Stigma, Abuse, and Resistance: Unveiling Community Fear of COVID-19 Through Voices of India's Frontline Community Health Workers.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, community health workers (CHWs) worldwide faced violence and abuse. In India, CHWs, known as Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs), encountered community resistance and violence in their frontline roles. However, positioned precariously within a neoliberal public health system, their voices remained absent in policymaking, reinforcing structural invisibility. This study, guided by the culture-centered approach (CCA), draws on semi-structured interviews (n = 30) with ASHAs in Odisha, India, to examine their negotiations with community resistance. Findings reve

Experiences and consequences of living with ongoing conflict: Arab-Palestinian adolescents in Israel during the war that began on October 7.

Adolescence is a critical period of personal and social development, particularly for Arab-Palestinian adolescents in Israel, whose lives are shaped by persistent political conflict and marginalization, this period becomes particularly challenging. The war that began on October 7, 2023 intensified these challenges, exposing adolescents to increased violence, fear, and social instability. This qualitative study investigated the impact of the October 7 war on Arab-Palestinian adolescents in Israel based on six focus groups involving 34 participants aged 12-18. The findings reveal two central the

Dying With Intellectual and Developmental Disability: A Bibliometric Review of End-of-Life and Palliative Care Literature, 1990-2025.

How a scholarly community organizes knowledge about the deaths of marginalized populations is itself a question for death studies. This bibliometric review maps the global literature on end-of-life and palliative care for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, drawing on 919 English-language articles from 1990 to 2025. Only 5.5% of papers appeared in palliative care journals; the evidence base has accumulated in disability-specialist venues largely invisible to scholars and clinicians of dying. Topic modeling on 423 core documents shows staff training has dominated this schol

At the crossroads: Intersectional approaches to women's health equity.

Global shifts in health policies have significantly affected access to reproductive healthcare services, with impacts varying greatly across different populations. Recent policy changes in various regions have included defunding reproductive health programs, promoting abstinence-only education, and restricting international non-government organizations from providing comprehensive reproductive healthcare services. These policies have led to clinic closures, reduced access to maternal and reproductive healthcare in low- and middle-income countries, and increased health inequities. While all low

Culturally Centering the Voices of Transgender Sex Workers in Singapore: Health, Materiality and Violence.

The transgender sex worker experience of health in Singapore is multidimensional, working at the intersections of culture, social class, and gendered marginalization. Drawing on in-depth interviews with transgender sex workers in the context of Singapore's extreme neoliberalism and located within a larger culture-centered intervention that emerged through an academic-activist-community partnership, this study foregrounds the everyday meanings of health among transgender sex workers who are marginalized. We offer a discursive register for theorizing violence as disruption of health. Participant

Resisting medical frameworks: deaf identity as cultural-linguistic minority in Turkey.

This study examines Turkish Deaf adults' identity construction through interpretative phenomenological analysis. Seven Deaf parents (mean age = 59.14; 3 women, 4 men) with hearing children participated in semi-structured interviews conducted in Turkish Sign Language. Drawing on Social Identity Theory and Self-Categorization Theory, the findings show that participants construct identity through a tripartite social categorization: Deaf people (sign language users), hearing individuals, and those using medical devices. Participants reject disability labels and position themselves as cultural-ling

The Gendered Nature and Malleability of Gamer Stereotypes.

Video gaming is seen as a male space. Female gamers are seen as atypical, have their competence challenged, and face more harassment than male gamers do. This precarious position is increasingly problematic as video gaming is now one of the most prevalent leisure activities, providing an opportunity to both forge and maintain friendships, and to achieve social status and career opportunities. We argue that the marginalization of female gamers is driven by masculine gamer stereotypes. We investigate the content and gendered nature of gamer stereotypes as well as their malleability in response t

An ecological analysis of the effects of deviant peer clustering on sexual promiscuity, problem behavior, and childbearing from early adolescence to adulthood: an enhancement of the life history framework.

The authors propose that peer relationships should be included in a life history perspective on adolescent problem behavior. Longitudinal analyses were used to examine deviant peer clustering as the mediating link between attenuated family ties, peer marginalization, and social disadvantage in early adolescence and sexual promiscuity in middle adolescence and childbearing by early adulthood. Specifically, 998 youths, along with their families, were assessed at age 11 years and periodically through age 24 years. Structural equation modeling revealed that the peer-enhanced life history model pro

An investigation of the growing number of deaths of unidentified people in Russia.

BACKGROUND: We examined mortality among working-age Russian men whose identity could not be determined, focusing on where and how they died. METHODS: Employing micro-data from deaths that occurred in Izhevsk (Ural region) between June 2004 and September 2005, we analysed the characteristics of decedent men aged 25-54 (n = 2158). Differences between completely identified (n = 1699) and unidentified deaths (n = 282) were compared via logistic regression. Data on all deaths in Russia in 2002 were used for supplemental comparisons. RESULTS: We found that relative to identified men, unidentified

Unfit Mothers Only: Medical Gatekeeping of Second- and Third-Trimester Abortion in France.

