Tailored design of a novel composite foam of sodium alginate used for fluoride ion removal.

Fluoride is an essential micronutrient for humans. Nonetheless, when the amount of fluoride ion is greater than required, it will cause skeletal fluorosis and dental fluorosis to threaten human health. In this paper, a series of sodium alginate (SA)-based foam materials are prepared by freeze-drying technique and anchored with the nano-activated alumina (nAl2O3) in the SA to obtain a novel adsorbent of SA-nAl2O3 foam used for fluoride ions removal. The SA-nAl2O3 foam morphology was further explored and confirmed that nAl2O3 existed stably in the SA. The adsorption results showed that the maxim

The effect of sodium fluoride on the stability of cyanide in postmortem blood samples from fire victims.

Assigning a level of significance to cyanide concentrations found in the blood of fire victims is often hampered by the fact that cyanide is inherently unstable in cadavers and in stored blood samples. A few researchers have proposed that sodium fluoride can be used to minimize the instability of cyanide in blood samples; however, controlled studies have not been performed to support validation of this hypothesis. To test the sodium fluoride hypothesis, both treated and control blood samples from 14 autopsied fire victims were tested over a 25-30 day period. A 2% concentration of sodium fluori

Interactions and effects of a stannous-containing sodium fluoride dentifrice on oral pathogens and the oral microbiome.

Numerous studies have investigated the effects of stannous ions on specific microbes and their efficacy in reducing dental plaque. Nonetheless, our understanding of their impact on the oral microbiome is still a subject of ongoing exploration. Therefore, this study sought to evaluate the effects of a stannous-containing sodium fluoride dentifrice in comparison to a zinc-containing sodium fluoride dentifrice and a control group on intact, healthy oral biofilms. Utilizing the novel 2bRAD-M approach for species-resolved metagenomics, and FISH/CLSM with probes targeting periodontal and caries asso

Effects of 2% sodium fluoride solution on the prevention of streptococcal adhesion to titanium and zirconia surfaces.

Streptococci are associated with dental plaque formation as the early-colonizing bacteria that adhere to titanium (CpTi) and zirconia (TZP) implant abutment surfaces. Effective prevention of peri-implantitis may be possible by removing streptococci as target. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of 2% NaF on the prevention of streptococcal adhesion to CpTi and TZP. After immersion in 2% NaF for 90 min, surface characterization of mirror-polished CpTi and TZP disks were assesed using XPS, EPMA, and SEM. S. sanguinis, S. gordonii, and S. oralis were used as the streptococcal bacterial strain

Diagnosis and Monitoring of Osteoporosis With 18F-Sodium Fluoride PET: An Unavoidable Path for the Foreseeable Future.

The prevalence of metabolic bone diseases particularly osteoporosis and its precursor, osteopenia, continue to grow as serious global health issues today. On a worldwide perspective, 200million people suffer from osteoporosis and in 2005, over 2million fracture incidents were estimated due to osteoporosis in the United States. Currently, osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases are evaluated primarily through dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, and rarely by bone biopsy with tetracycline labeling or Technetium-99m (99mTc) based bone scintigraphy. Deficiencies in these methods have prompted

[Histoenzymatic study of the liver and submandibular gland of rats exposed to sodium fluoride in drinking water].

PURPOSE: Universal use of fluorine compounds in dentistry, as well as industrial and civilization-related exposures may produce undesirable effects of fluorine action. The effects of fluoride ions depend on the dose and exposure time. Some may be positive, e.g. in caries prevention, while others are harmful when optimal prophylactic or therapeutic doses have been surpassed. The literature is replete with reports on interactions of fluoride ions with the activity of many enzymes and indirectly with cellular metabolism. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The paper presents the results of a histoenzymatic st

Intraoral evaluation of mineralization of cosmetic defects by a toothpaste containing calcium, fluoride, and sodium bicarbonate.

New dual-phase fluoride toothpastes that contain soluble calcium, phosphate, and baking soda have recently been introduced into the market. These toothpastes are designed to fill in small surface defects in tooth enamel and thereby enhance tooth esthetics such as gloss. This two-part study was designed to assess these superficial mineralizing effects from using one of these products compared with an experimental calcium-containing, bicarbonate-free formulation and a conventional fluoride toothpaste using an intraoral model. Enamel specimens with 4 types of defects were mounted into an intraora

Efficacy of 1% sodium fluoride as a preservative in urine samples containing glucose and Candida albicans.

Whether urine samples used in forensic science DUI testing can be compromised by endogenous ethanol production is a recurrent and yet unresolved issue. This study first assessed unpreserved urine samples that were collected, processed, and analyzed repeatedly over 13 to 41 days using a standard gas chromatographic procedure for ethanol analysis. Despite extensive microbial growth, ethanol was not detected in any test sample. The extent of ethanol production in samples supplemented with glucose, Candida albicans, or both was determined to evaluate the potential for ethanol production in urine s

Investigations into the mechanism by which sodium fluoride stimulates prostaglandin production in guinea-pig uterus.

Sodium fluoride (10 mM) caused a slow increase in the outputs of PGF-2 alpha, 6-keto-PGF-1 alpha and, to a lesser extent, PGE-2 from the Day-7 and Day-15 guinea-pig uterus superfused in vitro. This stimulatory action of sodium fluoride was not prevented by using calcium-free Krebs' solution. There was also a faster stimulation of 6-keto-PGF-1 alpha output from the Day-7 guinea-pig uterus produced by sodium fluoride, and this quicker response was abolished by using calcium-free Krebs' solution. TMB-8 (an intracellular calcium antagonist) inhibited the stimulatory action of sodium fluoride on th
