Effects of Myofibrillar Protein-Stabilized Soybean Oil Pre-Emulsions Containing Arabic Gum or Gallic Acid-Grafted Arabic Gum on the Quality Characteristics and Oxidative Stability of Reduced-Animal-Fat Emulsified Sausages.

Soybean oil-based pre-emulsions stabilized by myofibrillar protein (MP), Arabic gum (AG), or gallic acid-grafted Arabic gum (GA-AG) were used to partially (50%) or fully (100%) replace pork back fat in Western-style emulsified sausages. The present study investigated the effects of such replacement on the initial quality attributes and lipid oxidation stability of sausages during storage. Compared with sausages formulated with pure pork back fat, pre-emulsion substitution significantly reduced cooking loss and improved textural characteristics, especially hardness and springiness. Incorporatin…

Supercritical CO2-Assisted Fabrication of Environmentally Friendly Poly(Propylene Carbonate)/Poly(Butylene Adipate-co-Terephthalate)/Epoxidized Soybean Oil (PPC/PBAT/ESO) Lightweight Open-Cell Foams With Excellent Degradability and Thermal Insulation Properties.

Driven by the increasing severity of plastic pollution, biodegradable polymers such as poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC), owing to their biodegradability, gas barrier properties, and CO2-fixing capability, have attracted considerable attention as alternatives to conventional plastics. In this work, PPC/poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT)/epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) composite foams were successfully fabricated via an environmentally friendly supercritical CO2 foaming process. The results demonstrate that ESO, acting as a reactive compatibilizer, forms chemical linkages between PPC and…

Fatty acids, lipid emulsions and the immune and inflammatory systems.

Fatty acids modulate the responses of cells of the immune system. Inflammatory and immune responses in patients receiving parenteral nutrition may be modulated by the type of lipid used, which may influence clinical outcomes. Lipid emulsions based solely upon soybean oil may not be optimal because of the role of n-6 fatty acids in promoting inflammation and suppressing immune responses. Lipid emulsions with soybean oil in various combinations with medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), olive oil and fish oil are available. Some early studies have suggested better immune function with MCT-soybean o…

Intestinal failure-associated liver disease model: a reduced phytosterol intravenous lipid emulsion prevents liver injury.

BACKGROUND: Long-term parenteral nutrition in children often results in intestinal failure-associated liver disease (IFALD). Phytosterols are plant steroids in vegetable oil-based intravenous lipid emulsions (ILEs) that are associated with IFALD. We investigated whether a phytosterol-depleted soybean oil ILE, compared to standard soybean oil ILE, prevented hepatotoxicity in a murine IFALD model. METHODS: Eight-week-old male C57BL/6 J mice were provided a fat-free high carbohydrate liquid diet for 19 days. Mice were intravenously administered ILEs as the sole fat source: Intralipid® (commercia…

Soybean oil supplementation of a high-concentrate diet does not affect site and extent of organic matter, starch, neutral detergent fiber, or nitrogen digestion, but influences both ruminal metabolism and intestinal flow of fatty acids in limit-fed lambs.

Our objective was to measure ruminal fermentation characteristics and site and extent of nutrient digestion in sheep limit-fed an 81.6% (DM basis) concentrate diet supplemented with increasing levels of soybean oil. Eight white-faced wether lambs (39.9+/-3.0 kg BW) fitted with ruminal, duodenal, and ileal cannulas were used in a replicated 4 x 4 Latin square experiment. Diets were formulated to contain 15.0% CP (DM basis) and included bromegrass hay (18.4%), cracked corn, soybean oil, corn gluten meal, urea, and limestone. Soybean oil was added to diets at 0, 3.2, 6.3, and 9.4% of dietary DM. …

Effects of oil types on the stability of oil-in-water emulsions prepared using Dioscorea opposita mucilage and gums.

