Effects of moderate prenatal ethanol exposure and age on social behavior, spatial response perseveration errors and motor behavior.

Persistent deficits in social behavior are among the major negative consequences associated with exposure to ethanol during prenatal development. Prior work from our laboratory has linked deficits in social behavior following moderate prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) in the rat to functional alterations in the ventrolateral frontal cortex [21]. In addition to social behaviors, the regions comprising the ventrolateral frontal cortex are critical for diverse processes ranging from orofacial motor movements to flexible alteration of behavior in the face of changing consequences. The broader behavi

Effects of diet and behavior therapy on social and motor behavior of retarded phenylketonuric adults: an experimental analysis.

The effects of a low phenylalanine diet on six retarded phenylketonuric adults were assessed. An ABA individual-subject design was used in experiment I to assess the effects of a low phenylalanine diet on social and motor behavior. Following a baseline during which the subjects ingested a normal phenylalanine diet (phase A), a low phenylalanine diet (phase B) was administered in a double blind fashion. Finally, the baseline condition (phase A) was reinstated (normal diet). The low phenylalanine diet resulted in few significant behavioral changes for those subjects with which proper methodologi

Coronary disease-prone behavior among Japanese men: job-centered lifestyle and social dominance. Type A Behavior Pattern Conference.

In Japan the type A behavior pattern, particularly its component of hostility, is known to have less value as a risk for coronary artery disease (CAD) than in the United States. We developed a questionnaire (Japanese Coronary-prone Behavior Scale [JCBS]) to investigate the behavioral correlates with CAD among contemporary Japanese persons. The JCBS was administered to 419 Japanese men undergoing coronary angiography; 310 of them had angiographic or clinical evidence or both of CAD, and 109 had no evidence of CAD. The group with CAD had more coronary risk factors than the group without CAD, but

Maternal Exposure to Witnessed Social Defeat Stress Induces Sex-Specific Disruptions in Juvenile Social Play Behavior in Rats.

Stressing rodent dams during lactation can impair offspring neurodevelopment, altering behavioral and physiological outcomes. Witnessed social defeat stress (WSDS) is a paradigm in which a juvenile or adult rodent observes aggressive encounters, affecting stress physiology and behavior. We developed a novel early-life stress model by exposing lactating rat dams to WSDS and assessed its impact on juvenile social behavior and stress-related physiology. At postnatal day 24, same-sex, age-matched pairs of offspring were tested for social play by scoring pouncing (play initiation), pinning, chasing

How to run round-robin social interaction studies: A tutorial for the efficient capture of natural social behavior.

The study of natural social behavior is a frontier discipline in psychology. Although such work is highly necessary for advancing and refining theories of social behavior, social cognition, evolutionary psychology, relationships, and more, researchers rarely commit to such intensive research designs due to the anticipated effort involved. In particular, to understand social behavior as it naturally unfolds, scientists must be able to collect and handle a high volume of rich social data efficiently, effectively, and reproducibly. Moreover, because social behavior is highly individualistic and c

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM SOCIAL ISOLATION ON MEMORY AND DEPRESSIVE-LIKE BEHAVIOR IN RATS OF DIFFERENT SOCIAL STATUS.

Prolonged social isolation constitutes a potent chronic stressor capable of inducing behavioral and neurochemical alterations associated with anxiety, depression, and cognitive dysfunction. In rodent models, dominant and submissive individuals exhibit distinct behavioral and neuroendocrine responses under conditions of social stress. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of 30 days of social isolation on depressive-like and anxiety-like behaviors, as well as cognitive performance, in rats with differing social status. Experiments were conducted on 20 groups of white laboratory rats (

Voluntary wheel running ameliorates abnormalities in social behavior induced by social isolation: Involvement of neural and neurochemical responses.

Social isolation (SI) can lead to devastating behavioral effects. Increasing evidence has demonstrated that physical activity can improve sociability and brain functions, but whether voluntary exercise can ameliorate SI-induced abnormalities in social behavior and its underlying neuronal mechanisms remains unknown. The present study found that SI during adulthood increased aggression in the resident-intruder test and motivation for social exploration in the three-chamber test. Voluntary wheel running (VWR) could reverse the alterations in social behavior induced by SI in male mice. In addition

Screen Use and Emotional, Behavioral, and Social Development in Children.

IMPORTANCE: The association between electronic screen use and psychosocial development in children remains unclear. Few studies account for longitudinal associations or fully adjust for key covariates such as family functioning. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the cross-sectional association between screen use and psychosocial development at 5, 10, and 15 years of age and the longitudinal association between screen use at 5 years of age and psychosocial development at 10 and 15 years of age. Atypical social behaviors in mouse models for Rett syndrome.

Social behavior depends on neural circuits that encode social identity, memory, and motivational value. These processes engage coordinated activity across hippocampal subregions, medial prefrontal cortex, thalamic and hypothalamic nuclei, as well as the mesocorticolimbic dopaminergic systems that regulate internal state, hierarchy, and social reward. In Rett syndrome and MeCP2-deficient rodent models, basic sociability is often preserved, alongside impairments in social memory, dominance behavior, aggression control, and flexible social responding, frequently accompanied by anxiety-like and se

Kids These Days: Social Media's Influence on Adolescent Behaviors.

