The neural correlates of social attention: automatic orienting to social and nonsocial cues.

Previous evidence suggests that directional social cues (e.g., eye gaze) cause automatic shifts in attention toward gaze direction. It has been proposed that automatic attentional orienting driven by social cues (social orienting) involves a different neural network from automatic orienting driven by nonsocial cues. However, previous neuroimaging studies on social orienting have only compared gaze cues to symbolic cues, which typically engage top-down mechanisms. Therefore, we directly compared the neural activity involved in social orienting to that involved in purely automatic nonsocial orie

Effects of MDMA on sociability and neural response to social threat and social reward.

RATIONALE: +/-3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, "ecstasy") reportedly produces unique subjective effects, including increased sociability, feelings of closeness with others, and reduced interpersonal defensiveness. Despite their apparent importance in recreational and potential psychotherapeutic use of MDMA, the defining characteristics and neurobiological mechanisms of these interpersonal effects are poorly understood. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We investigated acute effects of MDMA on self-reported sociability and neuronal activation in response to socially threatening (angry and fearful

Intergenerational transmission of social anxiety: the role of social referencing processes in infancy.

Responses to an unfamiliar adult were examined in infants of mothers with social phobia (N= 79) and infants of nonanxious comparison mothers (N= 77) at 10 and 14 months in a social referencing paradigm. On each occasion, a female stranger first interacted with the mother and then approached and interacted with the infant. Over time, infants of mothers with social phobia showed increasing avoidance of the stranger, particularly when they were behaviorally inhibited. In boys, maternal social phobia was associated with increasing fearful responses. Infant avoidance was predicted by expressed mate

Visual attention during virtual social situations depends on social anxiety.

Theories of anxiety propose that people with phobias involuntarily allocate their attention first toward threatening stimuli and then away from these stimuli. Therefore, the current study assessed attention toward and away of social cues in virtual fear-relevant situations. More specifically, open visual attention was assessed by means of electroocculogram (EOG)-based eye-tracking combined with head-tracking. Participants viewed virtual persons with different facial expressions (happy or angry) in a free-viewing virtual elevator situation. Twenty-six students participated in the study. Actual

Social anxiety and self-evaluation of social performance in a nonclinical sample of children.

In an investigation of socially anxious children's social behavior and self-evaluation, 28 high socially anxious and 28 low socially anxious children, ages 11 to 13 years, appraised their performance before and after participating in a role-play task. Half of the children were given video feedback prior to giving their posttask self-evaluations. High socially anxious children anticipated poorer performance on the role-play task, and some group differences in observed social performance were evident. Self-evaluations from video feedback only improved for the high socially anxious children who d

The association between social anxiety and social functioning in first episode psychosis.

The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between social anxiety and social functioning in first episode psychosis, and to determine whether those with psychosis have any maladaptive or irrational beliefs regarding social situations. A sample of 60 first episode patients (41 males, 19 females) participated in the study. The presence of social phobia was determined using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID-I). Measures included The Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory (SPAI), the Social Functioning Scale (SFS), the Quality of Life Scale (QLS) and the Social Interact

Recent developments in research and treatment for social phobia (social anxiety disorder).

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review covers three themes of research that brought fresh data useful for clinical practice in a handicapping anxiety disorder: social phobia. Recent findings deriving from basic biological research, new forms of psychological therapies, and recent psychopharmacology controlled trials are reviewed. RECENT FINDINGS: The basic neuroimaging research suggests that greater activation of the amygdala to novel versus familiar faces may be an underlying trait marker for social phobia. Social phobia may represent a phenotype that expresses a genetically driven trait of social w

Generalized Social Phobia and social judgments: the salience of self- and partner-information.

Individuals with Generalized Social Phobia (GSP, N = 25) and community controls (N = 26) participated in a social interaction task. They then rated how well they had performed in the situation and assigned weights and valences to the different types of information they used to arrive at this judgment. The GSP group weighed anxiety-related self-information more heavily than did the Control group. In contrast, their conversational partners weighed verbal behavior more heavily. These findings are generally supportive of cognitive models of social phobia and point to the negative interpersonal imp

The pharmacologic and expectancy effects of alcohol on social anxiety in individuals with social phobia.

Individuals with social phobia are at an increased risk for alcohol problems. Individuals with social phobia could increase their risk for pathological alcohol use if they drink as a means of coping with anxiety-provoking social situations. Providing a circumscribed test of this view, we evaluate the effect of alcohol on the intensity of social phobia anxiety responses. Sixty-one individuals with social phobia gave two speech challenges in front of a group ('social anxiety challenge'), one occurring before and one after they consumed either: (a) an alcoholic drink they were told contained alco

Factor structure of the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale and the Social Phobia Scale.

