Early androgens and development of social personality traits: Evidence from classical congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

Experimental studies in nonhuman species have demonstrated the powerful effects of androgen exposure during early life on neurobehavioral development. Work also has demonstrated links between early androgens in humans and characteristics that show sex differences, such as childhood play, gender identity, and sexual orientation. This study extends the investigation of potential androgen influences to the development of a subset of personality traits that are relevant to social interaction. We investigated the relationship of early androgens to personality traits, assessed via questionnaires, th

Central dopamine D2 receptors regulate growth-hormone-dependent body growth and pheromone signaling to conspecific males.

Competition between adult males for limited resources such as food and receptive females is shaped by the male pattern of pituitary growth hormone (GH) secretion that determines body size and the production of urinary pheromones involved in male-to-male aggression. In the brain, dopamine (DA) provides incentive salience to stimuli that predict the availability of food and sexual partners. Although the importance of the GH axis and central DA neurotransmission in social dominance and fitness is clearly appreciated, the two systems have always been studied unconnectedly. Here we conducted a cell

The interpersonal and intrapsychic functions of the pride expression.

A large body of research suggests that pride is associated with a distinct, cross-culturally recognized and spontaneously displayed nonverbal expression. Given its apparent universality, this expression is likely to have evolved as a functional signal, benefitting both receivers and senders. Here, we focus primarily on the intrapsychic benefits received by those who express pride. We review research suggesting that the expression communicates an individual's deservedness of high status to others, and that it does so implicitly and across diverse cultural contexts. We then discuss the expressio

Familial influences on ovulatory function in common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus).

Previous studies have indicated that many, but not all, female common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) housed with their natal families undergo social suppression of ovulation. In this study, we further characterized ovulatory activity in common marmoset daughters to determine the prevalence of social suppression of ovulation and to elucidate familial influences on daughters' ovarian activity. Blood samples were collected twice weekly from each of 46 daughters for 5-12 months, usually beginning when the daughters were 12 months of age. Plasma progesterone concentrations indicated that 46.3% of d

Matrilineal distribution of louse egg-handling techniques during grooming in free-ranging Japanese macaques.

Grooming behavior of which the primary function appears to be the removal of lice on other (Tanaka and Takefushi [1993] Anthropological Science 101:187-193) was studied in Japanese maceques at Jigokudani Monkey Park, Japan, June 1990-July 1993. Several louse egg-handling techniques used during grooming were identified (with differences in efficiency) in a free-ranging group. In the low-ranking maternal lineages, the distribution of these techniques is quite homogeneous, suggesting social transmission with goal emulation (one form of social learning) based on maternal kin. However, there is con

Effects of previous experience on the agonistic behaviour of male crickets, Gryllus bimaculatus.

Male solitary animals frequently enter aggressive interactions with conspecific individuals to protect their territory or to gain access to females. After an agonistic encounter, the loser (subordinate individual) changes its behaviour from aggression to avoidance. We investigated agonistic interactions between pairs of male crickets to understand how dominance is established and maintained. Two naïve males readily entered into agonistic interactions. Fights escalated in a stereotyped manner and were concluded with the establishment of dominance. If individuals were isolated after the first en

A winning smile? Smile intensity, physical dominance, and fighter performance.

The smile is perhaps the most widely studied facial expression of emotion, and in this article we examine its status as a sign of physical dominance. We reason, on the basis of prior research, that prior to a physical confrontation, smiles are a nonverbal sign of reduced hostility and aggression, and thereby unintentionally communicate reduced physical dominance. Two studies provide evidence in support of this prediction: Study 1 found that professional fighters who smiled more in a prefight photograph taken facing their opponent performed more poorly during the fight in relation to their less

Androgen receptors in a neural circuit from the medial amygdala to the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis regulate responses to social challenges.

Androgen receptor (AR) signaling in the posterior medial amygdala (MeP) plays a critical role in promoting resistance to social defeat stress in dominant male Syrian hamsters. The MeP is densely interconnected with the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), and the MeP-BNST pathway is essential for regulating aggression and responses to social threats. Here, we tested the hypothesis that AR signaling within MeP-BNST projection neurons is required for stress resistance in dominant animals. We first used a short hairpin RNA (shRNA) virus to reduce AR expression in MeP neurons. Male and fema

Context or arousal? Function of drumming in Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus).

Drumming is a non-vocal auditory display producing airborne as well as seismic vibrations by tapping body extremities on a surface. It is mostly described as an alarm signal but is also discussed to signal dominance or mating quality. To clarify the function of drumming in Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus), we compared the occurrence of drumming during predator, opposite-sex and same-sex encounters. We tested 48 captive Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) in three experiments. In predator experiments, subjects were exposed alone or with their cagemate to aerial and terrestrial pr

A dominance analysis of subjective cognitive complaint comorbidities in former professional football players with and without mild cognitive impairment.

