A developmental examination of the conceptual structure of animal, artifact, and human social categories across two cultural contexts.

Previous research indicates that the ontological status that adults attribute to categories varies systematically by domain. For example, adults view distinctions between different animal species as natural and objective, but view distinctions between different kinds of furniture as more conventionalized and subjective. The present work (N=435; ages 5-18) examined the effects of domain, age, and cultural context on beliefs about the naturalness vs. conventionality of categories. Results demonstrate that young children, like adults, view animal categories as natural kinds, but artifact categori

Social Integration as Mediator and Age as Moderator in Social Capital Affecting Mental Health of Internal Migrant Workers: A Multi-Group Structural Equation Modeling Approach.

The rise of migrant workers has been a unique social phenomenon as China goes through industrialization, urbanization, and modernization. They are a special social group formed during the economic and social transition of the country. Migration of rural labor has pushed China on its new path toward industrialization and urbanization. Because of the urban-rural dual system of the country, however, it is difficult for migrant workers to be fully integrated into host cities, making them susceptible to negative emotions and mental health issues. Therefore, their mental health is an issue of great

Family is all that matters: Prospective associations between structure, function, and quality of social relations and self-rated health in the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP).

We prospectively examined the association between structure, function, and quality of social relations and self-rated health (SRH) in U.S. adults followed over 10 years in the population-based National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP). Large social network and high positive/negative social support were measured at baseline and defined as the highest quartile. These three binary measures were reported from friends, family, and partner and combined into a multifactorial exposure variable. SRH was measured through a 5-point Likert scale and dichotomised. Odds ratios (OR) for poor SR

Social Inequality and Structural Vulnerability as Predictors of Health-Related Quality of Life: A Prospective Cohort Study.

Background Social inequality and structural vulnerability are increasingly recognized as important social determinants of health; however, longitudinal evidence regarding their impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) remains limited, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This study explored associations between social inequality, structural vulnerability, and HRQoL over a six-month follow-up period in adults in Pakistan. Methods We conducted a prospective cohort study of 600 adult participants recruited through healthcare facilities and community-based settings in Karachi,

Social and Structural Determinants of Health Impact Utilization of Emergency Surgical Services in a Regional Quality Collaborative.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency general surgery (EGS) is associated with increased morbidity. The unequal distribution of social and structural determinants of health (SSDH) may impact the need for EGS. We hypothesized that SSDH would be associated with an increased utilization of EGS and sought to evaluate the impact of SSDH on EGS utilization in a regional quality collaborative. METHODS: Patients undergoing general surgery procedures at 16 South Carolina Surgical Quality Collaborative hospitals between 08/2015 and 12/2021 were randomly selected for data abstraction and analysis. The primary outcome

Family structure, adolescent mental health, and the role of advisors in the cultural and social context of South Korea.

Prior research consistently reports differences in mental health outcomes among adolescents between intact and non-intact families, highlighting the need to address these disparities. This study aims to investigate the moderating effect of advisers (counselors, teachers, or friends) on the mental health of adolescents from non-intact families. We conducted a cross-sectional study using data from the 2017 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey, a large, representative nationwide sample of adolescents. We included 61,572 middle and high school students living with at least one parent, catego

[Structural and functional cardiac parameters in older adults residing in a long-term social care facility.].

The aging of the population is accompanied by an increase in the prevalence of chronic heart failure, including those with preserved ejection fraction, which necessitates the early detection of structural and functional changes in the myocardium in the elderly and senile, especially in long-term care facilities. The aim of the study was to identify the features of the structural and functional state and diastolic function of the myocardium in elderly and senile patients with various rehabilitation profiles according to transthoracic echocardiography. The study included residents of the residen

The role of artificial intelligence and bureaucracy in frugal innovation for social and environmental performance: A structuration theory approach.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has played a crucial role in decision-making within public departments. The impact of AI on the discretion exercised by public officials and bureaucrats has attracted significant scholarly attention. Despite the growing body of literature, there remains a need to explore how digital discretion and social structures shape innovation, particularly in disadvantaged communities facing resource constraints, limited accessibility, and complex societal issues. In such contexts, AI-assisted decision-making by public officials can promote frugal innovation, contributing to

