Glissando: laryngeal motorics and acoustics.

The objective of this study was to investigate the laryngeal mechanisms and the acoustical signal during a glissando. In particular, glottal length, maximum glottal area, and vibratory amplitudes during a glissando maneuver of a healthy male adult were measured. An endoscopic high-speed system combined with a laser projection device was used to obtain quantitative data both in the time and spatial domains. Simultaneously to the endoscopic investigation, the acoustic signal was recorded. Fundamental frequency and sound pressure level derived from the acoustic recordings were compared to vocal f

[Phonorhinorheometric study and laryngeal sonography in subjects affected by velopharyngeal insufficiency].

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the validity of combining two non invasive diagnostic approaches, (photorhinorheometry and sonography) in order study phonatory pathology in subjects suffering from velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI). Twenty-six patients with nasal air escape during phonation and/or hyperrhinophonia due to to VPI were evaluated employing both methods. Phonorhinorheometry permitted air escape through the nasal cavities during phonation to be evaluated. Compartmentalization of the pharyngeal and nasal resonators during phonation was measured through MCF (maximal conso

Noninvasive detection of intracranial vascular lesions using an electronic stethoscope.

Using an electronic stethoscope, the authors have attempted noninvasive detection of intracranial aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVM's), and carotid cavernous fistulas in 45 patients. A microphone of older design and a newly designed horn-coupled probe microphone were used to record the sound signals emanating from the cranium. A trigger pulse recorded by another microphone placed over the carotid area or the precordium was used to time the intracranial signals. The sound signals were converted to electrical signals, amplified, filtered, and analyzed using fast Fourier transformation

Effects of surrounding tissue on the sound spectrum of arterial bruits in vivo.

Turbulent flow distal to arterial stenoses producers bruits with a characteristic sound spectrum, analysis of which has permitted accurate non-invasive assessment of the residual lumen diameter of the stenosis in the case of the human carotid artery. In contrast, investigators working with in vitro elastic models of arteries or with excised vessels have reported finding mainly resonant spectra of bruits recorded distal to stenoses. We have studied the effects of turbulent flow on the sound spectrum produced at the arterial wall and the influence of surrounding tissue on this spectrum. Aortic,

Use of Transfer Learning for the Automated Segmentation and Detection of Swallows via Digital Cervical Auscultation in Children.

Digital cervical auscultation (CA) has high diagnostic test accuracy in the detection of aspiration in children. However, the clinical application of digital CA is limited because swallow sound recordings require manual segmentation by trained experts, which is time consuming and not feasible in clinical practice. The automated detection of swallowing sounds in adults from sound recordings have reported accuracies between 76 and 95%. No equivalent literature exists for the automated detection of swallowing sounds in children. This study aimed to establish whether automated machine learning usi

[Contoursonagraphic analysis of heart sound phenomena and sounds produced by various heart valve prostheses].

The normal heart sounds, murmurs, opening and closing sounds of aortic and mitral valve prostheses were recorded on a tape and analyzed in terms of contour sonagrams in order to obtain the highest frequencies which were recordable on the chest wall. The peak frequencies showed a broad range, the maximum beeing reached at about 8000 c.p.s. in the case of the sounds of prosthetic valves. Furthermore, sound level examinations of the normal first and second heart sound, as well as of the opening and closing sounds of the aortic valve prostheses were performed. The highest sound level of all of the

Slow oscillatory changes of DPOAE magnitude and phase after exposure to intense low-frequency sounds.

Sensitive sound detection within the mammalian cochlea is performed by hair cells surrounded by cochlear fluids. Maintenance of cochlear fluid homeostasis and tight regulation of intracellular conditions in hair cells are crucial for the auditory transduction process but can be impaired by intense sound stimulation. After a short, intense low-frequency sound, the cochlea shows the previously described "bounce phenomenon," which manifests itself as slow oscillatory changes of hearing thresholds and otoacoustic emissions. In this study, distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) were reco

Digital Pulmonology Practice with Phonopulmography Leveraging Artificial Intelligence: Future Perspectives Using Dual Microwave Acoustic Sensing and Imaging.