BACKGROUND: In France, abortion is available without restriction as to reason until 14 weeks of pregnancy. Beyond this limit, medical authorization is required and "medical termination of pregnancy" is permitted for fetal malformation or serious danger to the woman's health, including from "psychosocial distress." Little is known about how professionals interpret psychosocial distress criteria and which women are deemed eligible. METHODS: This study is based on 6 months of ethnographic fieldwork (2021-2022) in two French university hospital maternity wards. Data collection included observatio

Pain as a risk factor for substance use: a qualitative study of people who use drugs in British Columbia, Canada.

BACKGROUND: People who use drugs have a significantly higher prevalence of chronic non-cancer pain compared to the general population, yet little is known about how various policy, economic, physical, and social environments may serve as risk or protective factors in the context of concurrent pain and substance use. Therefore, this study sought to explore perspectives, risks, and harms associated with pain among people who use drugs. METHODS: Thirteen focus group interviews were held across British Columbia, Canada, from July to September 2015. In total, 83 people who had lived experience wit

Surveying Indian gay men for coping skills and HIV testing patterns using the internet.

BACKGROUND: Surveying vulnerable and incarcerated populations is often challenging. Newer methods to reach and collect sensitive information in a safe, secure, and valid manner can go a long way in addressing this unmet need. Homosexual men in India live with inadequate social support, marginalization, and lack legal recognition. These make them less reachable by public health agencies, and make them more likely to continue with high-risk behaviors, and contract human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). AIMS: To understand coping skills and HIV testing patterns of homosexual men versus heterosexual

Adaptive behaviour in children and adolescents with foetal alcohol spectrum disorders: a comparison with specific learning disability and typical development.

Foetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) is a leading cause of intellectual disability in the western world. Children and adolescents with FASD are often exposed to a double burden in life, as their neurological sequelae are accompanied by adverse living surroundings exposing them to further environmental risk. In the present study, the adaptive abilities of a group of children and adolescents with FASD were examined using the Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scales (VABS) and compared to those of a group of IQ-matched children with specific learning disorder (SLD) as well as with typically develop

Prolactin is an autocrine or paracrine growth factor for human myometrial and leiomyoma cells.

Over the last two decades, immigrant and refugee integration service agencies in Canada have been incorporating a focus on resiliency in their work and hold "fostering resilience" as a primary goal of services. These agencies focus on helping their clients enhance resilience in response to their integration challenges. Refugee and immigrant youth (RIY) face intersectional vulnerabilities during their resettlement process. These challenges make the concept of resilience vital to their success. However, resettlement service providers associate RIY's resilience with their assimilation into the We

Genetic Modeling of Dyadic Behavioral Traits: Implications for Estimation and Interpretation of Variance Components.

Studying the genomic control of dyadic social interactions is gaining traction in animal genetics. However, genetic modeling of social interactions poses several challenges, one of which is whether social interactions should be treated as dyadic traits or as aggregated traits at the individual level. In this study, we systematically compared two approaches: dyadic models using dyadic traits and marginal models using marginally aggregated traits and we derived the algebraic relationships between their variance components. In the application, we used a published dataset on post-mixing aggression

[Aggravation and contextual modulation of obsessive-compulsive symptoms during attempts at community reintegration in a man with a psychotic disorder and complex post-traumatic stress disorder: A case report].

This case report describes the clinical course of an adult man followed in forensic and community psychiatry, presenting a complex history of a psychotic disorder, developmental trauma, severe polysubstance use, and prolonged social marginalization. The originality of this case lies in the progressive emergence of atypical obsessive-compulsive phenomena during phases of structured psychosocial reintegration. These phenomena intensify in contexts of multiple relational and institutional demands and attenuate when the patient withdraws from certain commitments or imposed frameworks. Predominant

How can the nursing profession help reduce sexual and gender minority related health disparities: Recommendations from the National Nursing LGBTQ Health Summit.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people, also commonly referred to as sexual and gender minorities (SGMs), live in every part of the United States and encompass all races and/or ethnicities, religions, and social classes. Major reports from various sources document higher rates of health issues (e.g., substance abuse, depression, suicidality, cardiovascular disease) among SGMs than heterosexuals. Chronic stress related to marginalization and discrimination is a key contributor to these disparities. The nursing profession has paid relatively little attention to

Reimagining Research with Pregnant Women and Parents Who Consume Cannabis in the Era of Legalization: The Value of Integrating Intersectional Feminist and Participatory Action Approaches.

Research on women who consume cannabis has predominantly focused on the perinatal period whereby cannabis consumption is problematized, linked to negative perinatal outcomes, and related to substance use and mental health challenges. When this historical literature and research about cannabis consumption is considered through a sociolegal and intersectional lens, questions emerge about how cannabis legalization may benefit and harm women, particularly women who experience marginalization along various axes of identity such as gender, race, and class. Questions also emerge about how women who c

Overview of the University of Pittsburgh/amfAR Training Program in HIV Prevention Research for MSM and Male-to-Female Transgender Populations in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

Gay men, other men who have sex with men and transgender (GMT) populations suffer a disproportionate burden of HIV disease around the globe, which is directly attributable to the virulently homophobic environments in which many GMT people live. In addition to the direct effects of homophobia on GMT individuals, the ongoing marginalization of GMT people has meant that there is limited social capital on which effective HIV prevention and care programs can be built in many low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). Thus, meaningful responses meant to address the dire situation of GMT populations in