We live in an electronic world with near-ubiquitous access to smartphones and social media. One consequence of this new reality is that children and teenagers may be unduly swayed by social media influencers who promote skincare products and practices, colloquially referred to as "skinfluencers," and enjoy unfettered access to emerging trends-not all of which lead to positive results. Herein, we describe two cases of adolescents presenting to a pediatric dermatology department after trying different beauty trends endorsed by social media influencers. The first patient developed allergic contac

Computational characterization of the behavior of a saliva droplet in a social environment.

The conduct of respiratory droplets is the basis of the study to reduce the spread of a virus in society. The pandemic suffered in early 2020 due to COVID-19 shows the lack of research on the evaporation and fate of droplets exhaled in the environment. The current study, attempts to provide solution through computational fluid dynamics techniques based on a multiphase state with the help of Eulerian-Lagrangian techniques to the activity of respiratory droplets. A numerical study has shown how the behavior of droplets of pure water exhaled in the environment after a sneeze or cough have a dynam

A Critical Review of the Social and Behavioral Contributions to the Overdose Epidemic.

More than 750,000 people in the United States died from an overdose between 1999 and 2018; two-thirds of those deaths involved an opioid. In this review, we present trends in opioid overdose rates during this period and discuss how the proliferation of opioid prescribing to treat chronic pain, changes in the heroin and illegally manufactured opioid synthetics markets, and social factors, including deindustrialization and concentrated poverty, contributed to the rise of the overdose epidemic. We also examine how current policies implemented to address the overdose epidemic may have contributed

Saliency modulates behavioral strategies in response to social comparison.

Social comparison has been found to affect humans in many aspects including outcome evaluation, emotional reaction, and decision-making. Here, two experiments were conducted using a gambling task involving monetary gains and losses (absolute outcome: win/loss), whereby participants' outcome was either better or worse than the outcome of a paired player (relative outcome: better/worse). The results of experiment 1 showed that participants switched more frequently after absolute losses compared with absolute gains, consistent with previous studies showing a win-stay lose-shift heuristic in repea

Dynamic and social behaviors of human pluripotent stem cells.

Human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) can self-renew or differentiate to diverse cell types, thus providing a platform for basic and clinical applications. However, pluripotent stem cell populations are heterogeneous and functional properties at the single cell level are poorly documented leading to inefficiencies in differentiation and concerns regarding reproducibility and safety. Here, we use non-invasive time-lapse imaging to continuously examine hPSC maintenance and differentiation and to predict cell viability and fate. We document dynamic behaviors and social interactions that prospectiv

Dairy cattle exploratory and social behaviors: is there an effect of cloning?

While an increasing number of animals are produced by means of somatic cloning, behavioral studies on cloned animals are still rare. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the somatic cloning procedure has an influence on locomotion, exploratory, vocal and social behaviors of heifers. Ten heifers were used in the present study. Five of them were cloned heifers derived from somatic cells of three different Prim'Holstein cows and five others were same-age control heifers produced by artificial insemination. In addition to observations of social behaviors in the stable group, each anima

[Cognitive-behavioral therapy for treatment of social anxiety disorder].

There is good evidence for the effectiveness of exposure-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in the treatment of social anxiety disorder (SAD). In this article, the Clark's cognitive model of SAD is presented, followed by the description of general CBT strategies, such as the shift from internal to external attention and the correction of anticipatory/postevent processing. Typical schemata in SAD and comorbid avoidant personality disorder are then illustrated, along with schema-focused approaches. Finally, a four-step CBT for SAD is suggested.

Reading development and impairment: behavioral, social, and neurobiological factors.

What are the cognitive and neurobiological building blocks necessary for children to acquire literacy, a skill that is crucial for academic and life achievement? In this review we discuss the behavioral and neurobiological evidence concerning the bases of reading development and impairment. The means by which reading achievement may be influenced by the background and experiences that a child brings to the classroom are discussed. Finally, we review a series of experimental studies that have examined the cognitive and neurobiological response prior to and following reading intervention in stru

A multilevel analysis of the interpersonal behavior of socially anxious people.

We investigate the interpersonal behavior of socially anxious (SA) and non-socially anxious (NSA) individuals at three different levels of analysis, focusing on the dimensions of warmth and dominance. Study 1 examines self-reported general interaction styles, Study 2 explores behavior occurring within the context of a single interaction, and in Study 3 we focus on the performance of a single conversational act (a disagreement). Studies 1 and 2 adopt the framework of Interpersonal Circumplex Theory (IPC; Kiesler, 1983), which is well suited for studying trait-level and interaction-level social

Cognitive-behavioral treatment of social phobia: new advances.

Cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) for social phobia is an effective treatment for many patients, but some patients do not benefit from the treatments and many remain symptomatic. Therefore, researchers have been examining techniques that may improve treatment outcome. In this paper, recent psychopathology and treatment outcome research, much of which supports the expectation that a second-generation CBT treatment may further improve outcome, are discussed. Finally, the authors present a number of CBT techniques that are tailored for the individual treatment of patients with social phobia. T

The Emotional, Social, and Behavioral Implications of Insulin-Induced Hypoglycemia.

Hypoglycemic episodes occur commonly in patients with insulin-dependent (Type I) diabetes and are associated with several negative sequelae. These include unpleasant symptoms, deterioration in cognitive-motor functions, embarrassment, accidents, unconsciousness, seizures, and even death. Although hypoglycemic disruptions in cognitive and motor function caused by neuroglycopenia are well-documented, the effects of hypoglycemia on other areas of psychosocial function have received less scientific attention. This paper examines the impact of hypoglycemia on emotional status, social behavior, and
