Stigma and Discrimination in Personality Disorders: Perspectives of Those With Lived Experience and Providers.

Stigma and discrimination towards those with a mental disorder are prevalent. This is especially true of those with a personality disorder (PD). The current study explores the extent to which individuals living with a PD experience internalized stigma and discrimination due to their diagnosis as well as the prevalence of self-reported microaggressions and negative attitudes towards individuals with PDs by mental health providers. Individuals with personality disorders (n = 218; Sample 1) and mental health providers (n = 75; Sample 2) were recruited online via postings on social media, online f

Life events stress and psychosocial factors in men with peptic ulcer disease. A multidimensional case-controlled study.

We carried out a case-controlled study of multiple psychological and social factors in 49 men with complicated or uncomplicated peptic ulcer disease. Thirty-two men with renal stones or gallstones and 20 healthy men served as controls. Ulcer patients and controls experienced a similar number of potentially stressful life events. However, ulcer patients perceived their events more negatively (p less than 0.05). Ulcer patients also had significantly more personality disturbances than controls, although no one type of "ulcer personality" was found consistently. Some ulcer patients tended to be hy

CD38 genetic variation is associated with increased personal distress to an emotional stimulus.

Genetic variation in CD38-a putative oxytocin pathway gene-has been linked to higher oxytocin levels, empathy, and sensitive parenting, but also to more negative interpersonal outcomes (e.g., alienation from friends and family, poorer romantic relationship quality). To reconcile these seemingly contradictory findings, we drew upon the idea that CD38 variation may heighten social-emotional sensitivity and, consequently, make individuals prone to negative emotions in distressing interpersonal situations. To test this hypothesis, we performed a secondary analysis of a dataset including participan

Early maladaptive schemas in depression and somatization disorder.

Cognitive theories of depression posit that early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) are key vulnerability factors for psychological disorders. In this study, we investigated specific EMSs as shared or distinct cognitive vulnerability factors for depression and somatization disorder. The sample consisted of patients with Major depressive disorder (N = 30) and Somatization disorder (N = 30) from a community hospital or a psychiatric clinic. Participants completed the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID), the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), and the short form of the Young Schema Questi

Psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy for the treatment of major depression: a synthesis of phenomenological explanations.

Psychedelic-assisted Psychotherapy (PAP) combines the use of psychedelic compounds, such as psilocybin, with psychotherapy. PAP has shown some promise as a novel treatment for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), and empirical research suggests that its efficacy turns on the altered states induced by psychedelic compounds. In this paper we draw on the literature of phenomenology to explain the therapeutic potential of psychedelic experiences. Svenaeus characterises mental illness as a form of suffering that entails three distinct but related experiences of alienation or "unhomelike being-in-the-wo

Intervention and social breakdown in the elderly.

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the ethical and clinical issues associated with the management of social breakdown in the elderly (SBE) in relation to the case of a 76-year-old recluse who was referred following community concerns about her living conditions and behaviour. METHOD: Longitudinal assessment and management of the patient resulted in a diagnosis of schizophrenia and treatment with fluphenazine decanoate. RESULTS: The patient responded to treatment and was returned home, after which a relationship was maintained by community services. CONCLUSIONS: A coherent and defensible position on both

Mandibular and postpharyngeal gland secretions of Acromyrmex landolti (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) as chemical cues for nestmate recognition.

Nestmate recognition is fundamental for the cohesiveness of the colony in social insects. Acromyrmex landolti is a higher Attini, a leaf-cutter ant with largest nest and morphological castes. We studied the location of the recognition signal of A. landolti on the whole ant body, the isolation effect on the capacity of nestmate recognition, and the role of the mandibular (MG) and post-pharyngeal glands (PPG) as putative sources for chemical recognition signals in this species. We performed behavioral bioassays and chemical analyses of MG and PPG glands; MG volatiles in different castes were als

Who is afraid of Hermy and Jimmy? Relating to and normalizing psychosis through theater.

OBJECTIVE: Psychotic experiences, such as hearing voices that others do not hear, being afraid of threats that others do not perceive, or believing in ideas that others find implausible can be confusing for those who face them and challenging to relate to for those who do not, leading to alienation and social exclusion. The objective of this article is to discuss how immersion in theater can enhance our understanding of human nature and facilitate a social environment that supports the recovery of individuals with psychosis. METHODS: Drawing on theories of the psychology of art and narrative

Social Isolation, Related Constructs and Problematic School Attendance Problems in Adolescence: A Systematic Review.

