Lagged effects of risk factors on the disability of older adults: A distributed lag non-linear model approach.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the lagged and cumulative effects of risk factors on disability in older adults using distributed lag non-linear models (DLNMs). METHODS: We utilized data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). After feature selection via Elastic Net Regularization, we applied DLNMs to evaluate the lagged effects of risk factors. Disability was defined as the presence of any difficulties in basic activities of daily living (BADL). The cumulative relative risk (CRR) was calculated by summing the lag-specific risk estimates, representing the cum

Childhood Maltreatment as Risk Markers for Intimate Partner Sexual Violence: A Meta-Analysis.

Intimate partner sexual violence (IPSV) is a devastating yet often overlooked form of violence around the world. Using social learning theory to guide our study, we examined childhood maltreatment risk factors for IPSV victimization and perpetration among men and women. We searched several databases (PsychInfo, Proquest, Sociological Abstracts, Social Service Abstracts, ERIC, and Proquest Dissertation and Theses) to obtain studies for this meta-analysis. Studies were included in the current meta-analysis if they adhered to the following criteria: (a) examined IPSV exclusively, not combined wit

Is gender-based violence a confluence of culture? Empirical evidence from social media.

Gender-based violence (GBV) has been plaguing our society for long back. The severity of GBV has spurred research around understanding the causes and factors leading to GBV. Understanding factors and causes leading to GBV is helpful in planning and executing efficient policies to curb GBV. Past researches have claimed a country's culture to be one of the driving reasons behind GBV. The culture of a country consists of cultural norms, societal rules, gender-based stereotypes, and social taboos which provoke GBV. These claims are supported by theoretical or small-scale survey-based research that

Female Reproductive Performance and Maternal Birth Month: A Comprehensive Meta-Analysis Exploring Multiple Seasonal Mechanisms.

Globally, maternal birth season affects fertility later in life. The purpose of this systematic literature review is to comprehensively investigate the birth season and female fertility relationship. Using PubMed, we identified a set of 282 relevant fertility/birth season papers published between 1972 and 2018. We screened all 282 studies and removed 131 non-mammalian species studies on fertility and 122 studies that were on non-human mammals. Our meta-analysis focused on the remaining 29 human studies, including twelve human datasets from around the world (USA, Europe, Asia). The main outcome

Childhood adversity and coping among Indigenous university students in Canada: Considerations when examining adverse childhood experiences.

OBJECTIVE: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with health-risk behaviors and chronic disease development. Although valuable, conventional ACE surveys may fail to adequately capture the range of adversities that some communities experience. The primary objective of this study was to investigate whether First Nations and Metis postsecondary students and staff in Ontario identified domains of ACE not captured by conventional ACE surveys. In addition, this study aimed to identify potential coping strategies or factors. METHOD: Qualitative interview and focus group methodologies w

Association of constipation with increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular events in elderly Australian patients.

The association between constipation and cardiovascular risk is unclear. This population-level matched cohort study compared the association of constipation with hypertension and incident cardiovascular events in 541,172 hospitalized patients aged ≥ 60 years. For each constipation admission, one exact age-matched non-constipated admission was randomly selected from all hospitalizations within 2 weeks to form the comparison cohort. The association of constipation with hypertension and cardiovascular events (myocardial infarction, angina, stroke and transient ischemic attack) were analysed using

Expert consensus on personalized initiation of glucose-lowering therapy in adults with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes without clinical cardiovascular disease or chronic kidney disease.

Since it is difficult for clinicians to make a decision among the various types of antidiabetic medications due to their great discrepancy in mechanisms, pharmacological properties, and cardiovascular/renal protection, a relatively "precision" or personalized hypoglycemic treatment suggestion is practical for type 2 diabetes (T2D) management in adults. This expert consensus makes some recommendations based on the characteristics of adult T2D patients without clinical cardiovascular disease (CVD) or chronic kidney disease (CKD) by evidence from large-scale clinical trials. The main consideratio

[Pregnancy interruption from the pediatric viewpoint].

Therapeutic abortion is foremost a biological problem. The abrupt termination of the physiologic phenomenon of pregnancy is a sudden interference with the biology of the interaction between mother and fetus. Therapeutic abortion is also a psychological, a sociological and a political problem. Today therapeutic abortion is legal under certain condition and done by physicians. This review supports therapeutic abortion for prenatally determined abnormalities which have a scientifically high risk of defective offspring especially trisomy 21. Intensive genetic counselling prior to the therapeutic a

A systematic review on the psychological factors behind vaccine hesitancy in the COVID-19 era.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine hesitancy may represent a global threat because of its inherent consequences for health, social and economic systems. Understanding the factors associated with vaccine hesitancy is fundamental to developing effective healthcare policies. While previous studies have mainly focused on sociological and cultural variables and transient illness-specific fears and beliefs, the present systematic review focuses on the psychological factors (such as emotional dispositions, cognitive functioning and expectations, and stable personality traits) associated with vaccine hesitancy durin