In the study of social anxiety, it is common to differentiate between social interaction versus performance anxiety. The Social Interaction Anxiety Scale was designed to assess social interaction anxiety, and the Social Phobia Scale to assess fear of scrutiny by others (Mattick and Clarke, 1989). In common use, these scales are typically administered together and treated as subscales of a larger measure. However, the joint factor structure of these instruments has never been examined; therefore, it is unclear whether or not the items on these scales actually represent distinct aspects of socia

Social cognition and impaired social interaction in people with severe learning difficulties.

Social skills training has focused on 'performance' or overt behaviour, rather than on the other components of successful social functioning: motivation and goals, analysis of social information, and performance feedback, Some basic aspects of this 'analysis' or 'social cognition' component were compared in a preliminary study of 25 teenagers and young adults with severe learning difficulties, whose social interaction was categorized as either 'impaired' or 'appropriate'. As predicted from the literature on autistic children, there were no differences between the groups on tasks involving reco

Social networks and adult social identities: profiles and correlates of support and rejection.

The growth of interest in social networks has underscored the need for integrative analyses of network dimensions. A three-pronged strategy to achieve this objective was pursued in a study of 261 married women nurses. First, network variables related to important adult social identities were differentiated. Factor analyses revealed four network interaction factors: work support, work rejection, general support, and general rejection. An additional factor analysis differentiated work associates from nonwork network members. Second, cluster analysis of these factor scores identified five differe

Neural sensitivity to social feedback and adaptations to changing social contexts in adolescence.

Adolescence has long been recognized as a period of heightened social concern that can lead to negative outcomes including risk-taking and internalizing distress. More recently however, there has been an emerging focus on identifying how enhanced social attunement can promote social connections and prosocial behavior, enhancing wellbeing. In this paper, we argue that neural sensitivity to social evaluation functions as a differential susceptibility factor and propose a model to test whether neurally sensitive adolescents evidence greater changes in psychosocial function as their interpersonal

Social fear memory as a framework for understanding social defeat stress and psychopathology.

Social defeat is a potent stressor in both rodents and humans that, under conditions of chronic or severe stress, can lead to persistent social avoidance. This review synthesizes evidence supporting the view that social defeat promotes the formation of social fear memory through associative learning mechanisms that parallel classical fear conditioning. Drawing on preclinical models, we describe how the context of social defeat functions as a conditioned stimulus, while the experience of defeat serves as an unconditioned stimulus, giving rise to fear-related behaviors such as freezing and socia

Social Media Integration, Social Support, and Depression Among Older Adults.

PURPOSE: Understanding how social media use (SMU) embedded in daily routines influences mental health in older adulthood is crucial. We explored whether integration-based SMU relates to depressive symptoms and whether social support mediates that link, considering online network size. METHOD: A cross-sectional survey of 371 community-dwelling adults aged ≥55 years measured SMU integration, social support, depressive symptoms, demographics, health, and network size. Mediation analysis with bias-corrected bootstrapping assessed direct and indirect paths. RESULTS: Greater SMU integration corres

Neurocognitive mechanisms of social scenario imagery generation in individuals with social anxiety.

Cognitive behavioral theory emphasizes the significant role of mental imagery in the onset and development of Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). However, the neural mechanisms underlying the generation of social scenario imagery in individuals with social anxiety remain unclear. In this study, 28 individuals with social anxiety and 31 healthy controls performed a retrospective cue imagery generation task to examine their neural responses. Behavioral results showed that, compared to negative social scenarios, the vividness of positive social scenario imagery was significantly lower in the social an

Early insight into social network structure predicts climbing the social ladder.

While occupying an influential position within one's social network brings many advantages, it is unknown how certain individuals rise in social prominence. Leveraging a longitudinal dataset that tracks an entirely new network of college freshmen (N = 187), we test whether "climbing the social ladder" depends on knowing how other people are connected to each other. Those who ultimately come to occupy the most influential positions exhibit early and accurate representations of their network's general, abstract structure (i.e., who belongs to which communities and cliques). In contrast, detailed

Evaluation of the Scales for Social Comparison of Appearance and Social Comparison of Well-Being.

People constantly compare their appearance and well-being to that of other individuals. However, a measure of social comparison of well-being is lacking and existing appearance-related social comparison assessment is limited to comparison tendency using predefined social situations. This limits our understanding of the role of social comparison in appearance and well-being. Therefore, we developed the Scale for Social Comparison of Appearance (SSC-A) and the Scale for Social Comparison of Well-Being (SSC-W) to assess upward and downward social comparisons with regard to (a) frequency, (b) perc

Neural tracking of social hierarchies in adolescents' real-world social networks.

In the current study, we combined sociometric nominations and neuroimaging techniques to examine adolescents' neural tracking of peers from their real-world social network that varied in social preferences and popularity. Adolescent participants from an entire school district (N = 873) completed peer sociometric nominations of their grade at school, and a subset of participants (N = 117, Mage = 13.59 years) completed a neuroimaging task in which they viewed peer faces from their social networks. We revealed two neural processes by which adolescents track social preference: (1) the fusiform fac
