[Epidemic emergencies and social stigma. Which lessons should we learn from SARS and Ebola epidemics for the current CoViD-19 pandemics?].

Scientific literature produced during the most recent international epidemic emergencies, such as SARS and Ebola, highlights that infected persons are often labeled, rejected, discriminated and subjected to loss of status due to their perceived link with the disease. Such experiences of discrimination may have detrimental effects on both patients, their family members, friends and communities. It is also possible that those who have been infected with COVD-19 may experience shame, guilt and sense of isolation arising from social stigma. It is therefore important to take full advantage of exper

Correlates of VA mental health treatment utilization among OEF/OIF/OND veterans: Resilience, stigma, social support, personality, and beliefs about treatment.

Veterans of Operations Iraqi Freedom/Enduring Freedom/New Dawn (OEF/OIF/OND) tend not to engage in mental health care. Identifying modifiable factors related to mental health service utilization could facilitate development of interventions to increase utilization. The current study examined the relationship between mental health care utilization and measures of PTSD symptoms, resilience, stigma, beliefs about mental health care, perceived barriers to mental health care, posttraumatic growth and meaning, social support, and personality factors in a sample of 100 OEF/OIF/OND veterans with PTSD

Identification and characterisation of novel wasp mastoparans and chemotactic peptides from the venom of social wasp Polistes stigma (Hymenoptera: Vespidae: Polistinae).

Polistes stigma is a common social wasp found in continental Southeast Asia. Despite its wide distribution and abundance, hitherto, there are no studies on small or medium molecular weight components of the venom. For the first time, this study has described the amino acid sequences and its post-translation modifications (PTM's) of four wasp-mastoparans (Ps 1524, Ps 1540, Ps 1556 and Ps 1630), three chemotactic peptides (Ps1417, Ps1434 and Ps1474) and one more (Ps1549) lysine rich peptide from the venom of P. stigma. There were 27 mass traces obtained from the crude natural venom, in which the

Stigma, discrimination and HIV outcomes among people living with HIV in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: The intersection of multiple social inequalities.

Limited research has examined the social context surrounding stigma and discrimination and HIV outcomes among people living with HIV (PLHIV). We surveyed 900 PLHIV in Brazil and examined the relationship between stigma, discrimination and HIV outcomes utilising multivariable logistic regression. HIV stigma and discrimination were inversely associated with age (AOR Stigma 0.65, 95% CI 0.49-0.88; AOR Discrimination 0.72, 95% CI 0.54-0.95) and income (AOR Stigma 0.74, 95% CI 0.55-0.99; AOR Discrimination 0.62, 95% CI 0.46-0.82). Stigma was inversely associated with education (AOR 0.71, 95% CI 0.5

Service satisfaction and perceived social support mediate the effect of internalised stigma on quality of life of people with mental illness: mediation analysis.

When people with mental illnesses internalise stigma, their quality of life (QoL) can be compromised. However, previous studies in sub-Saharan countries, including Ethiopia, have not examined the relationship between internalised stigma and QoL, nor how factors such as service satisfaction and perceived social support might mediate this relationship. In this study using a mediation analysis model we explore the possible mediating role of service satisfaction and perceived social support in the relationship between internalised stigma and QoL among people with mental illness attending psychiatr

Social ecosystems of trafficked conflict-related sexual violence survivors and their children: navigating and coping with intersecting stigma and violence in Nigeria and Iraq.

BACKGROUND: We explore the intersectional risk of stigma and violence faced by women and girls trafficked by armed groups, and their ‘children born of war’ (CBOW) in Nigeria and Iraq. Failing to address intersectional violence, stigma and discrimination has severe implications for women’s and children’s health, wellbeing, intergenerational trauma, sustained reintegration, and Women, Youth, Peace and Security Agendas, Security Council Resolutions 1325/2467 and Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs). Stigma and Social Determinants of Health Associated With Fidelity to Guideline-Concordant Therapy in Patients With Breast Cancer Living With and Without HIV in Botswana.

BACKGROUND: Patients with breast cancer in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) experience a disproportionate burden of mortality. Fidelity to treatment guidelines, defined as receiving optimal dose and frequency of prescribed treatments, improves survival. We sought to identify patient factors associated with treatment fidelity and how this may differ for people with HIV (PWH) and breast cancer. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study of women who initiated outpatient treatment for stages I-III breast cancer in Botswana, with deviance sampling of high- and low-fidelity patients. Negative Impacts of Self-Stigma on the Quality of Life of Patients in Methadone Maintenance Treatment: The Mediated Roles of Psychological Distress and Social Functioning.

A sample of heroin users (n = 250) in methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) was used in this cross-sectional study to clarify the mechanisms of the effects of stigma on quality of life (QoL) through psychological distress and social functioning. All the participants had their self-stigma, psychological distress, social functioning, and QoL measured. Psychological distress and social functioning were proposed to be mediators between self-stigma and QoL. Several linear models using structural equation modeling were conducted to examine the mediated effects. The negative effects of self-stigma on

Living Death in the City of Widows: A Mixed-Methods Study of Social Death, Stigma, and Abandonment Among Older Widows in Vrindavan, India.

India has 46.4 million widows, the highest number globally, with thousands migrating to Vrindavan, the "City of Widows," where they experience systematic social exclusion and marginalization (Loomba Foundation, 2015; Pathak & Tripathi, 2016). This study examines the socio-psychological, cultural, and economic problems faced by widows in Vrindavan through the lens of social death theory (Goffman, 1963; Kastenbaum, 1977). A convergent parallel mixed-methods design (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2017) employed structured interviews (N = 258) and qualitative case narratives. Participants were selected v

A discourse analysis of social inequities, gender, and stigma in tuberculosis policies of seven countries from Africa, Asia, Europe and South America.

BACKGROUND: Interventions tackling the social aspects of tuberculosis (TB) are widely suggested, yet we miss insights into how policies incorporate these. The language and framing of policies to address TB can lend important insights into how these social drivers are perceived, problematized, and responded to. OBJECTIVE: To understand how discourses in current TB policies frame social dimensions of TB, especially concepts of social inequity, gender, and stigma. METHODS: We conducted a comparative critical discourse analysis of twenty-one publicly available TB-related policies from Belarus, B

Cognitive, Regulatory, and Interpersonal Mechanisms of HIV Stigma on the Mental and Social Health of Men Who Have Sex With Men Living With HIV.

Public stigma surrounding HIV is related to heightened emotional distress, poor psychological functioning, and reduced subjective well-being in people living with HIV. For men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV, they may also face stigmatizing attitudes within the gay community, which create an additional burden to their health. Grounded in the psychological mediation framework, the present study examined the underlying psychological processes through which HIV stigma from the public and within the gay community influences the mental and social health of MSM living with HIV. Findings
