The Influence of Chinese Cultural Symbols on Attitudes Towards Ethnic Integration: The Moderating Role of Ethnic Identity.

Attitudes towards ethnic integration serve as a cornerstone for the interaction, exchange and unity among China's diverse ethnic groups and are essential for strengthening a unified Chinese national identity. Drawing on theories of nation-state building, imagined community and the common ingroup identity model, this study adopted experimental methods to examine the positive influence of Chinese cultural symbols on ethnic integration attitudes and its moderating mechanism at both explicit and implicit levels. In Study 1 with a multi-ethnic sample, experimental priming of Chinese cultural symbol

Medicine as a Community of Practice: Implications for Medical Education.

The presence of a variety of independent learning theories makes it difficult for medical educators to construct a comprehensive theoretical framework for medical education, resulting in numerous and often unrelated curricular, instructional, and assessment practices. Linked with an understanding of identity formation, the concept of communities of practice could provide such a framework, emphasizing the social nature of learning. Individuals wish to join the community, moving from legitimate peripheral to full participation, acquiring the identity of community members and accepting the commun

Group marginalization: extending research on interpersonal rejection to small groups.

An extensive research literature has examined the reactions of individuals facing interpersonal rejection. Small groups can also be rejected, but current research tells us little about the experiences of groups and their members directly. We integrate findings from various literatures to gain insight into shared rejection experiences and their outcomes. Of most practical importance, we argue that groups can be expected to react with more hostility than individuals when rejected. Four existing models that account for how group processes might alter such reactions are examined: a need-threat mod

Preserving identity through caregiving: A systematic review and meta-synthesis of minority informal caregivers' experiences caring for older adults with neurological conditions.

Neurological conditions, including dementia, Parkinson's disease, and stroke, are rising globally, increasing reliance on informal caregivers, particularly within ethnic minority communities. However, little is known about these caregivers' experiences in the European context. This review aimed to explore how ethnic minority informal caregivers construct meaning around and navigate their caregiving roles. A systematic search of four electronic databases in August 2024 identified 18 qualitative studies involving 258 caregivers from the UK (n = 14), Norway (n = 2), the Netherlands (n = 1), and G

Reconstructing the professional identity of rural pre-service teachers via an English pedagogy course: A case study.

Teacher Professional Identity is critical for rural teacher recruitment and retention, but effective pathways for its construction remain limited. This study examines whether and how a holistically designed English pedagogy course, integrating theoretical learning and micro-teaching practices with guided reflective discourses, shapes the professional identities of rural pre-service teachers. A longitudinal study spanning one academic year was conducted with three rural pre-service teachers enrolled in the Excellent Teacher Program at a normal university in western China. Data were collected th

Professional Identity Formation of Basic Science Medical Educators: A Qualitative Study of Identity Supports and Threats.

PURPOSE: Basic science medical educators (BSME) play a vital role in the training of medical students, yet little is known about the factors that shape their professional identities. This multi-institutional qualitative study investigated factors that support and threaten the professional identity formation (PIF) of these medical educators. METHOD: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted with a purposive sample of 58 BSME from 7 allopathic medical schools in the U.S. In-depth semi-structured interviews of individual BSME were conducted between December 2020 and February 2021 to explore

How does psychiatric diagnosis affect young people's self-concept and social identity? A systematic review and synthesis of the qualitative literature.

Receiving a psychiatric diagnosis in childhood or adolescence can have numerous social, emotional and practical repercussions. Among the most important of these are the implications for a young person's self-concept and social identity. To ensure diagnoses are communicated and managed in a way that optimally benefits mental health trajectories, understanding young people's first-hand experience of living with a diagnosis is paramount. This systematic review collates, evaluates and synthesises the qualitative research that has explored how psychiatric diagnosis interacts with young people's sel

[The concept of identity in relation to motherhood in the discourse of teenagers who attend a pregnancy from a linguistic and psychoanalytical perspective].

My aim in this paper is to briefly discuss the notion of identity and how can unify the Psychoanalytical concept with the discursive, in order to carry out multidisciplinary research on this topic. This work is based on life stories collected in the Hospital Larcade, from 2008 to 2011, from teenagers who attend a pregnancy. Through the linguistic analysis of the guarantees, following the model of Toulmin (17), as it has been redefined by Pardo (14) and Molina (12), I intend to give an account of the discursive and psychological bases of what will then form an identity for these young women on

Inside the "pro-ana" community: a covert online participant observation.

