Exercise addiction, social interaction, and the moderating effects of disordered eating among adults aged 18-35.

Physical exercise is beneficial to physical health and social well-being. However, with extreme volumes, exercise may lead to addiction symptoms comparable with substance use and gambling disorders. Social dysfunction is a crucial element that constitutes exercise addiction (EA), which is commonly referred to the conflicts with significant others. Nonetheless, it remains unclear if EA also correlates with other social interaction aspects. This study aimed to determine the relationships between EA risk and different dimensions of social interaction while examining the moderation of eating disor

Can Social Anxiety Impact Facial Emotion Recognition in Schizophrenia?

Social anxiety is highly prevalent in individuals with schizophrenia, with studies suggesting rates of 30%. This study aimed at determining if social anxiety is linked to specific emotion recognition deficits and to specific social functioning deficits. A total of 47 participants with a diagnosis of schizophrenia and receiving outpatient services answered measures of facial recognition (Ekman; Facial Emotion Identification Test), facial discrimination (Facial Emotion Discrimination Test), role-play, social anxiety (Social Interaction Anxiety Scale and Brief Social Phobia Scale), psychiatric sy

Racial and Ethnic Differences in Everyday Discrimination Measures in a National Sample of U.S. Adults.

BACKGROUND: Everyday discrimination is a pervasive social stressor that has been linked to adverse health outcomes and contributes to persistent health inequities in the United States. Understanding contemporary patterns of discrimination across racial and ethnic groups remains an important public health priority. Our study examined racial and ethnic differences in multiple forms of everyday discrimination among U.S. adults. METHODS: Data were drawn from the 2023 National Health Interview Survey, a national U.S. sample of non-institutionalized adults aged ≥ 18 years. The analytic sample inclu

The Role of Stigma and Resilience in Healthcare Engagement Among Transgender Latinas in the U.S. South: Baseline Findings from the ChiCAS Study.

Research demonstrates that stigma and resilience influence transgender peoples' healthcare use. Less is known about transgender Latinas in the U.S. South who face multilevel barriers to healthcare access. We used baseline data from the ChiCAS intervention study. Using logistic regression, we examined how stigma (perceived discrimination related to gender identity, race/ethnicity, sexual behavior and perceived documentation status and internalized transphobia), and resilience (ethnic group pride and social support) are associated with two healthcare outcomes (use of routine medical care and med

HIV and intersectional stigma among people living with HIV and healthcare workers and antiretroviral therapy adherence in the Dominican Republic.

BACKGROUND: HIV-related stigma, discrimination, and social marginalization undermines optimal HIV care outcomes. More research examining the impact of HIV-related stigma, discrimination, other interlocking forms of oppression, and antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence is needed to optimize HIV treatment programming. This study uses data from two clinics in the Dominican Republic to examine client and healthcare worker (HCW) perceptions of HIV and intersectional stigmas among people living with HIV. METHODS: Surveys exploring demographics, HIV-related stigma, various dimensions of discriminat

Healthcare inequity in mpox testing intention: A socioeconomic status-stratified path analysis of medical discrimination and distrust among men who have sex with men in China.

BACKGROUND: Global mpox outbreaks have exposed healthcare inequities in testing accessibility. Socioeconomic disparities and medical discrimination and distrust influence testing service utilization among vulnerable populations. We examined how medical discrimination and distrust affect testing intention across socioeconomic strata among men who have sex with men (MSM) in China. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide cross-sectional study across six regions of China (November 2023 to March 2024). MSM aged ≥ 18 years who reported male sexual partners within previous six months were recruited throu

Gender discrimination and depressive symptoms among child-bearing women: ELSPAC-CZ cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Depression is approximately two-fold more prevalent among women than men. Social theories suggest that discrimination is a pathway through which gender inequalities affect women's lives, but data are lacking. This cohort study evaluates whether perceived gender discrimination is linked to depressive symptoms among child-bearing women. METHODS: Data were obtained from 4,688 participants enrolled in pregnancy in 1991-92 in the European Longitudinal Cohort Study of Pregnancy and Childhood, Czech Republic. Perceived gender discrimination was assessed in mid-pregnancy, year seven, and

Global Perspectives on the Health and Social Impacts of Child Trafficking.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Survivors of child sex trafficking (CST) experience many health and social sequelae as a result of stigma, discrimination, and barriers to health care. Our objective was to obtain a cross-cultural understanding of these barriers and to explore the relationship between stigmatization and health outcomes through application of the Health Stigma and Discrimination Framework (HSDF). METHODS: In-depth, semistructured interviews were conducted with 45 recognized CST expert service providers. Interview data were analyzed using established content analysis procedures and ap

Intersectional inequalities in interpersonal discrimination in outpatient care according to sex, history of migration, and income in Germany.

