We recorded somatosensory evoked potentials in pentobarbital-anesthetized rats before and after middle cerebral artery occlusion. Trigeminal (vibrissae), median (forelimb), and sciatic (hind limb) nerve stimuli produced consistent, robust, and sharply localized responses in the trigeminal, forelimb, and hind limb regions of the somatosensory cortex of 18 rats. These regions are situated at sequentially greater distances from the center of infarcts produced by middle cerebral artery occlusion. In eight rats, occlusion 1-2 mm below the rhinal fissure abolished somatosensory evoked potentials in

BACKGROUND: Anesthesia is featured by behavioral and physiological characteristics such as decreased sensory and motor function, loss of consciousness, etc. Some anesthetics such as dexmedetomidine (DEX), induce electroencephalogram signatures close to non-rapid eye movement sleep. Studies have shown that sleep is primarily driven by the activation of subcortical sleep-promoting neural pathways.
AIMS: However, the neuronal level electrophysiology features of anesthesia and how they differ from sleep is still not fully understood.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the present study, we recorded neuro

The brain's representation of hand position is critical for voluntary movement. Representation is multisensory, combining visual and proprioceptive cues. When these cues conflict, the brain recalibrates its unimodal estimates, shifting them closer together to compensate. Research suggests such updates to body representation are communicated to the motor system to keep hand movements accurate. The neural mechanism is unclear and may depend on how the brain integrates and recalibrates visuoproprioceptive signals: models ranging from hierarchical convergence after unisensory processing to more di

Cannabinoid and serotonin systems regulate many biological processes. The aim of the present study was to investigate the functional interaction between the cannabinoid and serotonergic systems of the primary somatosensory region (S1) of the brain in epileptiform activity caused by penicillin. The ACEA (an agonist of CB1 receptor), AM‑251 (an antagonist of CB1 receptor), 8‑OH‑DPAT (an agonist of 5‑HT1A receptor) and WAY‑100635 (an antagonist of 5‑HT1A receptor) were administered into the S1 after the same site administration of penicillin in urethane‑anesthetized rats. Cortical remapping after hand loss in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) is thought to be predominantly dictated by cortical proximity, with adjacent body parts remapping into the deprived area. Traditionally, this remapping has been characterised by changes in the lip representation, which is assumed to be the immediate neighbour of the hand based on electrophysiological research in non-human primates. However, the orientation of facial somatotopy in humans is debated, with contrasting work reporting both an inverted and upright topography. We aimed to fill this gap in the S1 homunculus by

Deficits in sensory processing in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) implicate dysfunction in the somatosensory cortex. However, the effects of prenatal ethanol exposure on the development of this region await elucidation. Here, we used an established mouse model of FASD with binge-type ethanol exposure from embryonic day 13.5-16.5 to investigate the effects of prenatal ethanol exposure on pyramidal neurons in the somatosensory cortex. Specifically, we focused on the radial migration of primordial pyramidal neurons during embryonic corticogenesis and their morphology and function during a

The representation of the oral structures in the lateralmost part of the postcentral somatosensory cortex in conscious macaque monkeys was studied by recording the activities of single neurons. A total of 104 penetrations were made in the oral regions of six hemispheres in four animals and 2,292 neurons were isolated. The characteristics of the receptive fields (RF) of 1,598 neurons were identified. Of them, 513 neurons (area 3b, 196; area 1, 104; area 2, 213) along 44 penetrations responded to mechanical stimulation of the tongue (tongue neurons). The relative incidence of tongue neurons that

We characterized the organization of corticostriatal projections from rodent primary somatosensory cortex (SI), testing the hypothesis that projections from SI areas representing subcomponents of the forelimb exhibit greater neostriatal overlap than projections from areas representing separate body parts. The anterograde tracers Fluoro-Ruby (FR), Alexa Fluor (AF), and biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) were injected into physiologically identified regions of rat SI. Injection locations were confirmed by examining the SI barrel fields and limb representations in tangential sections processed for

Autoradiography has been used to visualize independently the subtypes of beta-adrenergic receptors in rat somatosensory cortex. Beta 2-Adrenergic receptors, but not beta 1-adrenergic receptors colocalize with "whisker barrels" in this tissue. Thus, each whisker sends a specific multisynaptic pathway to the somatosensory cortex that can be histochemically visualized and only one subtype of beta-adrenergic receptor is specifically associated with this cortical representation. Additionally, neonatal lesion of any or all of the whisker follicles results in loss of the corresponding barrel(s) as sh

Recent data have shown that the structure and function of layer V pyramidal neurons, e.g. corticospinal neurons, is altered by prenatal exposure to ethanol. We examined the effect of ethanol on the ultrastructure of layer V in somatosensory cortex. Timed pregnant rats were fed a diet containing 6.7% (v/v) ethanol (E) or pair-fed a nutritionally matched control diet (C). Thirty-day-old offspring of these mothers were prepared by standard electron microscopic techniques. The somata of pyramidal and local circuit neurons and the neuropil were analysed. Prenatal exposure to ethanol induced alterat

The convergence of visceral and somatic afferent systems in the secondary somatosensory areas of the cat cortex was studied by means of evoked potentials. The suprathreshold stimulation of the sciatic and brachial plexus nerves depressed the test potentials evoked by the pelvic and mesenteric nerves stimulation. Maximal depression was observed at paired stimulation of visceral nerves. Comparison of the data obtained with mono- and bimodal stimulation suggests that duration of the response restoration period depends on the functional groups of neurons.