Impact of a Structured Social Skills Training Program on Adolescents and Young Adults with Level 1 Autism.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Level 1 autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by challenges in social and communication skills. Despite these difficulties, individuals with level 1 ASD often exhibit average intelligence and typical language development. Improving socialisation skills in this population requires tailored approaches that address their specific needs and include targeted strategies. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured social skills training programme for adolescents and young adults with level 1 ASD. METHODS: Participants

Synthesis of evidence yields high social cost of carbon due to structural model variation and uncertainties.

Estimating the cost to society from a ton of CO2-termed the social cost of carbon (SCC)-requires connecting a model of the climate system with a representation of the economic and social effects of changes in climate, and the aggregation of diverse, uncertain impacts across both time and space. A growing literature has examined the effect of fundamental structural elements of the models supporting SCC calculations. This work has accumulated in a piecemeal fashion, leaving their relative importance unclear. Here, we perform a comprehensive synthesis of the evidence on the SCC, combining 1,823 e

The influence of social knowledge structures on hostile attribution bias in aggressive and nonaggressive individuals: An ERP study.

According to several social-cognitive models, social knowledge structures described as hostile scripts or schemas may explain why aggressive individuals are prone to attribute hostile intention to others' ambiguous behaviors, a cognitive bias called hostile attribution bias (HAB). The aggression-related concepts in aggressive individuals' semantic memory would be highly accessible, notably through the activation of hostile concepts in nonhostile social contexts, and such an activation would result in HAB. The aim of the study was to test this hypothesis using the N400 component with EEG measur

Structural Racism, the Social Determination of Health, and Health Inequities: The Intersecting Impacts of Housing and Mass Incarceration.

Public health researchers have directed increasing attention to structural racism and its implications for health equity. The conceptualization of racism as historically rooted in systems, structures, and institutions of US society has important implications for addressing social determinants of health (SDOH). It requires theorizing SDOH as embedded in and expressions of racially oppressive historical structures that are manifested in and maintained by policies, programs, and practices in multiple domains that dynamically intersect to reinforce and reproduce in new ways: race inequities in hea

The prevalence and social-structural correlates of housing status among women living with HIV in Vancouver, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Women living with HIV (WLWH) experience numerous social and structural barriers to stable housing, with substantial implications for access to health care services. This study is the first to apply the Canadian Definition of Homelessness (CDOH), an inclusive national guideline, to investigate the prevalence and correlates of housing status among WLWH in Metro Vancouver, Canada. METHODS: Our study utilized data from a longitudinal open cohort of cisgender and trans WLWH aged 14 years and older, in 2010-2019. Cross-sectional descriptive statistics of the prevalence of housing status

Altered cingulate structures and the associations with social awareness deficits and CNTNAP2 gene in autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUNDS: Although evidence suggests that the activity of the anterior cingulate cortex involves social cognition, there are inconsistent findings regarding the aberrant cingulate gray matter (GM) and scanty evidence about altered cortical thickness and white matter (WM) of cingulate in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Evidence supports the association between the genetic variants of CNTNAP2 and altered brain connectivity. This study investigated the cingulate substructure and its association with social awareness deficits and the CNTNAP2 variants in individuals with ASD and

Chronic social defeat stress induces sustained synaptic structural changes in the prefrontal cortex and amygdala.

Previous studies show that chronic stress induces synaptic structural alterations in brain regions involved in emotional processing such as the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and the basolateral amygdala (BLA). Yet, these studies are based mainly in animal exposure to unpredictable stressors or to restraint stress. On the other hand, studies using the chronic social defeat stress (CSDS), a relevant model of depression based on social conflict, are lacking. Here we aim to study the acute (24 h after CSDS) and long-term (one month after CSDS) effects of CSDS on dendritic and synaptic structures in the
