Exploring the Participation Patterns and Impact of Environment in Preschool Children with ASD.

Participation in everyday activities at home and in the community is essential for children's development and well-being. Limited information exists about participation patterns of preschool children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study examines these participation patterns in both the home and community, and the extent to which environmental factors and social communication abilities are associated with participation. Fifty-four parents of preschool-aged children with ASD completed the Participation and Environment Measure for Young Children and the Autism Classification System of

Social use of language in children with reactive attachment disorder and autism spectrum disorders.

Children with a diagnosis of reactive attachment disorder (RAD) appear to show difficulties in social understanding. We aimed to compare the pragmatic language functioning of children with (RAD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Assessments were made in three groups of children aged 5-8 years, with verbal IQ estimates in the normal range: 35 with a RAD diagnosis, 52 with an ASD diagnosis and 39 with typical development. The Children's Communication Checklist (CCC) was used to compare their pragmatic language skills, and ADI-R algorithms were used to compare autistic symptomatology, according

Involvement and regulation of the left anterior cingulate cortex in the ultrasonic communication deficits of autistic mice.

INTRODUCTION: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a group of diseases often characterized by poor sociability and challenges in social communication. The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is a core brain region for social function. Whether it contributes to the defects of social communication in ASD and whether it could be physiologically modulated to improve social communication have been poorly investigated. This study is aimed at addressing these questions. METHODS: Fragile X mental retardation 1 (FMR1) mutant and valproic acid (VPA)-induced ASD mice were used. Male-female social interaction w

Regulation of Social Recognition Memory in the Hippocampal Circuits.

Social recognition memory reflects the ability of the social animals to recognize and remember familiar individuals of the same species. The unique ability for mammals to recognize conspecifics is essential and beneficial when animals conduct daily social activities. This brief review summarizes a brain network underlying social recognition memory and explores the possible relationships between social isolation and social recognition memory. Finally, we introduce some possible related molecular mechanisms underlying social recognition memory. These findings help us explore potential targeting

[Mental disorders in the dental practice. Autism spectrum disorder].

Autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disorder with a prevalence of about 1% of the population. This disorder, characterised by limitations in the domain of social communication, interaction, flexibility and processing stimuli, often requires additional attention in the dental practice. The disorder can have an effect on both general health and oral health as a result of unusual eating habits, problems with oral hygiene, the use of psychotropic medications or a vitamin D deficiency. The treatment of patients with an autism spectrum disorder generally also requires more time and patience

Comorbidity and social phobia: evidence from clinical, epidemiologic, and genetic studies.

This paper reviews evidence from clinical, epidemiologic, and family studies regarding the association between social phobia and other syndromes. Social phobia is strongly associated with other anxiety disorders, substance abuse, and affective disorders in both clinical and community samples. An average of 80% of social phobics identified in community samples meet diagnostic criteria for another lifetime condition. Social phobia is most strongly associated with other subtypes of anxiety disorders, with an average of 50% of social phobics in the community reporting a concomitant anxiety disorde

Refining the classification of children with selective mutism: a latent profile analysis.

The goal of this study was to develop an empirically derived classification system for selective mutism (SM) using parent-report measures of social anxiety, behavior problems, and communication delays. The sample consisted of parents of 130 children (ages 5-12) with SM. Results from latent profile analysis supported a 3-class solution made up of an anxious-mildly oppositional group, an anxious-communication delayed group, and an exclusively anxious group. Follow-up tests indicated significant group differences on measures of SM symptom severity, externalizing problems, and expressive/receptive

Communication and Language Skills of Autistic Spectrum Disorders in Children and Their Parents' Emotions.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability, which is a biologically based neurodevelopmental disorder that affects a child's social interaction and communication skills. Core deficits are identified in two domains: social communication/interaction and restrictive, repetitive patterns of behavior. Children and youth with ASD have service needs in behavioral, educational, health, leisure, family support, and other areas. Autism is a set of heterogeneous neurodevelopmental conditions, characterized by inability to acquire social skills, repetitive behaviors and failu

Do clinically anxious children cluster according to their expression of factors that maintain child anxiety?

