Alteration in the psychologic status and family environment of pregnant women before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVE: To compare mental distress and COVID-19-related family environment changes among pregnant women before and during the pandemic. METHODS: In a survey-based study in Lishui City, Zhejiang, China, pregnant women were recruited before (March-December, 2019; n = 2657) and during (January-August, 2020; n = 689) the COVID-19 pandemic. They completed the Symptom Check List-90 Revised (SCL90-R) questionnaire and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and were asked about their families via the Family Environment Scale (FES). RESULTS: Higher SCL90-R scores of somatization (P = 0.003), depre

Thinking Outside the Nation: Cognitive Flexibility's Role in National Identity Inclusiveness as a Marker of Majority Group Acculturation.

In superdiverse societies like Canada, characterized by high levels of cultural and ethnic plurality, national identity boundaries are often blurry. While policies may officially promote inclusiveness, public discourse on national identity is frequently dominated by mainstream groups, whose willingness to expand these boundaries plays a crucial role in fostering minority inclusion. Despite the importance of inclusivity for social cohesion, little is known about what enables majority group members to adopt a more inclusive national identity. This study addresses this gap by exploring the role o

The Relationship between Parental Perception of Neighborhood Collective Efficacy and Physical Violence by Parents against Preschool Children: A Cross-Sectional Study in a County of China.

Children exposed to negative neighborhood environments are at high risk of experiencing violence. This study aimed to explore the effects of parental perception of neighborhood collective efficacy on parental physical violence (PV) to their preschool children in a county of China. A total of 1337 parents from nine kindergartens were recruited by the stratified random cluster sampling method. Data about parental PV behavior toward children during the past three months, parental perception of neighborhood collective efficacy, together with their attitudes towards the use of corporal punishment t

Small Group Process and Outcome Research Highlights: A 25-Year Perspective.

We summarize major research findings from the past 25 years within the larger evolution of group psychotherapy. Small group process findings are highlighted from a group-as-a-whole, interpersonal relation, subgroup, individual member characteristics, and leader perspective. Special emphasis is given to cohesion and the significant correlation between cohesion and outcome. We note that group therapy is an empirically well-supported treatment for a large number of psychiatric disorders and describe evidence supporting the outcome of various theoretical orientations. Key studies showing outcome e

Barring progress: The influence of paternal incarceration on families' neighborhood attainment.

A growing body of literature has recognized that incarceration has implications beyond the offender, with detrimental effects reverberating onto families. In this study, we use the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 3288) to investigate the relationships between paternal incarceration and the neighborhood outcomes of the children of incarcerated fathers and their mothers. Specifically, we examine whether children whose fathers are currently and/or have recently been incarcerated experience more residential instability, live in more socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods, an

Latina young adults' use of health care during initial months in the United States.

We examined social ecological predictors of health care utilization among Latina young adults during their initial year after immigration to the United States. Participants were 530 Latinas (ages 18-23) who immigrated to Miami-Dade County, Florida, 11.5 months before assessment. We used multiple logistic regression to test predictors of health care usage. Approximately 36% utilized care. Dimensions of marianismo differentially associated with usage. Usage also was more likely for participants who reported more social network attachment, better health, greater neighborhood cohesion, and possess

American gun ownership and the ingroup/outgroup divide.

American protective gun ownership privatizes collective behavior, transmuting the role of the state to keep citizens safe into individual actions to protect one's family and one's immediate community. In doing so, owners may sharpen the ingroup/outgroup divide into those who need protection and those who need to be protected against. Using nationally representative individual-level data from the General Social Survey, we find that American gun owners have friendship structures that are more ingroup-focused than nonowners: more cohesive (more of owners' friends are friends with each other) and

Cohesive discourse in pervasive developmental disorders.

Investigated the use of cohesive links to create a reciprocal conversation in individuals with autism, Asperger syndrome, and a control group of children and adolescents with nonspecific social problems. All subjects engaged in a 10-minute conversation with an examiner that touched on various topics. The conversation was audiotaped, transcribed, and coded blindly for several types of cohesive links. Compared to controls, the higher functioning autistic group referred less to a previous stretch of the conversation and more to an aspect of the physical environment. The Asperger group, on the oth

Correlates of verbal and physical violence experienced and perpetrated among cisgender college women: serial cross-sections during one year of the COVID-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Violence against women is a prevalent, preventable public health crisis. COVID-19 stressors and pandemic countermeasures may have exacerbated violence against women. Cisgender college women are particularly vulnerable to violence. Thus, we examined the prevalence and correlates of verbal/physical violence experienced and perpetrated among cisgender women enrolled at a New York City college over one year during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: From a prospective cohort study, we analyzed data self-reported quarterly (T1, T2, T3, T4) between December 2020 and December 2021. Using g

Associations of internet access with social integration, wellbeing and physical activity among adults in deprived communities: evidence from a household survey.