Respiratory disorders, being one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, account for constant evolution in management technologies, resulting in the incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) in the recording and analysis of lung sounds to aid diagnosis in clinical pulmonology practice. Although lung sound auscultation is a common clinical practice, its use in diagnosis is limited due to its high variability and subjectivity. We review the origin of lung sounds, various auscultation and processing methods over the years and their clinical applications to understand the potential for

Development of a Smartphone App for Visualizing Heart Sounds and Murmurs.

BACKGROUND: Auscultation is one of the basic techniques for the diagnosis of heart disease. However, the interpretation of heart sounds and murmurs is a highly subjective and difficult skill. OBJECTIVES: To assist the auscultation skill at the bedside, a handy phonocardiogram was developed using a smartphone (Samsung Galaxy J, Android OS 4.4.2) and an external microphone attached to a stethoscope. METHODS AND RESULTS: The Android app used Java classes, "AudioRecord," "AudioTrack," and "View," that recorded sounds, replayed sounds, and plotted sound waves, respectively. Sound waves were visua

Phonocephalography extra-cephalic.

Phonocephalography is the amplification and recording of sounds from the surface and cavities of the head aiming for the introduction of a non-invasive pre-angiographic technique. Nasopharyngeal Phonocephalography was found successful for recording of normal tracing. The effect of the extra-cephalic sounds and factors on the tracing were discussed. Phonomyelography is the application of the idea on the vertebral column. The tracing recorded was demonstrated. Modern technology has undergone considerable progress for the introduction of non-invasive techniques in medical diagnosis. Since Laennec

Using voice-recognition technology to eliminate cardiac cycle segmentation in automated heart sound diagnosis.

Advanced digital signal processing has the potential to revolutionize the stethoscope through the use of mathematical algorithms to interpret heart sound acoustic information. In this study, a novel classification algorithm that does not require cardiac cycle segmentation was used for identifying differences between normal and diseased heart sounds. The heart sound signals were not separated into systole and diastole. A recordable electronic stethoscope was used to record the heart sounds of 163 echocardiogram patients. Mel-cepstrum and Principal Components Analysis were applied to the 60 reco

Peristimulus Time Responses Predict Adaptation and Spontaneous Firing of Auditory-Nerve Fibers: From Rodents Data to Humans.

Sound-level coding in the auditory nerve is achieved through the progressive recruitment of auditory nerve fibers (ANFs) that differ in threshold of activation and in the stimulus level at which the spike rate saturates. To investigate the functional state of the ANFs, the electrophysiological tests routinely used in clinics only capture the first action potentials firing in synchrony at the onset of the acoustic stimulation. Assessment of other properties (e.g., spontaneous rate and adaptation time constants) requires single-fiber recordings directly from the nerve, which for ethical reasons

Outer Hair Cell Glutamate Signaling through Type II Spiral Ganglion Afferents Activates Neurons in the Cochlear Nucleus in Response to Nondamaging Sounds.

Cochlear outer hair cells (OHCs) are known to uniquely participate in auditory processing through their electromotility, and like inner hair cells, are also capable of releasing vesicular glutamate onto spiral ganglion (SG) neurons: in this case, onto the sparse Type II SG neurons. However, unlike glutamate signaling at the inner hair cell-Type I SG neuron synapse, which is robust across a wide spectrum of sound intensities, glutamate signaling at the OHC-Type II SG neuron synapse is weaker and has been hypothesized to occur only at intense, possibly damaging sound levels. Here, we tested the

[A heart sound classification method based on joint decision of extreme gradient boosting and deep neural network].

Heart sound is one of the common medical signals for diagnosing cardiovascular diseases. This paper studies the binary classification between normal or abnormal heart sounds, and proposes a heart sound classification algorithm based on the joint decision of extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) and deep neural network, achieving a further improvement in feature extraction and model accuracy. First, the preprocessed heart sound recordings are segmented into four status, and five categories of features are extracted from the signals based on segmentation. The first four categories of features are

A Novel Method for Measuring the Timing of Heart Sound Components through Digital Phonocardiography.

The auscultation of heart sounds has been for decades a fundamental diagnostic tool in clinical practice. Higher effectiveness can be achieved by recording the corresponding biomedical signal, namely the phonocardiographic signal, and processing it by means of traditional signal processing techniques. An unavoidable processing step is the heart sound segmentation, which is still a challenging task from a technical viewpoint-a limitation of state-of-the-art approaches is the unavailability of trustworthy techniques for the detection of heart sound components. The aim of this work is to design a