1. Drugs were applied to the cerebral cortex of rats anaesthetized with pentobarbitone and changes measured in the somatosensory primary evoked response.2. Computer-derived averages of thirty-two consecutive responses yielded stable and consistent measurements of the potential changes comprising the evoked response, and comparable records from the opposite (non-drug treated) cortex provided an essential control for systemic actions of the drug.3. The modifications produced by curare and strychnine were indistinguishable. The first positive wave (peak latency 7 msec) was unaltered; the second p

During development, critical periods of synaptic plasticity facilitate the reordering and refinement of neural connections, allowing the definitive synaptic circuits responsible for correct adult physiology to be established. The L4-L2/3 synapses in the somatosensory cortex (S1) exhibit a presynaptic form of spike timing-dependent long-term depression (t-LTD) that probably fulfills a role in synaptic refinement. This t-LTD persists until the fourth postnatal week in mice, disappearing thereafter. When we investigated the mechanisms underlying this maturation-related loss of t-LTD in either sex

Transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique consisting in the application of weak electric currents on the scalp. Although previous studies have demonstrated the clinical value of tDCS for modulating sensory, motor, and cognitive functions, there are still huge gaps in the knowledge of the underlying physiological mechanisms. To define the immediate impact as well as the after effects of tDCS on sensory processing, we first performed electrophysiological recordings in primary somatosensory cortex (S1) of alert mice during and after administratio

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve injury causes physiological changes in primary afferent neurons. Neuropathic pain associated with peripheral nerve injuries may reflect changes in the excitability of the nervous system, including the spinothalamic tract. Current alternative medical research indicates that acupuncture stimulation has analgesic effects in various pain symptoms. However, activation changes in the somatosensory cortex of the brain by acupuncture stimulation remain poorly understood. The present study was conducted to monitor the changes in cortical excitability, using optical imaging

Chronic pain is caused by injury or inflammation of the peripheral tissues and by abnormal activities in the central nervous system including the spinal cord area related to generation and maintenance of chronic pain. In the cerebral cortex, several areas respond to noxious stimulation. Since activities of these cortical areas are enhanced in chronic pain conditions, not only a single cortical area, but also the interaction between multiple cortical areas seems to contribute to chronic pain. The primary somatosensory cortex (S1), which is one of the pain-related cortical areas, plays a role in

OBJECTIVE: Our study is to investigate somatosensory dysfunction in children with spastic cerebral palsy (CP) using magnetoencephalography (MEG) and synthetic aperture magnetometry (SAM).
METHODS: Six children with spastic CP and six age- and gender-matched typically developing children were studied using a 275-channel MEG system while their left and right index fingers were stimulated in random order. The latency and amplitude of somatosensory evoked magnetic fields were analyzed at sensor level. The patterns of high-gamma oscillations were investigated with SAM at source level.
RESULTS: In

Bats are the only mammals capable of true powered flight. The bat wing exhibits specializations, allowing these animals to perform complicated flight maneuvers like landing upside-down, and hovering. The wing membrane contains various tactile receptors, including hair-associated Merkel receptors that might be involved in stabilizing bat flight. Here, we studied the neuronal representation of the wing membrane in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) of the anesthetized Big Brown Bat, Eptesicus fuscus, using tactile stimulation with calibrated monofilaments (von Frey hairs) while recording from

Previous studies have demonstrated that peripheral denervation of the skin is reflected in the CNS as a reorganization of somatotopic representations. In cases in which peripheral nerve regeneration occurs there is a gradual reactivation of cortex by novel receptive fields that is reversed as regenerated nerves reestablish connections with the original skin surface. Functional recovery appears to depend on the pattern in which somatotopic organization in the cortex is reestablished. The relationship between functional recovery and cortical topography is not precise, however, since the descript

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We know remarkably little about the mechanisms underlying cortical activation. Such mechanisms might be better understood by studying the effect of well-localized lesions on the cortical activations in simple paradigms.
METHODS: We used H(2)(15)O and positron emission tomography to measure regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) at rest and during hand vibration in 7 patients with unilateral thalamic lesion involving the ventroposterior (VP) somatosensory thalamic relay nuclei. We compared the results with those obtained in 6 patients with thalamic lesions sparing the VP n
