Assessing vision and autism spectrum disorder-relevant social interaction phenotypes in Dscam mice.

Down syndrome cell adhesion molecule (DSCAM) is an immunoglobulin-superfamily cell-adhesion molecule important for neuronal survival, morphogenesis, synaptic specificity, and particularly retinal organization. Pathogenic variants in Dscam have been linked to developmental disorders including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Down Syndrome (DS), developmental delays and intellectual disabilities. Here we work to better understand the link between morphology and function in the nervous system by assessing the effects of Dscam mutations on both visual and ASD-relevant social interaction behaviors.

Building for speech: designing the next-generation of social robots for audio interaction.

There have been significant advances in robotics, conversational AI, and spoken dialogue systems (SDSs) over the past few years, but we still do not find social robots in public spaces such as train stations, shopping malls, or hospital waiting rooms. In this paper, we argue that early-stage collaboration between robot designers and SDS researchers is crucial for creating social robots that can legitimately be used in real-world environments. We draw from our experiences running experiments with social robots, and the surrounding literature, to highlight recurring issues. Robots need better sp

Depression mediates the association between insula-frontal functional connectivity and social interaction anxiety.

High rates of comorbidity between depression and anxiety are frequently observed. However, few studies have investigated the relationship between depression and social interaction anxiety using a dimensional approach. The current study aimed to explore the associations between depression and social interaction anxiety with a multivariate approach in a comparably large dataset (n = 194, 95 males). All participants completed a structural and a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scan and self-report measures of depression via Beck's Depression Inventory II and social inter

Sports and Social Interaction: Sports Experiences and Attitudes of the Urban Running Community.

Social change and development influence the motivational factors of people's sports participation, exposing the need for socialization and interaction. The purpose of this study is to investigate the interaction pattern of the urban running community and the behavior pattern of runners with the help of social interaction theory, and to explore the inner connection between their community movement and social interaction. Ten senior members of marathon urban running societies were selected to conduct two rounds of in-depth interviews which were analyzed using qualitative thematic analysis to und

Gene-environment interaction: New insights into perceived parenting and social anxiety among adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety symptoms (SAS) are among the most common mental health problems during adolescence, and it has been shown that parenting influences the adolescent's level of social anxiety. In addition, it is now widely assumed that most mental health problems, including social anxiety, originate from a complex interplay between genes and environment. However, to date, gene-environment (G × E) interactions studies in the field of social anxiety remain limited. In this study, we have examined how 274 genes involved in different neurotransmission pathways interact with five aspects of

Social interaction reward: A resilience approach to overcome vulnerability to drugs of abuse.

Drug addiction is a multifactorial disorder resulting from the complex interaction between biological, environmental and drug-induced effects. Generally, stress is a well-known risk factor for the development of drug addiction and relapse. While most of the research focuses on risk factors that increase the vulnerability to drugs of abuse, recent studies are focusing on the areas of strength/positive coping approaches that can increase resistance to drugs of abuse. In this review, we concentrate on resilience, seen as a dynamic process, which can allow individuals to positively adapt within th

OXTR methylation modulates exogenous oxytocin effects on human brain activity during social interaction.

Oxytocin (OT) effects on brain function and behavior are mediated by the oxytocin receptor (OXTR). The distribution of OXTR in the brain can profoundly influence social behavior. Emerging evidence suggests that DNA methylation of OXTR influences OXTR expression. Previously, we conducted a pharmaco-functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) study in which healthy subjects were randomized to 24 IU intranasal OT or placebo and imaged with fMRI while playing a dyadic social interaction task known as the iterated Prisoner's Dilemma (PD) game with same-sex partners. Here, we investigate whether DN

Social interaction anxiety and personality traits predicting engagement in health risk sexual behaviors.

Individuals with social interaction anxiety, a facet of social anxiety disorder, withdraw from or avoid social encounters and generally avoid risks. However, a subset engages in health risk sexual behavior (HRSB). Because sensation seeking, emotion dysregulation, and impulsivity predict engagement in HRSB among adolescents and young adults, the present study hypothesized that latent classes of social interaction anxiety and these personality traits would differentially predict likelihood of engagement in HRSB. Finite mixture modeling was used to discern four classes: two low social interaction

Let's chat: developmental neural bases of social motivation during real-time peer interaction.

Humans are motivated to interact with each other, but the neural bases of social motivation have been predominantly examined in non-interactive contexts. Understanding real-world social motivation is of special importance during middle childhood (ages 8-12), a period when social skills improve, social networks grow, and social brain networks specialize. To assess interactive social motivation, the current study used a novel fMRI paradigm in which children believed they were chatting with a peer. The design targeted two phases of interaction: (1) Initiation, in which children engaged in a socia

Personal space regulation in childhood autism: Effects of social interaction and person's perspective.

Studies in children with Typical Development (TD) and with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) revealed that autism affects the personal space regulation, influencing both its size (permeability) and its changes depending on social interaction (flexibility). Here, we investigate how the nature of social interaction (Cooperative vs. Uncooperative) and the person perspective influence permeability and flexibility of interpersonal distance. Moreover, we tested whether the deficit observed in ASD children, reflects the social impairment (SI) in daily interactions. The stop-distance paradigm was used to

Age-dependent effects on social interaction of NMDA GluN2A receptor subtype-selective antagonism.

