated with smoking. Thus, their application to waterpipe offers a favourable policy to limit WTS epidemic. This study assessed the effectiveness of pictorial HWLs and their placements on waterpipe parts (device, tobacco and charcoal package) on several communication outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a randomised cross-over experimental study among 276 waterpipe smokers (aged 18-34) between

Is opium use related to the increased risk of oral cavity cancers? A case-control study in Iran.

BACKGROUND: Oral cavity cancers (OCCs) are the sixth most prevalent cancers in the world. There are strong evidences showing the risk of the cigarette smoking, alcohol use, poor oral hygiene and some types of diets in OCCs; however, few studies explored the relationship between opium and its derivatives (O&D) use and OCCs incidence. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between consumption of O&D and the incidence of OCCs. METHODS: In a case-control; 133 patients with OCCs and 266 healthy controls matched by age, sex, and place of residence were included. Data, including c

Tobacco Product Use Among Adults - United States, 2021.

Commercial cigarette smoking among U.S. adults has declined during the preceding 5 decades (1,2); however, tobacco product use remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States, and some populations continue to be disproportionately affected by tobacco use (1,2). To assess recent national estimates of commercial tobacco use among U.S. persons aged ≥18 years, CDC, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the National Cancer Institute analyzed 2021 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) data. In 2021, an estimated 46 million U.S. adults (18.7%) reported currentl

Tobacco Product Use Among Adults - United States, 2020.

Although cigarette smoking has declined over the past several decades, a diverse landscape of combustible and noncombustible tobacco products has emerged in the United States (1-4). To assess recent national estimates of commercial tobacco product use among U.S. adults aged ≥18 years, CDC analyzed data from the 2020 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). In 2020, an estimated 47.1 million U.S. adults (19.0%) reported currently using any commercial tobacco product, including cigarettes (12.5%), e-cigarettes (3.7%), cigars (3.5%), smokeless tobacco (2.3%), and pipes* (1.1%).† From 2019 to 2020

Analysis of Factors That Interrupt With INR Control in the First Anticoagulation Clinic Monitoring Jordanian Patients.

Multiple factors such as vitamin K consumption, drug interactions, herbs interactions, disease states, and alcohol intake affect international normalized ratio (INR) values and thus warfarin dosing. These variables have been described in general and for all patients in the literature. In contrast, the factors that affect INR control in a specific population are rarely studied. Being aware of these factors contributes a lot in maintaining an INR control and avoiding the supratherapeutic or subtherapeutic anticoagulation and the associated risks of hemorrhage or thromboembolism. The aim of this

The Effect of Motivational Interviewing on Craving and Dependence on Hookah in Suburban Pregnant Women in South East of Iran.

Hookah smoking during pregnancy is a health concern which requires effective interventions. Thus, the authors have aimed to evaluate the effect of motivational interviewing on craving and dependence on hookah in pregnant women (n = 140) addicted to hookah who reside in the outskirts of Zahedan, a city in southeast of Iran. The subjects were selected using the convenience sampling and randomly divided into either the control or intervention group. The intervention group received five motivational interviewing group sessions about hookah smoking withdrawal, whereas the control group was given th

Patterns of E-cigarette Use Frequency-National Adult Tobacco Survey, 2012-2014.

INTRODUCTION: Accounting for occasional or intermittent e-cigarette use has yielded higher estimates of current use among U.S. adults. However, frequency of e-cigarette use by population subgroups is not well described. This study assessed e-cigarette use frequency by sociodemographic characteristics and other tobacco product use among U.S. adults. METHODS: This study analyzed combined data from the 2012-2013 (n=60,192) and 2013-2014 (n=75,233) National Adult Tobacco Survey, a telephone-based survey of U.S. adults aged ≥18 years, to assess frequency of e-cigarette use (daily, some days, rarel

Waterpipe users' reactions and perceived effectiveness of waterpipe-specific pictorial health warning labels: A mixed-method study among US young people.

OBJECTIVES: Waterpipe (WP) smoking has surged among young adults in the US. However, it presents serious health risks that can equal or exceed those of cigarettes. Pictorial warning labels (PWLs) can effectively educate consumers about WP risk. This study engaged young WP users through a mixed-methods approach, including survey and focus group discussions, to evaluate 24 WP-specific PWLs. METHODS: We conducted 17 mixed-gender focus groups with 44 WP smokers (50% females, aged 21-35 years) via HIPAA-compliant Zoom. Guided by the Message Impact Framework, participants completed an anonymous rat

Exposure to Electronic Waterpipes Increases the Risk of Occlusive Cardiovascular Disease in C57BL/6J Mice.

INTRODUCTION: It is well documented that cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the US and worldwide, with smoking being the most preventable cause. Additionally, most smokers die from thrombotic-based diseases, in which platelets play a major role. To this end, because of the proven harm of smoking, several novel tobacco products such as electronic(e)-waterpipe have been gaining popularity among different sectors of the population, partly due to their "false" safety claims. While many investigators have focused on the negative health effects of traditional cigarettes an

Case Report: Imported Melioidosis from Goa, India to Israel, 2018.

A previously healthy young man presented with a chronic cavitary pulmonary infection that began while in Goa, India. Burkholderia pseudomallei was cultured from sputum samples. The infection fully resolved after prolonged antibiotic treatment. Other than traveling during the monsoon season, extensive use of well-water for water-pipe smoking of cannabis was identified as a possible risk factor for infection. This is one of the first reports of travel-associated melioidosis from India. Genomic and immunological characterization suggested that the B. pseudomallei isolate collected from the report

An epidemiological study of acute prolapsed cervical intervertebral disc.

In this epidemiological study of acute prolapsed cervical intervertebral disc, we found that people in the fourth decade of life were affected somewhat more frequently than individuals in other age groups, and men with a prolapsed cervical disc outnumbered women by a ratio of 1.4 to one. Factors that were associated relatively strongly with this diagnosis were frequent lifting of heavy objects on the job that was held around the time of the onset of symptoms, cigarette-smoking, and frequent diving from a board. Positive associations that were of borderline statistical significance or were not

Changes in the smoking behaviour, knowledge and opinion of medical students, 1972-1981.

To examine changes in medical students' smoking behaviour, knowledge and opinion over the last decade, a survey first conducted at the University of Manchester Medical School in 1972 was repeated in 1981. A postal questionnaire was sent to 1163 students, of whom 1112 (96%) replied. A substantial decline in cigarette smoking among medical students has occurred. This largely follows trends in the general population, medical education itself having made little contribution to the change. In 1972, 29% of students were cigarette smokers compared with 17% in 1981. The fall in cigarette smoking was m