BACKGROUND: Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for childhood anxiety disorders, yet a significant proportion of children do not benefit from it. CBT for child anxiety disorders typically includes a range of strategies that may not all be applicable for all affected children. This study explored whether there are distinct subgroups of children with anxiety disorders who are characterized by their responses to measures of the key mechanisms that are targeted in CBT (i.e. interpretation bias, perceived control, avoidance, physiological arousal, and social communication).

Transdiagnostic associations between subjective gesture behaviour and objective performance in schizophrenia and depression.

Social communication deficits are common across mental-health disorders, yet little is known about how individuals perceive their own gesture behaviours. Gaining insight into this, particularly across different disorders, could enhance our understanding of social communicative impairments and disruptions in self-awareness. The current study included 274 participants: N = 113 with schizophrenia, N = 65 with depression and N = 96 healthy controls where we compared self-reported gesture behaviours in social and non-social contexts. These self-reports where further explored in relation to objectiv

Distinguishing autism spectrum disorder and social anxiety: Exploring adaptive skills among university students.

High comorbidity and diagnostic overlap between autism spectrum disorder and social anxiety disorder have been documented. We examined if differences in adaptive behavior, essential for daily functioning, could differentiate these conditions among young university students. Eighty-eight autistic and 123 non-autistic undergraduates were categorized into four groups: autistic individuals: with low (n = 26)/high (n = 62) social anxiety (SA) symptoms; non-autistic: with low (n = 63)/high (n = 60) SA. The Adaptive Behavior Assessment System (ABAS) was utilized to assess three domains of adaptive sk

Social communication in fragile X syndrome: pilot examination of the Brief Observation of Social Communication Change (BOSCC).

BACKGROUND: Social communication is a key area of difficulty in fragile X syndrome (FXS) and there are not yet adequate outcome measurement tools. Appropriate outcome measures for FXS have been identified as a key area of research interest in order to evaluate future therapeutic trials. The Brief Observation of Social Communication Change-Minimally Verbal (BOSCC-MV), an outcome measure with strong psychometrics developed for autism spectrum disorder, has promise as an outcome measure to assess social communication change with FXS participants. METHODS: We examined the BOSCC-MV via central cod

What Can Eye Movements Tell Us about Subtle Cognitive Processing Differences in Autism?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is neurodevelopmental condition principally characterised by impairments in social interaction and communication, and repetitive behaviours and interests. This article reviews the eye movement studies designed to investigate the underlying sampling or processing differences that might account for the principal characteristics of autism. Following a brief summary of a previous review chapter by one of the authors of the current paper, a detailed review of eye movement studies investigating various aspects of processing in autism over the last decade will be presen

Effects of amphetamine on pro-social ultrasonic communication in juvenile rats: Implications for mania models.

Communication is the act of information transfer between sender and receiver. In rats, vocal communication can be studied through ultrasonic vocalizations (USV). 50-kHz USV occur in appetitive situations, most notably juvenile play, likely expressing the sender׳s positive affective state. Such appetitive 50-kHz USV serve important pro-social communicative functions and elicit social exploratory and approach behavior in the receiver. Emission of 50-kHz USV can be induced pharmacologically by the administration of psychostimulant drugs, such as amphetamine. However, it is unknown whether ampheta

Randomized Controlled Trial of Developmental Reciprocity Treatment in Young Children with Autism.

Developmental social pragmatic interventions for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) focus on development of strong interpersonal relationships by encouraging social communication during joint play routines. The goal of the current investigation was to conduct a randomized controlled 24-week pilot trial to examine the efficacy of a Developmental Reciprocity Treatment package (DRT-P), a developmentally-based intervention that includes both parent training and direct treatment with the child, compared to a delayed treatment group (DTG). Thirty-seven children aged 2-5 years with ASD and language delay
