Recycling waste gases from industry is vital for the transition toward a circular economy. The model microbe Clostridium ljungdahlii reduces carbon from syngas and primarily produces acetate and ethanol. Here, a gas fermentation experiment is presented in chemostats with C. ljungdahlii and pure carbon monoxide (CO) as feedstock while entirely omitting yeast extract. alpha-(2-Thienylidene)-gamma-aryl-delta beta,gamma-butenolides 1 are prepared by condensing thiophene-2-aldehyde with beta-aroylpropionic acids in sodium acetate-acetic anhydride mixture. The butenolides react with ammonia in ethanol to give the corresponding 5-oxo-2-pyrrolines 2. Hydrazine hydrate reacts with the butenolides 1 with the formation of the corresponding acrylic acid hydrazides 3. Ring closure of the latter hydrazides with hydrochloric/acetic acid mixture gives the pyridazinones 4. The biological activity of the synthesized compounds is tested against bacterial and yeast strains.

Carboxymethylation of paramylon, a storage polysaccharide of Euglena, was explored using homogeneous and heterogeneous reaction systems. Homogeneous reactions yielded carboxymethyl paramylons with a low degree of substitution of carboxymethyl group (DScm) of ∼0.13. Noninbred Sprague-Dawley rats were administered 1,2-dimethylhydrazine hydrochloride (DMH) by gavage or methylazoxymethanol acetate by sc inoculation. Thereafter, one group was given water to which 0.1% sodium barbiturate was added, and the other was given drug-free water. They were examined 20 weeks after onset of the experiments. A direct relationship was noted between dosage of DMH and numbers of intestinal tumors induced in the rats. The rats provided with sodium barbiturate-supplemented water developed more intestinal tumors than did those that drank drug-free water.

Postoperative necrotizing fasciitis with septicemia caused by Staphylococcus epidermidis was documented by cultures of the blood and wound biopsy specimen. Therapy consisted of surgical debridement, topical application of mafenide acetate dressings, and parenteral administration of cefazolin sodium. The combination effectively reversed the progression of infection and necrosis.

BACKGROUND: Topical preparations, high in phosphate, may cause calcification when used on a damaged corneal surface. The knowledge of the phosphate concentration in medications helps to prevent corneal calcifications. Our study gives an overview of the amount of phosphate contained in ophthalmic corticoid preparations.
METHODS: Samples of 38 commercially available corticoid preparations were tested. The quantification of phosphate was performed using the molybdate method on a Modular P autoanalyzer.
RESULTS: 18 of 38 preparations (47%) had a phosphate concentration above physiological levels

Acidic chitinase (Chia) has been implicated in asthma, allergic inflammations, and food processing. We have purified Chia enzymes with striking acid stability and protease resistance from chicken and pig stomach tissues using a chitin column and 8 M urea (urea-Chia).