BACKGROUND: There are arguments for and against the wellbeing effects of internet use, with evidence shifting from negative to positive over time, although the effects are partly dependent upon the population sub-group concerned. There are good grounds for anticipating that the internet could be beneficial to people living in deprived communities, but this group has rarely been studied. METHODS: Data are from a cross-sectional, face-to-face survey of adult householders (n = 3804) in 15 deprived communities in Glasgow, UK. Respondents were asked whether they used the internet and, if so, how t

Validity of a scale of neighbourhood informal social control relevant to pre-schoolers' physical activity: A cross-sectional study.

Childhood physical activity (PA) is important for health across the lifespan. Time pre-schoolers spend outdoors, which has been associated with more PA, is likely influenced by parents' perception of neighbourhood informal social control relevant to pre-schoolers' PA, defined as the willingness of neighbours to intervene to ensure social order and a safe community environment for young children's active play. To advance measurement of this construct, we assessed factorial and construct validities of the PA-related neighbourhood informal social control scale for parents of pre-schoolers (PANISC

Assessing Internal States In Children With Neuromuscular Disorders Through An Oral Narrative Task.

OBJECTIVE: Neuromuscular disorders (NMD) are rare, chronic diseases affecting muscle and nerve function, leading to motor, cognitive, and socio-emotional challenges. While physical and cognitive aspects have been widely studied, socio-emotional functioning remains underexplored. This study assessed the feasibility of using invented oral stories to examine internal state language in children with NMD compared to typically developing peers. METHOD: Forty 5-12 years old children (20 with NMD, 20 typically developing) spontaneously narrated fictional stories, analyzed for structure, cohesion, and

Psychological burdens are associated with young male transsexuals in Korea.

The purpose of this study was to compare differences of the psychological burdens between young male transsexuals and age-gender matched non-transsexuals with standardized psychiatric rating scales in Korea. A total of 43 biologically unrelated young male transsexuals and 49 age-gender matched non-transsexuals participated in the study. All subjects completed Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI), Social Avoidance and Distress Scale (SADS), Self-Esteem Scale (SES) and Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (FACES-III). The transsexuals showed significantly higher scores on the BDI (P <

Childhood antecedents of psychological adaptation to military life.

This study examined the impact of a history of childhood abuse and neglect on soldiers' adaptation to Army life including commitment to the Army, confidence in leaders, and perceptions of unit cohesion and readiness. Childhood abuse and neglect were measured by the 30-item Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) which comprises four subscales-sexual abuse, physical-emotional abuse, emotional neglect, and physical neglect. Information was obtained through a survey of 1,051 male soldiers and 305 female soldiers from combat support and combat service support units located at three different Army pos

"Nature is there; its free": Urban greenspace and the social determinants of health of immigrant families.

In this article, we draw on a 2012 Montreal-based study that examined the embodied, every day practices of immigrant children and families in the context of urban greenspaces such as parks, fields, backyards, streetscapes, gardens, forests and rivers. Results suggest that activities in the natural environment serve as a protective factor in the health and well-being of this population, providing emotional and physical nourishment in the face of adversity. Using the Social Determinants of Health model adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO, 1998), we analyze how participants accessed urb

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Depressive Symptoms Among Older Korean Americans in Affordable Senior Housing: The Moderating Role of Social Networks and Family Solidarity.

Despite growing evidence of the long-term mental health effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), little is known about protective factors that buffer this relationship among older adults. This study examined personal (e.g., sense of mastery), interpersonal (e.g., social networks and family solidarity), and community (e.g., social cohesion) resources as potential moderators of the association between ACEs and depressive symptoms among older Korean Americans residing in affordable senior housing. Survey data from 315 residents (mean age = 79.4) revealed significant interactions between A

Not just 'Asian' but Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Chinese, and mixed Asian American: Examining depression in an ethnically heterogenous sample of Asian American young adults.

To date, most research focused on depression prevalence is with adolescents or adults and focuses mainly on risk factors, with few studies assessing factors related to depression for Asian American young adults. Using longitudinal data collected from web-based surveys administered over a 5-year period (wave 10: 2017-2018; wave 14: 2021-2022; and wave 15:2022-2023) on 460 young adults (22-28 years old at wave 15) who identify as Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Chinese, and mixed Asian American, we examined associations between risk and protective factors, such as discrimination, prior depression, s

Anti-Predator Strategies in Fish with Contrasting Shoaling Preferences Across Different Contexts.

In freshwater fish, group behavior is ecologically critical for daily activities such as predator avoidance. However, species with varying shoaling preferences exhibit divergent behavioral responses under different environmental conditions. This study investigated the behavioral responses of three shoaling species (Moenkhausia costae, Puntius tetrazona, and Myxocyprinus asiaticus) and three non-shoaling species (Trichogaster trichopterus, Micropterus salmoides, and Cichlasoma managuense) to simulated predation in either an open arena or a six-arm maze with shelter available. Our findings revea