Experiences of interpersonal discrimination in outpatient care (e.g. being treated disrespectfully) are a frequent phenomenon in Germany and in other countries. It can be expected that such experiences contribute to the production and perpetuation of health inequalities. We explored intersectional inequalities in interpersonal discrimination in outpatient care according to sex, history of migration, and income. Analyses were based on an online survey in a random sample of the adult population in Germany (n = 3246). A modified version of the Everyday Discrimination Scale was used to assess freq

To understand adolescents' daily experiences and reactions to vicarious discrimination as well as the role of parent and friend support in these dynamics, this study used a 14-day daily diary research design to examine the daily experiences of vicarious discrimination on adolescents' emotional (i.e., depressed, anxious, angry, positive moods) and cognitive-affective reactions (i.e., perceived safety stress, trouble fitting in with peers). Participants (N = 145) included 10th- and 11th-grade students in the southern United States from a larger longitudinal study (13% Asian American, 9% bi/multi

Characterizing tuberculosis diagnosis and the associations with economic instability and employment discrimination among women living with HIV across 11 countries in sub-Saharan Africa: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of death among people living with HIV. Global estimates among people living with HIV demonstrate that more incident cases and more deaths due to TB occur among women than men. Simultaneously, women experience higher levels of under and unpaid work compared to men. Given that poverty is an established determinant for TB, the aim of this study is to characterize the role of HIV-related employment discrimination and legal protections on TB outcomes for women living with HIV. METHODS: The People Living with HIV Stigma Index 2.0 study was implem

Mapping experiences of workplace stigma and discrimination within the lived-living experience of illicit drug use and bloodborne virus peer workforce: a scoping review.

Peer workers with lived-living experience of illicit drug use and/or bloodborne viruses are critical in linking community with health services and programs. Despite the increasing demand for, and recognition of, the value and contributions of peer workers, the risk of workplace stigma and discrimination due to their lived-living experience remains a persistent issue. This scoping review aims to map available literature about workplace stigma and discrimination against peer workers with lived-living experience of drug use or bloodborne virus. The methods used in this scoping review were guided

Effects of COVID-19 lockdown on perceived discrimination and internalized stigma in people with previous mental disorder diagnoses in Spain.

COVID-19 disease control efforts and consequences are likely to be complicated by the impact of fear and stigmatization of the novel coronavirus. These complications may also worsen due to the potential compounding of COVID-19 related stigma with stigmatization associated with previously diagnosed conditions. This exploratory study analyzes the experiences of the stigma associated with COVID-19 lockdown in people with different previous diagnoses 2 and 5 weeks after the beginning of the state of emergency in Spain. Gender and age were controlled as covariables and 1,052 people participated in

Opioid crisis: Another mechanism used to perpetuate American racism.

OBJECTIVES: Recently, driven largely by opioid-related deaths, President Donald Trump proclaimed that the opioid problem was now a national emergency. What looks like a radical shift to a more compassionate drug policy-one that favors treatment over incarceration-has encouraged many to hope that there will be far fewer drug-related arrests and deaths than there were in previous decades. METHODS AND RESULTS: We present evidence showing that large numbers of drug-related arrests persist and that racial discrimination is evident in opioid-related arrests. In addition, conventional strategies imp

Perceptions of Unprofessional Social Media Behavior Among Emergency Medicine Physicians.

BACKGROUND: Use of social media (SM) by physicians has exposed issues of privacy and professionalism. While guidelines have been created for SM use, details regarding specific SM behaviors that could lead to disciplinary action presently do not exist. OBJECTIVE: To compare State Medical Board (SMB) directors' perceptions of investigation for specific SM behaviors with those of emergency medicine (EM) physicians. METHODS: A multicenter anonymous survey was administered to physicians at 3 academic EM residency programs. Surveys consisted of case vignettes, asking, "If the SMB were informed of

Political ideology and American intergroup discrimination: A patriotism perspective.

In this research we demonstrate the powerful role of ingroup favoritism, rather than hostility, in American intergroup biases. Specifically, we take a novel perspective to understanding the relationship between political ideology and discrimination against ethnic-minority Americans by focusing on the role of patriotism. Across three studies, we show that political ideology is a strong predictor of resource allocation biases, and this effect is mediated by American patriotism and not by prejudice or nationalism. Conservatives report greater levels of patriotism than liberals, and patriotism is

HIV-related discrimination among grade six students in nine Southern African countries.

BACKGROUND: HIV-related stigmatisation and discrimination by young children towards their peers have important consequences at the individual level and for our response to the epidemic, yet research on this area is limited. METHODS: We used nationally representative data to examine discrimination of HIV-positive children by grade six students (n = 39,664) across nine countries in Southern Africa: Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