Background: Problematic school attendance in adolescence is a heterogeneous phenomenon with academic, emotional, and developmental consequences. Although relational factors are increasingly recognised, the literature remains conceptually fragmented, with overlapping constructs such as social isolation, loneliness, social withdrawal, and peer difficulties examined under partially distinct frameworks. Objective: This systematic review aimed to synthesize empirical evidence on the association between social isolation, related constructs, and problematic school attendance during adolescence. Metho

Psychological correlates of idiopathic intracranial hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension, also known as pseudotumor cerebri, is a relatively rare disorder of increased intracranial pressure >250 mm water, with a normal neuroimaging and normal cerebrospinal fluid content. OBJECTIVES: To examine whether hostility, anxiety and autobiographical memory (a correlate of depression) are associated with IIH. METHODS: Using a case-control cross sectional design, 20 patients with IIH were compared with 9 healthy controls of similar age, weight and height, and 11 headache controls. Patients were assessed for hostility and anxiety. The Autobio

Adult attachment style. I: Its relationship to clinical depression.

BACKGROUND: Although there are an increasing number of studies showing an association of adult attachment style to depressive disorder, such studies have rarely utilised epidemiological approaches with large community-based series and have relied heavily on brief self-report measurement of both attachment style and symptoms. The result is a wide inconsistency in the type of insecure style shown to relate to disorder. The present study examined adult attachment style in a high-risk community sample of women in relation to clinical depression. It utilised an interview measure of adult attachment

Transsexualism and physical deformity.

This is the first published case study of a transsexual male with a rare orthopedic condition whose transsexualism was directly related to his severe orthopedic disability. In 1976, the patient, a 28-year-old single Caucasian male with a college education, was diagnosed as having progressive pseudorheumatoid arthrotropy of children (a very rare orthopedic disorder which also affected his sister). At this writing, he is 4 feet 9 inches tall and has multiple skeletal deformities, including twisted and gnarled joints; he wears braces on both legs, has had total hip replacements, is barrel chested

Sociocultural factors in the psychiatric assessment of black patients: a case study.

Accurately diagnosing psychiatric disorders in black patients has been a controversial subject. Criticism has been made that blacks are more likely to receive a diagnosis of psychosis, eg, paranoid schizophrenia. With proper use of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM III), the author anticipates greater diagnostic accuracy with blacks. The multiaxial perspectives of DSM III, particularly axis IV, help resolve some critical aspects of diagnostic difficulties. This case illustrates the diagnostic errors frequently made when variables of culture, ethnicity, and psychoso

Extensive immunolesions of basal forebrain cholinergic system impair offspring recognition in sheep.

The involvement of the basal forebrain cholinergic system has been extensively investigated in instrumental learning but little is known of its participation in social memory, especially in the memorization of individual traits of a conspecific. The present study tested in sheep its contribution to both instrumental learning and individual offspring recognition. Six weeks before parturition, ewes received injections of a specific cholinergic immunotoxin (ME20.4 IgG-saporin) into the lateral ventricles (150 microg) and in some cases additional immunotoxin injections into the nucleus basalis (11

Desire for a sense of power and religious suicide in psychobiographical research: combining personality and sociocultural theories.

The article presents two theoretical perspectives that provide a helpful framework in psychobiographical research, especially when psychobiographies concern religious suicide. The first is typical in contemporary psychology, a subjective analysis focused on the individual, looking at life course/lifetime in the light of personality psychology. The second one is represented by anthropological research on the concept of honour-shame and the sociological works of E. Durkheim. Contemporary psychobiography should consider sociocultural context and refer to social sciences (anthropology, sociology).

Adaptation and psychometric evaluation of the revised social constraints scale for partners of adults with cancer.

BACKGROUND: Partners of adults with cancer often experience social constraints that limit their ability to express cancer-related thoughts, feelings, and concerns to their loved ones. However, no validated instrument is currently available in Simplified Chinese to assess partner-specific social constraints. This study aimed to culturally adapt and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Simplified Chinese version of the Social Constraints Scale for partners of adults with cancer (SC-SCS-P). METHODS: The scale was developed using a two-phase approach. In the first phase, items from the exi

Social Stigma Associated with COVID-19 in Healthcare Workers: A Concept Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the presence of "COVID-19-related social stigma" in health literature, there is no clear definition of this concept in healthcare setting. It is often confused with related terms such as shame, discrimination, and prejudice, leading to imprecise research questions and ineffective evaluations. The aim of this study was to elucidate the concept of social stigma associated with COVID-19 in healthcare workers using Rodgers' evolutionary concept analysis method. METHODS: Rodgers' evolutionary method of concept analysis was employed to clarify COVID-19-related social stigma in

Immigrants' Increasing Depression Disadvantage in Older Ages: Patterns and Mechanisms.

Despite evidence of immigrants' mental health advantage over natives, it remains unclear how this advantage evolves over the life course and what mechanisms underlie it. Using 28 years of longitudinal data from the Health and Retirement Study (1992-2020), this study shows that immigrants report lower levels of depression than natives in their 50s; however, this advantage declines with age and reverses around the mid-60s, when immigrants exhibit higher levels of depression. The pattern holds across ethnoracial and gender groups. Analyses of premigration and postmigration factors suggest that ch