OBJECTIVES: Subjective cognitive difficulties (SCDs) are associated with factors commonly reported in older adults and former contact sport athletes, regardless of objective cognitive decline. We investigated the relative contribution of these factors to SCD in former National Football League (NFL)-players with and without a diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). METHODS: Former NFL players (n = 907) aged ≥ 50 years (mean = 64.7 ± 8.9), with (n = 165) and without (n = 742) a diagnosis of MCI completed health questionnaires. Multivariable regression and dominance analyses determined the

Anogenital distance as a measure of male competitive ability in Rwenzori Angolan colobus.

Anogenital distance (AGD) is positively correlated to fetal androgen exposure and developmental masculinization in mammals. Independent of overall body size, AGD shows a strong positive correlation with male fertility and in rodents, AGD is a good indicator of male competitive ability and is associated with female choice. We hypothesized that AGD will also predict male competitive ability in non-human primates. To test this, we measured AGD noninvasively with a parallel laser in a wild population of Angolan colobus monkeys (Colobus angolensis ruwenzorii) in Uganda and correlated to it to their

Self- and other-perceptions of interpersonal problems: Effects of generalized anxiety, social anxiety, and depression.

Despite attention on overlap and distinction between generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and major depressive disorder (MDD), interpersonal specificity (distinct, prototypical interpersonal features) between the disorders has been understudied. There is emerging evidence for such specificity (e.g., Erickson et al., 2016), but most studies relied on self-report, and not all studies controlled for shared variance between the disorders, complicating interpretation of findings. The present study extended the literature by examining unique interpersonal correlates of

Rehabilitation of research chimpanzees: stress and coping after long-term isolation.

We report on the permanent retirement of chimpanzees from biomedical research and on resocialization after long-term social isolation. Our aim was to investigate to what extent behavioral and endocrine measures of stress in deprived laboratory chimpanzees can be improved by a more species-typical social life style. Personality in terms of novelty responses, social dominance after resocialization and hormonal stress susceptibility were affected by the onset of maternal separation of infant chimpanzees and duration of deprivation. Chimpanzees, who were separated from their mothers at a younger a

The dominance behavioral system and psychopathology: evidence from self-report, observational, and biological studies.

The dominance behavioral system (DBS) can be conceptualized as a biologically based system that guides dominance motivation, dominant and subordinate behavior, and responsivity to perceptions of power and subordination. A growing body of research suggests that problems with the DBS are evident across a broad range of psychopathologies. We begin by describing psychological, social, and biological correlates of the DBS. Extensive research suggests that externalizing disorders, mania proneness, and narcissistic traits are related to heightened dominance motivation and behaviors. Mania and narciss

Supernatural explanations across 114 societies are more common for natural than social phenomena.

Humans across the globe use supernatural beliefs to explain the world around them. This article explores whether cultural groups invoke the supernatural more to explain natural phenomena (for example, storms, disease outbreaks) or social phenomena (for example, murder, warfare). Quantitative analysis of ethnographic text across 114 geographically and culturally diverse societies found that supernatural explanations are more prevalent for natural than for social phenomena, consistent with theories that ground the origin of religious belief in a human tendency to perceive intent and agency in th

Brain circuits that regulate social behavior.

Social interactions are essential for the survival of individuals and the reproduction of populations. Social stressors, such as social defeat and isolation, can lead to emotional disorders and cognitive impairments. Furthermore, dysfunctional social behaviors are hallmark symptoms of various neuropsychiatric disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Consequently, understanding the neural circuit mechanisms underlying social behaviors has become a major focus in neuroscience. Social behaviors, which encompass a wide range of expressions and

Network analysis highlights socio-demographic patterns of stone tool-using primates.

While the nutritional benefits and social learning of tool use in primates have been widely studied, far less is known about how tool use is associated with social life. We investigated the social aspects of tool use in a hybrid population of long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis aurea × M. f. fascicularis) on Koram Island, Thailand, comprising both stone tool users and non-users. To assess potential socio-demographic patterns, we examined whether tool use differed between sexes and whether it was related to variation in dominance rank. Using social network analyses, we assessed whether to

[The reproductive correlates of social hierarchy in laboratory male mice].

In laboratory male mice the effects of social hierarchy on hormonal and spermatogenic testicular function, accessory organs and testicular weights, sexual behaviour have been investigated using an experimental model of social hierarchy, which is characterised by a minimal size (two male mice) and 5 days period of social interactions. The social rank of the partners was detected by asymmetry in aggressive behaviour. Using the experimental condition, when the both partners have no preferences for exclusive use of area we demonstrated that there were no rank differences in the number of mounts an