NMDA receptor-mediated neurotransmission is implicated in the regulation of normal sociability in mice. The heterotetrameric NMDA receptor is composed of two obligatory GluN1 and either two "modulatory" GluN2A or GluN2B receptor subunits. GluN2A and GluN2B-containing receptors differ in terms of their developmental expression, distribution between synaptic and extrasynaptic locations, and channel kinetic properties, among other differences. Because age-dependent differences in disruptive effects of GluN2A and GluN2B subtype-selective antagonists on sociability and locomotor activity have been

The Core Extrusion Schema-Revised: Hiding Oneself Predicts Severity of Social Interaction Anxiety.

Cognitive behavioral models of social anxiety disorder (SAD) suggest that fear of negative evaluation is a core fear or vulnerability for SAD. However, why negative evaluation is feared is not fully understood. It is possible that core beliefs contribute to the relationship between fear of negative evaluation and SAD. One of these beliefs may be a core extrusion schema: a constellation of beliefs that one's true self will be rejected by others and therefore one should hide one's true self. In the current study (N = 699), we extended research on the Core Extrusion Schema and created a shortened

Posttraumatic stress and social anxiety: the interaction of traumatic events and interpersonal fears.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD) are frequently comorbid among veteran and community samples. Several studies have demonstrated significant comorbidity between trauma, PTSD, and social anxiety (SA), and a growing number of studies have explored the nature of this association. Although a diagnosis of either PTSD or SAD alone can result in significant impairment in social and occupational functioning, these difficulties are often magnified in persons suffering from both disorders. This review describes the current state-of-the-art regarding the co-occurrence

Effects of 5,7 dichlorokynurenic acid on conflict, social interaction and plus maze behaviors.

Antagonists at the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor site share a number of properties including anticonvulsant and anxiolytic-like behaviors. In the social interaction and elevated plus maze assay, two non-conditioned paradigms predictive of anxiolytic activity, the NMDA antagonists 5,7 DCKA, CPP and MK-801, as well as diazepam, all significantly increased both social interaction time and open arm exploration time, respectively. Likewise, in the Cook and Davidson conditioned conflict paradigm, the NMDA antagonists 5,7 dichlorokynurenic acid (DCKA; 100 and 173 mg/kg), (+-)-3-(2-carboxypiper

Severe impairments of social interaction and associated abnormalities in children: epidemiology and classification.

The prevalence, in children aged under 15, of severe impairments of social interaction, language abnormalities, and repetitive stereotyped behaviors was investigated in an area of London. A "socially impaired" group (more than half of whom were severely retarded) and a comparison group of "sociable severely mentally retarded" children were identified. Mutism or echolalia, and repetitive stereotyped behaviors were found in almost all the socially impaired children, but to a less marked extent in a minority of the sociable severely retarded. Certain organic conditions were found more often in th

Social Interactions Between People Living With Dementia and Staff in Health and Social Care Settings: A Scoping Review.

Dementia is an umbrella term for progressive conditions affecting memory, thinking, communication and other cognitive functions. These changes can make social interaction challenging, particularly in unfamiliar or overstimulating environments. Although social interactions between staff and people living with dementia are recognised as an aspect of care, existing literature across health and social care settings largely focuses on general care needs and experiences rather than social interaction specifically. Consequently, there is limited understanding of the types of social interactions that

The temporal relationships between social motivation and social interactions in people with serious mental illness and recent homelessness.

BACKGROUND: People with serious mental illness (SMI) and those who have experienced homelessness have disrupted social functioning. A primary obstacle to successful social functioning is building and maintaining meaningful social connections, which may depend on individuals' motivation to engage in social interactions. AIMS: We examined the temporal, bidirectional relationships between social approach and avoidance motivation and social interactions over time using ecological momentary assessment (EMA). METHODS: Twenty-nine participants with SMI and a history of homelessness answered EMA sur

Measuring the experience of social connection within specific social interactions: The Connection During Conversations Scale (CDCS).

Decades of research have demonstrated that social connection is fundamental to health and well-being. The benefits of connection are observed with both close and distant others, within both new and established relationships, and even with exchanges that unfold over a relatively short timeframe. Because social connection is fundamental to well-being, many existing measures in the literature aim to assess either a global sense of connection or partner-specific (relationship-specific) connection. What is missing are measures of connection felt in specific social interactions or conversations. In

Depersonalization and derealization in embarrassing social interactions: an experience sampling study in social phobia, major depression and controls.

OBJECTIVE: The study explored the duration and frequency of depersonalization (DP) and derealization (DR) in embarrassing social interactions in the everyday life of individuals with social phobia (SP), major depressive disorder (MDD) and controls. METHODS: Experience sampling was used (seven days, five surveys per day). A total of N = 165 patients (n = 47 SP, n = 118 MDD) and n = 119 controls were included. DP/DR were assessed whenever an interaction has been indicated as embarrassing. RESULTS: Individuals with SP and MDD experienced more embarrassing social interactions than controls and,