A covert participant observation was conducted into the meanings of interaction in the "pro-ana" online community. Specifically, the researchers were interested in the kind of psychological support offered by such websites and by the beliefs of community members towards eating disorders and the processes of treatment and recovery. One of the authors joined a number of pro-ana sites in the guise of a plausible persona and experienced a variety of responses from community members, some extremely hostile, others very supportive, yet without ever being exposed as an interloper. These starkly diffe

Factors That Influence Genetic Counselors' Professional Identity-A Qualitative Study.

Genetic counselors describe their professional identity as who they are (personal characteristics and attributes), what they do (actions and skills), and what they possess (training and knowledge). A shared multidimensional perspective highlights the transferability of their skills across diverse roles and settings. This qualitative study aimed to identify factors that influence genetic counselors' perceptions and formation of their professional identities. Using Social Identity Theory as a theoretical framework, semi-structured recorded interviews were conducted with 50 genetic counselors who

Schrödinger's Doctrine of Identity: On the Role of Advaita Vedānta in Erwin Schrödinger's Thought.

Ever since Erwin Schrödinger learned about Indian thought through Arthur Schopenhauer, it occupied a visible role in both his published writings and personal books. Schrödinger called for a "blood transfusion" of Indian thought into the West and, in one notebook, construed the Upaniṣadic slogan "Brahman = Atman" as the "closest thing to the truth." However, the historical and philosophical literature on his engagement with Indian ideas remains limited and often confused. Two questions should be addressed for a more comprehensive account of Schrödinger's philosophical views: which Indian insigh

Evidence from sperm whale clans of symbolic marking in non-human cultures.

Culture, a pillar of the remarkable ecological success of humans, is increasingly recognized as a powerful force structuring nonhuman animal populations. A key gap between these two types of culture is quantitative evidence of symbolic markers-seemingly arbitrary traits that function as reliable indicators of cultural group membership to conspecifics. Using acoustic data collected from 23 Pacific Ocean locations, we provide quantitative evidence that certain sperm whale acoustic signals exhibit spatial patterns consistent with a symbolic marker function. Culture segments sperm whale population

Validation of the Multiracial Youth Socialization Brief (MY-Soc-B) Scale with adolescents.

The present study validates a brief version of the Multiracial Youth Socialization Scale, the MY-Soc-B, which assesses Multiracial youths' experiences of receiving messages from their caregivers about race and culture. Using a sample of 318 diverse Multiracial American adolescents (Mage = 16.01; SD = 1.30), the original 62 items were reduced to 24 items via an examination of confirmatory factor analyses and conceptual clarity and fit of item content. The model fit strongly supported retaining the eight-factor structure from the original full version. Validity and reliability of the eight subsc

To Be Bicultural Is to Be Friends? Associating Early Adolescents' Cultural Identities and Behaviors With Friendship Networks in Minority-Only Schools.

Many ethnic minoritized adolescents attend minority-only schools with no ethnic majoritized classmates, but we know little about their acculturation and friendships in such settings. This study examined how early adolescents' heritage and mainstream cultural identities and behaviors associated with friendship ties in minority-only class networks. Early adolescents (N = 146, Mage = 11.24, 54.4% boys) in minority-only primary schools reported their heritage and mainstream cultural identities and behaviors and completed a sociometric measure of their friendship networks. Social signals of belonging: How the perceived ethnic-national background of friends affects ascriptions of belonging given to descendants of migrants.

Many descendants of migrants feel belonging to both the national group and the ethnic minority group of their family (dual identity), but they often experience that majority members see them only as ethnic minority members. This could hamper their potential to improve intergroup relations. Because social networks tend to be homogeneous, having friends from a particular group could be interpreted as a signal of someone's group belonging. Our research advances the field by examining how the ethnic minority/national majority composition of the friendship network of descendants of migrants may aff

Navigating the social world with neck dystonia: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis.

Neck dystonia is a neurological condition, characterised by involuntary movements of the neck muscles, causing twisted head positions and often pain and head tremor. Ten participants with neck dystonia were interviewed and the data was analysed using an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis approach. Three themes were constructed: (1) dismissed by others for having an unfamiliar condition; (2) negotiating a new social identity; and (3) managing the stigma of a visible condition. It is proposed that psychological support could benefit people with neck dystonia who experience difficulties ari

Strong Ethnic Identity Buffers the Association of Heterosexism with Substance Use Among Black Sexual Minority Men.

INTRODUCTION: Heterosexist stigma, including microaggressions experienced in their own racial/ethnic communities, may partially explain disproportionate levels of substance use involvement among Black sexual minority men (BSMM). A strong sense of ethnic identity may provide BSMM with a protective resource. The purpose of this study was to explore associations between ethnic identity and substance use in BSMM. METHODS: Data were from Black sexual minority men (n = 390 Mage = 25.28; SD = 2.81) in the PrEP and Substance Use National Survey collected from March 2020 to August 2020 that included s
