Reliability of results of the Rose Bengal test performed for export control in northern Somalia.

Sera from sheep and goats in northern Somalia which are exported to countries of the Persian Gulf are systematically checked for brucellosis by local veterinary teams. The standard test used is rapid seroagglutination using the Rose Bengal test (RBT) and seropositive animals are not exported. In order to assess the reliability of the serological results, three randomised batches of samples (653 sera), corresponding to an equivalent number of shipments (October and December 1994 and March 1995) were counterchecked. Control RBTs were carried out by expatriate veterinarians working on behalf of i

Visceral leishmaniasis in Somalia: prevalence of leishmanin-positive and seropositive inhabitants in an endemic area.

In an endemic area of Somalia both humoral and cell mediated immunity against Leishmania donovani was demonstrated in 246 inhabitants. In a study of 14 patients with active visceral leishmaniasis, we found that antibodies appear early in infection and that they are then demonstrable for a limited period only. Leishmanin positivity develops later and persists longer, but does not seem to be lifelong. The majority of the immunoreactive individuals were either sero- or leishmanin positive. This finding is in accord with the result obtained in recent experimental studies indicating a regulatory ef

Fragmented Data, Fragmented Care: Strengthening Health Information Systems for Universal Health Coverage in Somalia.

Health information systems (HISs) are essential for achieving universal health coverage (UHC), yet Somalia's health sector remains constrained by fragmented data systems, weak interoperability, limited infrastructure, workforce shortages, and poor governance. This commentary examines the challenges undermining Somalia's digital health transformation and argues that fragmented information systems perpetuate fragmented healthcare delivery. Despite emerging reforms and adoption of digital platforms, such as DHIS2, progress toward UHC remains limited. This commentary draws on a narrative synthesis

Handwashing practices and associated factors among public primary schoolchildren in the Benadir Region, Somalia.

BACKGROUND: In Somalia, numerous schools lack adequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities, which is associated with a high burden of diarrheal and respiratory infections among school-aged children. Despite this, there is a paucity of data on handwashing practices and their associated factors, particularly in the Benadir Region. This study evaluated handwashing practices and identified factors associated with proper handwashing among primary schoolchildren in the Benadir Region of Somalia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in schools From January 1 to January 31, 202

Distinct Chemotypes of Putative Commiphora gileadensis (L.) C.Chr. Resins from Israel, Oman and Somalia.

Commiphora gileadensis (L.) C.Chr. has long been regarded as the most likely botanical source of the historical apharsemon (Balm of Gilead). Despite considerable historical interest, little is known about the chemical variability of geographically separated populations currently assigned to this taxon. In the present study, resin samples obtained from putative C. gileadensis accessions originating from Ein Gedi (Israel), Oman, and a Somalia-derived accession cultivated in Yotvata, Israel, were analyzed by GC-MS. In addition, freshly collected resin from the Somalia-derived accession was compar

Traditional Eye Medicine in Rural Somalia: Culturally Safe Harm Reduction to Prevent Corneal Blindness.

Traditional eye medicine (TEM) remains widely practiced across rural Somalia, where distance, poverty, limited eye care workforce, and low health literacy constrain access to timely biomedical services. Commonly reported practices include instillation of aloe vera liquid or gel, expressed human breast milk, honey, and plant derived sap or rubbed tree material to relieve redness, photophobia, and ocular pain. While these practices are culturally embedded and may be perceived as effective, the ocular surface is uniquely vulnerable to toxicity, microbial contamination, and delayed presentation, f

Giant Infarcted Lactating Adenoma Mimicking Inflammatory Breast Carcinoma: A First Case Report from Somalia.

A lactating adenoma is a rare and benign breast tumor that usually occurs during pregnancy or lactation period for women. These adenomas are typically small, <3 centimeters, well circumscribed, mobile, and lobulated masses, and are most commonly witnessed in primiparous women (those having their first child) between the ages of 20 and 40 years during the third trimester of their pregnancies due to hormonal changes. In this case report, we describe an unusual variant of lactating adenoma that is characterized by the ischemic infarction of breast tissue and its giant dimensions, surpassing 16 ce

Seroprevalence of transfusion transmissible infections (TTIS) among blood donors in SOS hospital Heliwa, Somalia.

BACKGROUND: A transfusion-transmissible infection (TTI) refers to any infection that can be spread from one person to another through the injection of blood or blood products. The prevalence of these infections varies across countries, influenced by the disease burden within each population. To assess the severity of TTIs, the World Health Organization (WHO) has mandated pre-transfusion blood tests for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), and syphilis. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence and trends of TTIs among blood donors at SOS

Yellow fever immunity surveys in northern Uganda and Kenya and eastern Somalia, 1966-67.

Recent epidemics of yellow fever in eastern Africa have stimulated serological surveys in the Karamoja district of Uganda, the northern frontier district of Kenya and the Giohar district of Somalia. All sera collected in the surveys were screened for group B arbovirus antibody using the HI test. Yellow fever immunity was confirmed by the mouse-protection test.No yellow fever immunity was found in sera collected from a residential tribal group at Karamoja but a small number of samples from persons who had previously lived outside the district showed immunity. Immunity was detected in sera from

Strengthening pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response in Somalia: strategic implications of health security financing.

The approval of Somalia's proposal under the third call for proposals from the Pandemic Fund represents a major achievement in strengthening the country's pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response (PPR) efforts. The award, totaling approximately $25 million from the Pandemic Fund and nearly US$120 million in co-financing and in-kind contributions from international partners and government sources, demonstrates growing international confidence in Somalia's reform efforts and in its ability to implement multi-sectoral preparedness initiatives. Somalia is part of a priority group for the Pa

Beyond Surgical Repair: Psychosocial Recovery and Social Reintegration for Obstetric Fistula Survivors in Somalia.

Obstetric fistula is a preventable childbirth injury with profound physical, psychological, social, and economic consequences for women. In Somalia, fistula reflects delayed access to skilled childbirth care and emergency obstetric services, but its effects continue long after the clinical injury. Drawing on Somalia-specific evidence and relevant global literature, this commentary argues that fistula care should move beyond a procedure-centered model toward a survivor-centered continuum of psychosocial recovery and social reintegration. Surgical repair remains essential, yet recovery is incomp

Public Health Challenges in Somalia: Strengthening Health Systems for Resilient and Equitable Healthcare Delivery.

Somalia continues to face multidimensional public health challenges driven by prolonged conflict, political instability, fragmented governance, climate-related disasters, displacement, poverty, and a fragile health system. The country carries a dual burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases (NCDs), alongside persistently high maternal and child mortality and recurrent nutrition and WASH emergencies. These pressures are intensified by workforce shortages, limited laboratory and surveillance capacity, unequal access to care, and heavy dependence on externally financed programmes. In t
