Cerebral sparganosis diagnosed and treated with stereotactic techniques. Report of two cases.

Infestation of the central nervous system with sparganum, the larva of Spirometra mansoni, is rare. Only 27 cases have been reported in the literature; however, the true incidence might be underestimated. Two cases are reported that were definitively diagnosed by stereotactic biopsy techniques. Without a positive histological diagnosis, the first case would have been diagnosed as having a metastatic brain tumor and a course of radiotherapy would probably have been initiated. Differentiation between granuloma of cerebral sparganosis and brain tumors such as meningiomas, gliomas, and metastatic

Spargana in a weasel, Mustela sibirica manchurica, and a wild boar, Sus scrofa, from Gangwon-do, Korea.

To know the status of sparganum (plerocercoid of Spirometra erinacei) infection in the Korean wild life, several species of wild animals were captured in Gangwon-do and examined for their status of infection with spargana. From February to December 2011, a total of 62 wild boars, 5 badgers, 1 weasel, 1 Siberian chipmunk, and 53 wild rodents were captured, and their whole muscles were examined with naked eyes for the presence of spargana worms. From the weasel and 1 wild boar, a total of 5 spargana specimens were extracted. The weasel was for the first time recorded as an intermediate or parate

Eyelid sparganosis.

PURPOSE: To report a case of sparganosis in the muscle layer of the eyelid. DESIGN: Observational case report. METHODS: A 67-year-old man with migratory painful swelling on the eyelid that was unresponsive to medications was evaluated and treated surgically. RESULTS: Computed tomography showed a 1.5 x 1.5-cm sized, thick-walled lesion and ultrasound biomicroscopy showed hypoechoic tubular and cystic lesions. During surgery, a white, thread-like plerocercoid, 7 cm in length was detected in the orbicularis muscle of the lower eyelid. Histopathologic examination demonstrated the characteristic

Human sparganosis in Italy. Case report and review of the European cases.

Infections with Spargana, the larvae of Spirometra spp., are rarely found in humans in Europe. So far only six cases have been discussed in the literature, four from Italy and two from France. We here report a new case in a 50-year-old workman, a freshwater sports fisherman from Bologna in Northern Italy. The infection manifested as a subcutaneous nodule in the thigh, 2x3 cm in size, slightly painful when compressed, somewhat mobile under the skin, present for 9 months, with recurrent periods of local itchiness associated with redness and slight oedema. The lump was removed surgically. Histolo

Presumptive case of sparganosis manifesting as a hepatic mass: A case report and literature review.

A 60-year-old man was admitted due to rectosigmoid colon cancer, and a hepatic mass was incidentally found during the staging work-up. The mass appeared cystic with a thick wall and contained multiple bizarre cord-like structures on ultrasound, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. The differential diagnoses included organizing abscess/hematoma, foreign body granuloma and parasite infestation. Serologic study revealed anti-sparganum antibodies. Over 4-year follow-up, the patient did not complain of symptoms, and no changes in the characteristics of the liver mass were observed. H

Sparganosis presenting as a conus medullaris lesion: case report and literature review of the spinal sparganosis.

BACKGROUND: Sparganosis is a rare parasitic infection affecting various organs, including the central nervous system. In rare cases, sparganosis may involve the spinal cord, usually at the thoracic area. We herein report, to our knowledge, the first case of sparganosis presenting as a conus medullaris lesion and review the literature of sparganosis involving the spinal cord. OBSERVATION: A 42-year-old man presented with progressive perianal paresthesia and sphincter disturbances. Results of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay of the cerebrospinal fluid and surgical biopsy were consistent with s

Proliferating larval cestode in a man in Paraguay. A case report and review.

Large tumors removed from the lower abdomen and pleural cavity of a 24-year-old male Amerindian in Paraguay consisted mainly of multitudes of minute, proliferating, acephalic cestode larvae embedded in fibrous tissue. The parasite resembled Sparganum proliferum Stiles 1908 but was markedly less differentiated. From a review of the literature and examination of available reference material, it is concluded that in addition to the present one there are eight well documented cases of proliferating acephalic larval cestode infection in man: five in Japan and one in Florida (USA) that were S. proli

The first case of genetically confirmed sparganosis (Spirometra erinaceieuropaei) in European reptiles.

Sparganosis is a zoonosis caused by the spargana (larvae) of Spirometra sp. (Diphyllobothriidae). Reptiles are particularly important vectors for the transmission of this parasite in Asia; however, their role in sparganosis spread in European wildlife is unrecognized. We investigated the infection of reptiles with Spirometra sp. in NE Poland, where several mammalian hosts have been identified recently and in the past. Of the 59 dead reptiles, plerocercoids were found in two grass snakes (Natrix natrix) from the Białowieża Primeval Forest (BPF). The Spirometra erinaceieuropaei species was genet

A simplified method to estimate Diphyllobothrium spp. infection in salmonids.