To evaluate the effects of different oil types (mandarin oil, soybean oil, and fish oil) on emulsion stability, oil-in-water emulsions were prepared using Dioscorea opposita mucilage and food-grade gums (guar gum, xanthan gum, and pectin). Key indicators, such as droplet size, turbidity, interfacial tension, and rheological properties, were characterized. Soybean oil emulsions exhibited superior 21-day storage stability, with smaller droplet sizes (56.98 nm) and enhanced apparent viscosity (50.82 Pa·s). Notably, the pectin-Dioscorea opposita mucilage-soybean oil emulsions (1:10:25, weight rati…

Quantifying the land-use change due to soybean-based biodiesel in the United States.

We quantify the impact of soybean oil-based biodiesel production on US cropland, using a method that accounts for the intermediate effect of soybean crushing facilities. Based on U.S. Environmental Protection Agency data for biodiesel production and proprietary data for soybean crushing facilities over 2011-2020, we find that the elasticities of soybean acreage and total cropland acreage with respect to soybean oil-based biodiesel production are 0.011 and 0.002, respectively. The direct land-use effect of soybean oil-based biodiesel is about 0.96 million acres of cropland expansion per billion…

Influence of different intravenous lipid emulsions on fatty acid status and laboratory and clinical outcomes in adult patients receiving home parenteral nutrition: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Patients who have chronic intestinal failure require home parenteral nutrition (HPN) support. Intravenous lipid emulsions (IVLEs) are a vital part of HPN. The conventional IVLE is based on pure soybean oil, which contains a high concentration of omega-6 fatty acids. Alternative IVLEs are commercially available. These contain various oil blends and have different fatty acid compositions from soybean oil that could provide benefit to patients on HPN. The aim of this systematic review is to assess the effects of different IVLEs in adult patients requiring HPN. METHODS: A syste…

Intestinal fat suppresses protein-induced exocrine pancreatic secretion in chronically bile-pancreatic juice-diverted rats.

Previously, we showed that the increase in pancreatic enzyme secretion was lower after feeding a casein diet containing fat than that after feeding a fat-free casein diet in chronically bile-pancreatic juice (BPJ)-diverted rats. In the present study, we determined whether the suppressive effects of fats on flow volume of BPJ and pancreatic enzyme secretion depend on delaying gastric emptying and examined the characteristics of the suppression with intraduodenal instillation of soybean oil or lecithin in BPJ-diverted rats. The study was conducted as three separate experiments using conscious ra…

Oil phase-driven nanoemulsions improve CoQ10 stability, in vitro bioaccessibility and ex vivo intestinal uptake.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) exhibits important bioactive and health-promoting functions, yet its poor water solubility and low bioaccessibility restrict its wider application in food and nutraceutical formulations. In this study, CoQ10-loaded nanoemulsions were fabricated using high-pressure homogenization with three edible oil phases (sunflowerseed oil, flaxseed oil, and soybean oil) to elucidate how oil phase composition governs physicochemical behavior, digestive fate, and absorption. All nanoemulsions showed high encapsulation efficiency (98.2%, 97.8%, and 98.0%), while flaxseed oil produced the …

Fish Oil Accelerates Diet-Induced Entrainment of the Mouse Peripheral Clock via GPR120.

The circadian peripheral clock is entrained by restricted feeding (RF) at a fixed time of day, and insulin secretion regulates RF-induced entrainment of the peripheral clock in mice. Thus, carbohydrate-rich food may be ideal for facilitating RF-induced entrainment, although the role of dietary oils in insulin secretion and RF-induced entrainment has not been described. The soybean oil component of standard mouse chow was substituted with fish or soybean oil containing docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and/or eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Tuna oil (high DHA/EPA), menhaden oil (standard), and DHA/EPA di…

[Presumed anaphylactic shock after infusion of Lipofundin].

A case of anaphylactic shock in a 45 year old man with Hodgkin's disease following Lipofundin infusion is described. Lipofundin is a soybean oil based preparation for parenteral nutrition. Allergic reactions to lipid infusions are only very seldom described, but it is important to be aware of the possibility of anaphylaxis, as this case-story demonstrates. Allergy to soy-proteins is well-known, whereas soybean oil is not allergenic in soybean-sensitive individuals. Soy-protein, in small quantities, can be detected in soy-oil. A possible connection between the patient's reaction and soy-allergy…