Some fish parasites constitute severe management problems as they may cause mortality of their fish host or are important zoonoses of humans. Parasite assessments are therefore critical to keep track of infections. If conventional sampling techniques can be simplified, parasite assessments might be easier to obtain, less time-consuming and more extensive. In this study, we compare the assessed number of Diphyllobothrium spp. cysts (CYST) with the counted number of Diphyllobothrium spp. plerocercoid larvae recovered using a conventional digestive technique (LARV). The aim was to determine the p

Cerebral sparganosis.

A 22 years male patient presented with recurrent seizures, CT and MRI diagnosis of tuberculoma was made and the patient was treated. When seizures persisted, a craniotomy was done and the excised mass revealed an abscess with a segment of broad solid non-cavitory body, wall with no scolex and loose stroma and smooth muscle fibers. A diagnosis of sparganosis cerebral abscess was made. The case is reported in view of the rarity of cerebral sparganosis in India and the need for awareness of the entity in India.

[Human sparganosis. Report of a probable 7th case in South America and review of the subject].

A case of human Sparganosis was found in a resident of Northern Argentina, Pozo del Tigre, Province of Formosa, a zone bordering with the Republic of Paraguay, with a histopathologic diagnosis realized in the Pathologic Anatomy Institute of Asunción. In the Republic of Paraguay Dyphyllobrotium has been observed in cats, which reveals the existence of intermediaries (rats, water snakes, birds, etc.) as sources of human infection. Northern Argentina, where the patient always lived, is a geographic zone similar to the Republic of Paraguay. This case is the first described in the inland zone of th

Proliferative sparganosis in a cat.

Aberrant, proliferative sparganosis was diagnosed in a 6-yr-old male domestic long-haired cat from Gainesville, Florida. The cat spent all of its life in Florida. Postmortem examination revealed lesions and spargana in the stomach, spleen, and liver. By light and electron microscopy, unusual mononuclear cells, interpreted as host-derived monocytes, were evident in the stroma of the spargana. Retrovirus-like particles were present in the cytoplasm of some of these cells.

A case of inguinal sparganosis mimicking myeloid sarcoma.

We report here a case of inguinal sparganosis, initially regarded as myeloid sarcoma, diagnosed in a patient undergone allogeneic hematopoietic transplantation (HSCT). A 56-year-old male patient having myelodysplastic syndrome was treated with allogeneic HSCT after myeloablative conditioning regimen. At day 5 post-HSCT, the patient complained of a painless palpable mass on the left scrotum and inguinal area. Pelvic magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography revealed suspected myeloid sarcoma. Gun-biopsy was performed, and the result revealed eosinophilic infiltrations without malignanc

A case of breast sparganosis.

A 29-year-old Korean woman visited the Department of Surgery in MizMedi Hospital with a palpable itching mass on the right breast that had existed for the past 7 months. She had no history to eat either frogs or snakes, but had the history of drinking impure water. Sonography revealed a serpiginous hypoechoic tubular structure associated with partial fat necrosis in breast parenchymal layer and subcutaneous fat layer. It also revealed oval cystic lesions. At operation, an ivory white opaque ribbon-like worm that measured 16.5 cm in length and 0.5 cm in width was extracted. Anti-sparganum speci

Pulmonary sparganosis: a case report with five years follow-up.

Sparganosis has a world wide distribution, but only a few patients have pulmonary involvement. The term sparganosis is defined as an infection by the larva of parasitic tapeworms of Spirometra species. We present here-in a patient, who was infected by this parasite and had pulmonary symptoms. The chest roentgenography revealed diffuse multiple nodular infiltration with cavitations. Bronchoscopy with a transbronchial lung biopsy was nondiagnostic. Finally, open lung biopsy was performed, and the histologic examination revealed plerocercoid larva of sparganum. The patient was treated with mebend

Sparganosis of brain and spinal cord: unusual tapeworm infestation (report of two cases).

Among the diseases due to cerebral parasitism, those caused by sparganum mansoni, the larval form of Spirometra mansoni, are very rare. We report two cases, one involving the frontoparietal area in a 38-year-old male and presenting as a mass lesion and another in a 10-year-old girl, presenting with paraparesis due to mid-thoracic compressive mass lesion. Pathological examination of the resected lesion revealed the characteristic plerocercoid larva, spargana, enclosed in acute inflammatory exudate, resembling an abscess. Postoperative recovery was good, suggesting that the best treatment for ce

Cerebral sparganosis: case report and review.

Sparganosis is a rare infection caused by a tapeworm larva from the genus Spirometra. A 21-year-old Indian man presented with an 18-month history of episodic confusion followed by a grand mal seizure. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of the brain confirmed the presence of a lesion of the left occipital lobe. Subsequent stereotactic biopsy revealed a plerocercoid larva or sparganum. Surgical resection resulted in cure. This case prompted a review of the literature on central nervous system sparganosis. Altogether, 17 other cases of primary cerebral sparganosis have been report
